The milliped order Callipodida in western North America (Schizopetalidae: Tynommatinae), and a summary of the New World fauna

AbstractIn western North America, the milliped order Callipodida is represented by the Colactidini, Tynommatini stat. n., and Diactidini tribus n., in the subfamily Tynommatinae, family Schizopetalidae; a coordinate tribe, the Texophonini, occurs on the Gulf Coast of south Texas. The Tynommatini consists of two genera and four species: Tynomma mutans (Chamberlin), T. magnum Buckett & Gardner, and T. gardneri sp. n., occurring around Monterey and San Pablo/San Francisco Bays, California, and Idrionaria dineh gen. n. & sp. n., in Washington County, Utah. The Colactidini ranges from Durango, Mexico, to central Utah and California east of the Sierra Nevada, with disjunct areas in southern California and Baja California, the latter extending northward to metropolitan San Diego. It is represented by two genera and 6 species: Colactis Loomis: C. tiburona (Chamberlin), utorum (Chamberlin), and protenta and quadrata, both by Loomis; and Heptium Loomis: H. carinellum and scamillatum, both by Loomis. The Diactidini, occupying coastal southern California and the adjacent fringe of Baja California, is comprised of three genera and 10 species: Diactis Loomis: D. soleata, triangula, and frondifera, all by Loomis, and amniscela, cupola, jacinto, procera, and strumella, all spp. n.; Florea sinuata gen. n. & sp. n.; and Caliactis bistolata gen. n. & sp. n. The following new synonymies are proposed: C. yuma Chamberlin, sideralis Loomis, and loomisi Hoffman under C. tiburona; C. briggsi Shear and saxetana and baboquivari, both by Loomis, under C. utorum; H. canum Chamberlin under H. carinellum; and Etiron paroicum and pearcei, both by Chamberlin, under D. triangula and T. mutans, respectively. The eastern Nearctic callipodid fauna is summarized and significant new localities are reported; Tetracion antraeum Hoffman, stat. n., is elevated from a subspecies of T. jonesi Hoffman.

Two new Pertusaria species with brown ascospores are described from southern California and Baja California, Mexico. Pertusaria islandica sp. nov. is characterized by pertusariate to pseudolecanorate ascomata, ellipsoid ascospores, 8-spored asci, a strongly K+ violet reacting epithecium, and the presence of the 2′-O-methylperlatolic acid chemosyndrome, while P. occidentalis sp. nov. has pertusariate ascomata, globose to subglobose ascospores, 8-spored asci, and contains the arthothelin chemosyndrome. Pertusaria ochracea Kremp. is reduced to synonymy with P. melanospora Nyl.

abstract An approximate reversed refraction profile has been obtained for the center of the Peninsular Ranges of southern California and Baja California Norte using arrival times from Corona blasts to obtain the NW-SE profile, and arrival times from the well-located Pino Solo earthquake of 17 July 1975 to obtain the reversing SE-NW profile. The results indicate a relatively high-velocity crust, with P velocities of 6.57 to 6.95 km/sec, similar to the high velocities found by Hadley and Kanamori (1979). A crustal thickness of about 40 km was found for the axis of the Peninsular Ranges, significantly greater than was found by Hadley and Kanamori (1979) for the average crustal thickness of the northern part of the province. This suggests that the thick crust may be confined to a relatively narrow zone along the axis of the province. The crustal thickness found here is approximately 10 km less than found for the deeper crust of the Sierra Nevada (Bateman and Eaton, 1967; Pakiser and Brune, 1980).

The cassiduloid echinoid Calilampas californiensis n. gen. and sp. is described from middle lower Eocene (“Capay Stage”) shallow-marine sandstones in both the middle part of the Bateque Formation, Baja California Sur, Mexico, and the lower part of the Llajas Formation, southern California. The new genus is tentatively placed in family Pliolampadidae. The cassiduloid Cassidulus ellipticus Kew, 1920, previously known only from the “Capay Stage” in California, is also present in “Capay Stage” shallow-marine sandstones of the Bateque Formation.

Lampetra ayresii (Günther), a species of parasitic river lamprey endemic to western North America, is redescribed on the basis of material from off the Skeena River, British Columbia, to San Francisco Bay, California. A neotype is designated. Transformed specimens differ from those of the European Lampetra fluviatilis (Linnaeus) in having a larger eye, a longer prebranchial and a shorter branchial region, and possibly a lower second dorsal fin, an acute rather than an obtuse caudal fin, a higher average number of trunk myomeres, and an area of dark pigment on the caudal fin. Ammocoetes differ from those of Lampetra fluviatilis principally in having a higher number of myomeres, a dark caudal spot (which distinguishes them also from ammocoetes of Lampetra planeri (Bloch), the nonparasitic brook lamprey), and an absence of dark pigment on most parts of the head and on the precursor of the tongue. Specimens from Oregon are recorded for the first time. Specimens from Mill Creek, Tehama County, California, show that this species ascends the Sacramento River farther than previous records indicated. An annotated synonymy is included. Lampetra ayresii is indicated as distinct from Ammocoetes cibarius Girard, which is regarded as identical with Entosphenus tridentatus (Richardson). Lampetra ayresii and Lampetra fluviatilis are illustrated by a number of original drawings and photographs.

The Penutian language family, Penutian phylum, or better still, Penutian hypothesis is one of the largest genealogical linguistic groupings to have been proposed for western North America. It involves 16 families or isolates. Only a few of these families are demonstrably relatable to one another according to current knowledge and diachronic techniques. Sometimes Penutian is split by observers into groups of languages assumed to be interrelated, and this is done without assumptions that the groups themselves are interrelated. This article focuses on the Canadian and US languages in “Sapir’s Penutian,” the most commonly accepted version; the most southerly family within Penutian is thus held as Yokutsan of California’s Sierra Nevada. It discusses the subclassification of the so-called Penutian languages into families and smaller units; aspects of their phonology, morphosyntax, and contact histories; and issues in their revitalization and the potential reconstruction of Proto-Penutian.

The family Macrosternodesmidae is redefined and recorded from western North America. Four small-bodied species in Arizona and California, USA, and Baja California Norté, Mexico, are assigned to Tidesmus Chamberlin 1943; Phreatodesmus and Oodedesmus, both authored by Loomis, 1960, are placed in synonymy. Phreatodesmus torreyanus Loomis, 1960 and O. variabilis Loomis, 1960, are transferred into Tidesmus as valid species; P. cooki Loomis, 1960, is a synonym of T. episcopus Chamberlin, 1943, the type species, and P. dentatus Loomis, 1960, is a synonym of P. torreyanus. Brachydesmus hastingsus Chamberlin, 1941, also is referable to Tidesmus; a topotypical male is needed to establish its identity in the absence of authentic type specimens. Tidesmus hubbsi Chamberlin, 1943, based on unidentifiable females, is geographically segregated and incompatible with the otherwise coherent generic distribution. A topotypical male is also necessary to determine its identity; for now, we remove hubbsi from Tidesmus and leave it unassigned.

Four new venerid species from the Cretaceous of the North American Pacific Slope are described and four previously described species are reassigned. Of the new species, two are allotted to new genera: Rhaiphiale based upon Rhaiphiale pharota n. sp. and Egrona based upon Egrona fallax n. sp., both Turonian in age and from southern California. The other new species are Loxo quintense n. sp., of late Maastrichtian age from California, and Paraesa cedrina n. sp., late Albian in age from Baja California, Mexico. The previously described species “Meretrix” arata Gabb, 1864, Turonian, and “?Meretrix” fragilis Gabb, 1869, late Maastrichtian, are placed in the new genus Callistalox; “Meretrix” lens (Gabb, 1864), Campanian age, and Flaventia zeta Popenoe, 1937, Turonian, are provisionally assigned to Paraesa Casey, 1952. This is the first identification of Paraesa from the Pacific Slope of North America. No species of Flaventia Jukes-Brown, 1908, is now known in Pacific Slope faunas.
