Abstract 10041: Increased Triglyceride Levels are Associated With Endothelial Dysfunction: FMD-Japan Registry

Objective: In contrast to low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and high density lipoprotein cholesterol, which are well-established independent risk factors for cardiovascular disease, the importance of triglycerides remains controversial. In this study, we evaluated the associations between triglycerides and endothelial function in the general population. Methods and Results: We enrolled 4,908 subjects (3842 men and 1066 women; mean age, 48±12 years) who were enrolled in FMD-Japan registry. And, we investigated cross-sectional associations between triglycerides and endothelial function by measurement of flow-mediated vasodilation (FMD). The triglycerides levels were negatively associated with FMD (r=-0.10, P<0.001). Subjects were divided into six groups on the basis of the triglycerides level. FMD was significantly decreased with an increase in the triglycerides level (≤63 mg/dL, 7.0±3.5%; 64 to 83 mg/dL, 6.3±3.5%; 84 to 105 mg/dL, 6.0±3.1%; 106 to 131 mg/dL, 5.8±3.2%; 132 to 179 mg/dL, 5.7±3.1%; ≥180 mg/dL, 5.5±3.0%; P for trend<0.001). After adjustment for age, sex, cardiovascular risk factors including high density lipoprotein cholesterol, high triglycerides level groups independently remained associated with low quartile of FMD using the triglycerides ≤63 mg/dL group as the reference (Table). Conclusions: These findings supported an independent association between triglycerides and cardiovascular disease.

Abstract Background The triglyceride and glucose index (TyG) and triglyceride-to-high density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (TG/HDL-C) were found to be substitute markers of insulin resistance (IR). We aimed to compare the efficacy of the two indicators in the diagnosis of Metabolic-Associated Fatty Liver Disease (MAFLD), which was rarely covered in the literature, and to construct a novel disease diagnosis model.Methods A retrospective cross-sectional study was carried out in West China Hospital of Sichuan University and 229 people (97 MAFLD and 132 Non-MAFLD) were included. Biochemical indexes were collected and analyzed by logistic regression to screen out indicators that expressed differently in MAFLD patients and healthy controls and incorporate them into a diagnostic model. MAFLD was diagnosed by Ultrasound.Results After adjusting for age, gender and BMI, Serum ALT, AST, AST/ALT (A/A), FPG, Cys-C, URIC, TG, HDL-C, ALP, GGT, nonHDL-C, LDL-C/HDL-C, nonHDL-C/HDL-C, TG/HDL-C, TC/HDL-C, TyG and TyG-BMI were risk factors of MAFLD through binary logistics regression analysis. The odds ratio of TG/HDL-C and TyG were 5.387 (95%CI: 2.986-9,718) and 107.945 (95% CI: 25.824-451.222). In identifying MAFLD, TyG, TG/HDL-C and TG were found to be the most vital indexes by the random forest method and the area under the curve (AUC) of them are all greater than 0.9 respectively. In addition, the combination of gender, BMI, ALT, TG, HDL-C, TyG and TyG-BMI had a great diagnostic efficiency for MAFLD.Conclusions TyG and TG/HDL-C were potential risk factors for MAFLD and the former made a better performance in diagnosing MAFLD. The combination of gender, BMI, ALT, TG, HDL-C, TyG and TyG-BMI improved the diagnostic capability of MAFLD.

There is a lack of research on the use of electronic tools that guide patients toward reducing their cardiovascular disease risk. We conducted a 9-month clinical trial in which participants who were at low (n = 100) and moderate (n = 23) cardiovascular disease risk—based on the National Cholesterol Education Program III’s 10-year risk estimator—were randomized to usual care or to usual care plus use of an Interactive Cholesterol Advisory Tool during the first 8 weeks of the study. In the moderate-risk category, an interaction between treatment condition and Framingham risk estimate on low-density lipoprotein and non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol was observed, such that participants in the virtual clinician treatment condition had a larger reduction in low-density lipoprotein and non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol as their Framingham risk estimate increased. Perceptions of the Interactive Cholesterol Advisory Tool were positive. Evidence-based information about cardiovascular disease risk and its management was accessible to participants without major technical challenges.

ABSTRACT Objective To investigate the influence of ultra-processed food consumption on anthropometric and atherogenic indices. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted with 327 adolescents aged 14 to 19 years. Sociodemographic, anthropometric, biochemical, and food consumption data were evaluated. The ratios of atherogenic indices were calculated using the Castelli I (Total Cholesterol/High Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol), Castelli II (Low Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol/High Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol), and estimated Low Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol particle size (Atherogenic Index of Plasma=Triglycerides/High-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol) indices. Logistic regression was used for the unadjusted and adjusted analysis between ultra-processed foods consumption, anthropometric, and atherogenic indices. The level of significance was 5%. Results Most participants were female (59.3%). Girls had a higher consumption of ultra-processed foods (26.6% vs. 20.5%). Of the total number of adolescents, 16.5% were overweight and 65.7% were from public schools. Adolescents with altered values for the Castelli I and II Index, and for the Atherogenic Index of Plasma had significantly higher weights, Waist Circumference, Waist Circumference/ Height and Body Mass Index/ Age values. The adjusted analysis identified a significant association (Odds ratio=2.29; 95% Confidence interval: 1.23-4.28) between the high consumption of ultra-processed foods and the Castelli II index. Conclusion The associations between atherogenic indices and anthropometric indices and the consumption of ultra-processed foods highlight the negative influence of these foods on adolescents’ cardiovascular health.

1. Increased blood or plasma viscosity has been observed in almost all conditions associated with accelerated atherosclerosis. Cognizant of the enlarging body of evidence implicating increased viscosity in atherogenesis, we hypothesize that the effects of low-density lipoprotein and high-density lipoprotein on blood viscosity correlate with their association with risk of atherosclerosis. 2. Blood viscometry was performed on samples from 28 healthy, non-fasting adult volunteers using a capillary viscometer. Data were correlated with haematocrit, fibrinogen, serum viscosity, total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol, triglycerides and calculated low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol. 3. Low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol was more strongly correlated with blood viscosity than was total cholesterol (r = 0.4149, P = 0.0281, compared with r = 0.2790, P = 0.1505). High-density lipoprotein-cholesterol levels were inversely associated with blood viscosity (r = −0.4018, P = 0.0341). 4. To confirm these effects, viscometry was performed on erythrocytes, suspended in saline, which had been incubated in plasma of various low-density lipoprotein/high-density lipoprotein ratios. Viscosity correlated directly with low-density lipoprotein/high-density lipoprotein ratio (n = 23, r = 0.8561, P < 0.01). 5. Low-density lipoprotein receptor occupancy data suggests that these effects on viscosity are mediated by erythrocyte aggregation. 6. These results demonstrate that the effects of low-density lipoprotein and high-density lipoprotein on blood viscosity in healthy subjects correlate with their association with risk of atherosclerosis. These effects on viscosity may play a role in atherogenesis by modulating the dwell or residence time of atherogenic particles in the vicinity of the endothelium.
