As the most basic element in English learning, vocabulary has always been the focus of teaching in college English classes, but the teaching effect is often unsatisfactory. In this paper, the genetic algorithm fitness function design part is integrated with the K-medoids algorithm to form K-GA-medoids, and secondly, it is combined with KNN to form an algorithmic framework for English vocabulary classification. In the classification process, clustering and classification steps are taken to realize the reduction of the training set samples and thus reduce the computational overhead. The experiments show that K-GA-medoids have significantly improved the clustering effect compared with traditional K-medoids, and the combination of K-GA-medoids and KNNs has effectively improved the efficiency of English vocabulary classification compared with the traditional KNN algorithm, while ensuring the classification accuracy. We found that students in college English course consider word memorization as a difficult learning task, and the traditional vocabulary teaching methods are not very effective, and the knowledge of etymology is often little known and rarely covered in classroom lectures. Therefore, the article explores new ideas and strategies for teaching vocabulary in college English from the perspective of etymology.

To solve the problem of Chinese EFL students’ passive and ineffective vocabulary learning, task-based language teaching (TBLT) methods were introduced to English classes at a university. With TBLT, students interacted with each other by using English, especially English words learnt, in order to fulfil the tasks designed by teachers. Based on second language acquisition theories, students were able to understand input and produce output during this process. This paper focuses on using TBLT in English vocabulary teaching in three non-English major classes of a Chinese university, involving the use of some word games. The word games’ features, organization, and a skill set built through those games, will be discussed. In terms of methodology, an online questionnaire survey was conducted among 93 university students from the three classes. Also, results of the students’ before-task and after-task word quizzes on Moodle platform and exam paper results were analysed. The research findings showed that students enjoyed playing word games in the English class and benefitted from it, in terms of language development and building skills. This paper recommends teachers to use TBLT in English vocabulary teaching and learning, as it is practical and can assist in EFL learners’ vocabulary acquisition.

Foreign language teaching in many Asian-Pacific countries in recent decades has shifted toward communicative-focused instruction. However, researchers have reported a gap between policy and practice. To incorporate teachers’ voices in adopting the communicative approach in the curriculum, this study explores factors that promote or hinder EFL teachers’ implementation of Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) in Taiwanese college English classes. The findings indicated that the factors that impacted implementation of CLT related to teachers, students, the educational system, and suitability of CLT in the local context. Also, certain situational constraints were found to hinder the implementation of CTL. The article provides practical recommendations for teachers, educators, and policy makers to further improve teacher training, curriculum design, and situational constraints to ensure success in implementing the CLT approach.

In this paper, we propose a multiple objective fitness function for cognitive engines by using the genetic algorithm (GA). Specifically, we propose four single objective fitness functions, and finally, we propose a multiple objective fitness function based on the single objective fitness functions for transmission parameter optimization. Numerical results demonstrate that we can obtain transmission parameter sets optimized for given transmission scenarios with the GA-based cognitive engine incorporating the proposed objective fitness function.

The mixer is the most widely used batch mixing equipment in the rubber industry. The rotor is a core component and has a great impact on the mixing effect of the equipment. The current rotor structure design is done empirically, being tightly dependent on practical experience. This paper proposes a method for optimizing the rotor structure by using optimization algorithms combined with numerical simulation technology. Using MATLAB software, a parametric design program for synchronous rotors and a set of optimization programs for the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm were written. The global distribution index was used as the fitness function to optimize the synchronous rotor configuration. A comparative analysis of the rotors before and after optimization shows that the optimization process is feasible, and the results are reliable. This provides new ideas for the design and development of mixer rotors.
