Sphaerotheca pashchima, a new species of burrowing frog, is described from western India. It can be diagnosed from all its congeners based on a combination of characters including interorbital width less than upper eyelid width, snout to nostril distance less than half of eye diameter, nostril nearer to snout than to eye, internarial distance greater than inter orbital distance, snout rounded, dorsum rough and warty, finger 2 length equal to or less than finger 4 length, finger 1 less finger 3 length, outer metatarsal tubercle absent, tibio tarsal tubercle absent, length of inner metatarsal tubercle more than three times the inner toe length and reduced webbing.  We also provide 16S rRNA gene sequence for S. pashchima sp. nov. and show that it is genetically distinct from species of Sphaerotheca for which genetic data is available.

A previously undescribed Helicobacter sp. was recovered from a cat with severe diarrhea. Based upon the absence of any other identifiable cause of diarrhea, this helicobacter may be involved in the development of the disease signs. The organism could not be cultured but was described on the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis and morphology and appeared to be a new species, with Helicobacter canis being the most genetically similar species. The presence of a diarrhea-inducing helicobacter in a companion animal may pose a risk of zoonosis.

A new species of genus Megophrys from Gaoligong Mountains, Yunnan Province, China is described. Phylogenetic analyses based on mitochondrial DNA and nuclear DNA all clustered the new species as an independent clade nested into the subgenus Panophrys. The smallest genetic distance based on 16S rRNA gene between the new species and its congeners was 3.0%. The new species could be identified from its congeners by a combination of following characters: moderate body size (SVL 31.0–34.8 mm in males); vomerine ridge weak, vomerine teeth absent; dorsal skin relatively smooth; tongue slightly notched behind; tympanum rounded and relatively large, 0.54 times of eye length; a horn-like tubercle on edge of each upper eyelid small; tibio-tarsal articulation reaches middle eye when leg stretched forward; finger tips rounded, not expanded to small pad; toes with narrow fringes and rudimentary webbing; ventral hindlimbs semitransparent purplish with greyish white pigments; ventral body scattered with distinct dark patches in the middle.

A new species of tree frog, G. guangdongensis sp nov., is described based on a series of specimens collected from Dawuling Forest Station, Mount Nankun and Nanling Nature Reserve of Guangdong Province, southeastern China. The new species is distinguished from all known congeners by a significant genetic divergence at the mitochondrial 16S rRNA gene fragment examined (p-distance ≥ 4.6%) and the following combination of morphological characters: relatively small body size (SVL 26.1–34.7 mm in adult males, 34.9–35.4 mm in adult females); upper eyelid and dorsum lacking spines; supratympanic fold and tympanum distinct; dorsal and lateral surface rough, sparsely scattered with tubercles; ventral skin granular; tibiotarsal projection absent; toe-webbing moderately developed, finger webbing rudimentary; heels slightly overlapping when flexed hindlimbs are held at right angles to the body axis; brown to beige above, with an inverse Y-shaped dark brown marking extendeing from the interorbital region to the centre of the dorsum; males with a single subgular vocal sac and protruding nuptial pads with minute granules on the dorsal surface of the base of first finger. The discovery and description of Gracixalus guangdongensis sp. nov. represents the 14th species known in this genus.

A Gram-negative, motile, rod-shaped bacteria, designated D7T, was isolated by using the dilution-to-extinction method, from a soil sample taken from Rambla Salada (Murcia, Spain). Growth of strain D7T was observed at 15–40 °C (optimum, 37 °C), pH 5–9 (optimum, 7) and 0–7.5% (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 3%). It is facultatively anaerobic. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence showed it belongs to the genus Marinobacterium. The in silico DDH and ANI against closest Marinobacterium relatives support its placement as a new species within this genus. The major fatty acids of strain D7T were C16:0, summed feature 3 (C16:1 ω7c/C16:1 ω6c) and summed feature 8 (C18:1 ω7c/C18:1 ω6c). The polar lipid profile consists of phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol and two uncharacterized lipids. Ubiquinone 8 was the unique isoprenoid quinone detected. The DNA G + C content was 59.2 mol%. On the basis of the phylogenetic, phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and genomic characterization, strain D7T (= CECT 9818T = LMG 31312T) represents a novel species of the genus Marinobacterium for which the name Marinobacterium ramblicola sp. nov. is proposed. Genome-based metabolic reconstructions of strain D7T suggested a heterotrophic and chemolitotrophic lifestyle, as well as the capacity to biosynthetize and catabolize compatible solutes, and to degrade hydrocarbon aromatic compounds.

Bdellovibrio and like organisms (BALOs) are a group of Gram-negative bacterial predators that are defined as having a periplasmic life cycle, whereby the predator enters into the periplasm of a prey cell. Recently, a predator of Caulobacter crescentus with a novel epibiotic life cycle was identified as a new species — Bdellovibrio exovorus. Therefore, this raises the question as to what determines the type of life cycle of a predator. Six bacterial strains susceptible to predation by B. exovorus JSS were isolated from soil, sewage, and activated sludge. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed these prey cells to be Acinetobacter johnsonii, Acinetobacter junii, Aeromonas hydrophila, and Delftia acidovorans. The life cycle of B. exovorus was epibiotic on all these prey cells. Environmental samples were enriched with these prey cells; new BALOs were isolated and their life cycle assessed. All new isolates had a periplasmic life cycle. BALOs generally have diverse prey ranges, and thus, not all new prey cells could be used by each new predator. Overall, each prey cell was able to support the growth of predators with either life cycle. Therefore it was confirmed that it is the predator and not the prey that determines the type of life cycle.

A new species, Gracixalus jinggangensis sp. nov., is described based on a series of specimens collected from Mount Jinggang, Jiangxi Province, southeastern China. The new species is distinguished from all other known congeners by the following combination of morphological characters: relatively small body size, SVL 27.9–33.8 mm in nine males and 31.6 mm in a single female; upper eyelid and dorsum lacking spines; skin of dorsal and lateral surface of head, body and limbs rough with sparsely scattered with tubercles; ventral skin granular; tibiotarsal projection absent; finger webbing rudimentary; toes with moderately developed webbing; brown to beige above in life, with an inverse Y-shaped dark brown marking extending from the interorbital region to the middle of dorsum; males with a single, subgular vocal sac, barely visible nuptial pads with minute granules on the dorsal surface of the bases of first and second fingers. The new species is also genetically divergent from all other Gracixalus for which comparable 16S rRNA gene sequences are available. The discovery of Gracixalus jinggangensis sp. nov. represents the twelfth known species in the genus.

A new species of frog, Eleutherodactylus geitonos sp. nov., is described from the southeastern slope of the Cordillera Central, Dominican Republic. The new frog is closely related to E. haitianus and both species share a small size. They differ in some morphological proportions and other external features, coloration, advertisement calls and DNA sequences of the 16S rRNA gene. Morphological and bioacoustic comparisons with other species in the  E. abbotti species group are also provided. Our preliminary genetic data suggest that the taxonomic status of E. neodreptus (a synonym of E. audanti) and E. melatrigonum need to be re-evaluated.

AbstractWe isolated a gammaproteobacterial methanotrophic strain FWC3, from canal sediment from Western India. The strain oxidizes methane and can also grow on methanol. The draft genome of the same was sequenced which showed a size of ∼3.4 Mbp and 63% GC content. FWC3 is a coccoid, pale pink pigmented methanotroph and is seen in the form of diplococci, triplets, tetrads or small aggregates. After comparison of the complete 16S rRNA gene sequence, average amino-acid similarities and digital DNA-DNA hybridization values with that of the neighboring type species, we propose that the strain belongs to a novel genus and species, Ca. Methylolobus aquaticus FWC3Ts.

Plant biomass offers great potential as a sustainable resource, and microbial consortia are primordial in its bioconversion. The wheat-straw-biodegradative bacterial strain w15 has drawn much attention as a result of its biodegradative potential and superior degradation performance in bacterial-fungal consortia. Strain w15 was originally assigned to the species Sphingobacterium multivorum based on its 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene sequence. A closer examination of this taxonomic placement revealed that the sequence used has 98.9% identity with the ‘divergent’ 16S rRNA gene sequence of S. multivorum NCTC 11343T, yet lower relatedness with the canonical 16S rRNA sequence. A specific region of the gene, located between positions 186 and 210, was found to be highly variable and determinative for the divergence. To solve the identity of strain w15, genome metrics and analyses of ecophysiological niches were undertaken on a selection of strains assigned to S. multivorum and related species. These analyses separated all strains into three clusters, with strain w15, together with strain BIGb0170, constituting a separate radiation, next to S. multivorum and S. siyangense. Moreover, the strains denoted FDAARGOS 1141 and 1142 were placed inside S. siyangense. We propose the renaming of strains w15 and BIGb0170 as members of the novel species, coined Sphingobacterium paramultivorum.
