SummarySkin and shell diseases in aquatic turtles are often associated with several underlying causes. The presented case report describes aetiology including differential diagnoses, diagnostic procedures and therapy of a soft-shelled turtle (Pelodiscus sinensis) suffering from a septicaemic ulcerative dermatitis. Central aspect hereby is the positive curing effect of laser therapy on skin and shell lesions.

BACKGROUND: Low-level laser therapy (LLLT) and a gel containing an extract of Barbatimão, a native Brazilian tree, have shown promising results in both preclinical and clinical wound healing studies. PURPOSE: To describe the treatment of surgical wound dehiscence with LLLT and Barbatimão gel. CASE STUDY: A 54-year-old woman without comorbidities underwent abdominoplasty at another health facility. Three (3) weeks later she presented to the authors’ clinic after an episode of syncope, abrupt dyspnea, purulent exudate, and necrotic tissue in the surgical incision. She reported that wound redness, warmth, and swelling started 8 days postoperatively. The patient was admitted; on day 3 of that hospital stay, her condition improved and surgical debridement was performed. Follow-up care of wound dehiscence was provided in the outpatient clinic. The treatment involved daily application of Barbatimão gel and weekly application of LLLT. The wound healed after 84 days. CONCLUSION: This case report suggests that LLLT may be a beneficial adjunctive therapy, together with Barbatimão gel, for the treatment of surgical wound dehiscence.

Case Report: A 12-year-old castrated male dog with nonambulatory tetraplegia was diagnosed with spinal stenosis at C3–C4 through X-ray examination and with ventral extradural spinal compression at C3–C4 through myelography and computed tomography. The diagnosis of traditional Chinese veterinary medicine was local Qi and blood stagnation, spleen Qideficiency, blood deficiency, and kidney Yang deficiency. We initiated treatment using a combination of acupuncture and Chinese medicine iontophoresis with laser therapy. After 12 treatment days, there was a significant improvement in the dog’s ambulation function, which was indicated by proper walking and flexible head-turning. Conclusion: This indicates that combining acupuncture and Chinese medicine iontophoresis could be a potential treatment for chronic progressive cervical intervertebral disk disease in dogs.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: This case report describes the long-term effect of the high-intensity laser therapy (HILT) in a patient with chronic shoulder pain refractory in comparison to other treatments. CASE DESCRIPTION: Ten sessions of HILT were applied in a thirty-one-year-old woman diagnosed with subacromial syndrome. Assessment was carried out through different tests: Shoulder Pain and Disability Index (SPADI), Numeric Pain Rating Scale (NPRS) and pressure pain threshold (PPT). All measurements were taken at four different points: at the end of the 10 sessions, after one month, three months after the intervention and nine months after the initial intervention. RESULTS: There was a clinically significant improvement in NPRS (decrease of 5 points), PPT (increase of 1.5 kg/cm2) and SPADI (decrease of 24 points) one month after the intervention. After three months, the increase of NPRS and SPADI required a 5-session intervention to support the clinical improvement. Six months after these booster sessions an increase in PPT and a decrease in NPRS and SPADI were observed. CONCLUSION: Results indicate the suitability of developing new research lines which will optimize the use of HILT.
