An electrical power grid, is an interconnected network for delivering electricity from producers to consumers. Electrical grids vary in size from covering a single building through national grids (which cover whole countries) to transnational grids (which can cross continents). As the rollout of smart meters continues worldwide, there are use-cases where common solutions fail and the network availability of certain meters is very low due to poor communication conditions. This paper proposes a data slicing model for large data files which have to travel securely and reliably throughout the Smart Grid. The manuscript addresses improvements for PRIME PLC network availability by using correct data slicing at the application level along a tuned transmission rate in accordance with the noise levels of the power grid. Successful communications, even at low rates, mean that no manual interaction from energy supplier operators is needed reducing the maintenance costs for both the energy companies as well as for the end user. Experiments on a low power electrical grid setup have been performed in order to evaluate availability improvements through the proposed method as well as the feasibility of remote firmware upgrades. The results have shown that the current approach has similar upgrade time results with a manual firmware upgrade performed through an optical probe. Moreover, the results show that the presented remote firmware upgrade method is reliable and practical.

Integrated standardization theory has been applied to work on integrated standardization for the Smart Grid Scheduling and Controlling System (SG-SCS), aiming to improve the overall quality and coordination of technical standards for dispatching and controlling in power system which help to solve practical problems. This Paper presents the definition and history of integrated standardization, and introduces the method to develop integrated standardized work for the SG-SCS which contains 4 phases: preparation phase, planning phase, standard setting or revising phase and organizing and implementing phase. The objects for integrated standardization is analyzed and determined, while the objective is addressed as well. Analysis elements related to the SG-SCS systematically and ascertain the scope of those, for target decomposition of integrated standardization. Make the complex of standards plan based on former results and determine what standards we shall set or revising. Create a detailed work plan and execute it to form a coordinated complex of technical standards. Organize the implementation of standards, with a close-looped feedback work mechanics, the overall quality and reliability of standards for SG-SCS can be ensured. By carrying out the SG-SCS integrated standardization, problems such as partly duplication or Contradiction between old standards, the overall quality of standards is promoted, which helps to the operation and control of electrical power system.

Modern power grid is an important part of national energy strategy. Smart grid is one of the directions to modernize the electricity grid. Smart grid is the intelligent of power system, It is also known as the grid 2.0.It is based on integrated, high-speed bidirectional communication network ,It use the advanced sensor and measuring technology, use advanced equipment and control method to realize the application of the power grid reliability, safety, economic, efficient, environmental friendly and safety. High speed, bidirectional, real-time, and integrated communication system is the foundation and key point when monitoring and control smart grid. So How to improve the communication technology is very important.

The smart grid has been using more and more power electronic devices as an improvement to the current electrical power system along with plug-and-play integration of alternating sources of power. It has adopted the latest wired/wireless technologies incorporated into electric devices for timely information flow, control and on-demand interaction with customers. So, smart grid is reliable, efficient, and user as well as environment friendly. The grid keeps on getting smarter with better availability of new materials, storage systems, and alternative sources of energy. Though, this paper encompasses all sectors of smart grid, not limited to, smart transmission line, smart distribution generation, smart storage, smart communication, cyber security, and environment friendliness, it has demonstrated the wireless prototype of remote interaction between the consumers and the utility company. In countries like Nepal where power grid infrastructure is limited mostly to cities and energy supply is far below its demand, there is a great potential for energy market growth having minimal barriers to renewables.

The paper describes special aspects of using the wind power plants (wind turbines) in the power grid. The paper provides the classification and schematic presentation of AC wind turbines, analyzes the role, place and performance of wind power plants in Smart Grid systems with a large share of renewable energy sources. The authors also reviews a detailed analysis of existing AC wind turbines in this paper. Recommendations are given for how to enhance the wind power plants in smart grids in terms of reliability, and introduce the hardware used in the generation, conversion and interface systems into the existing power grid. After the wind power plants had been put online, the relevance of the Smart Grid concept for existing power grids was obvious. The execution of such projects is assumed to be financially costly, requires careful study, and development of flexible algorithms, but in some cases this may be the only approach. The analysis of using wind turbines shows that the structural configuration of wind power plants can be based on the principles known in the power engineering. The approaches may differ, not fundamentally, but in engineering considerations. it is necessary to point out that the method of controlling dual-power machines is quite comprehensive so that their wide use will face operational problems caused by the lack of highly professional specialists in electric drives. Therefore, it seems advisable to use square-cage asynchronous generators in wide applications. The paper shows that as the renewable energy sources are largely used in power grids, there is an issue of maintaining the power generation at a required level considering the variability of incoming wind energy. This results in the malfunctions in the operation of relay protection devices and emergency control automatics (RP and ECA), and the complicated control. Also, the standards of the CIS countries and regulatory documents miss the requirements for the wind turbine protections, taking into account their specialty causing the inefficient standard protective logic, which does not work correctly in a number of abnormal and emergency operating modes, and especially Smart Grid in power grids.

India’s electrical power system grid also known as the power grid is serving us from a very long time. In this duration, there were no major developments or changes reported in the power grid system. Electrical power consumer demand is increasing drastically and the present grid system is not able to fulfil these emerging requirements. To fulfil the requirements of future power load, we need a modified system which has to be reliable, secure, intelligent and efficient. By converting the power grid into the smart grid will be a promising solution for adopting the above properties. Communication Infrastructure is a major part of the smart grid. The end-user can reduce their expenditure on electricity demand by using smart home appliance, to keep away from the rush hours and also make use of the renewable energy instead from utility, is a great example of deployment of internet of things (IoT) in grid communication. In this paper, we have provided a survey of different communication technology, applications, benefits and challenges in communication infrastructure, spatially IoT.

The ongoing upgrade of the electrical power system into a more powerful system known as Smart Grid has both benefits and costs. Smart Grid relies on advanced communication and hence offers better services through improved monitoring, planning, and control. However, enhanced communications make Smart Grid more susceptible to privacy leaks and cyber attacks. Small meters collect detailed consumer data, such as power consumption, which can then become a major source of privacy leakage. Encryption can help protect consumer data, but great care is needed. The popular RC4 (Rivest Cipher 4) encryption has been implemented in the widely deployed smart meter standard—Open Smart Grid Protocol (OSGP)—but has been shown to have major weaknesses. This paper proposes the use of Spritz encryption. Spritz is an RC4-like algorithm designed to repair weak design decisions in RC4 to improve security. A test on performing one encryption took only 0.85 milliseconds, showing that it is fast enough not to affect the operations of a smart meter. Its ability to withstand brute force attacks on small keys is also significantly greater than RC4’s ability.
