Synopsis of the Ethmiinae (Lepidoptera, Gelechioidea: Depressariidae) of the Afrotropical Region and descriptions of new species

In Africa south of the Sahara 55 valid species of the subfamily Ethmiinae have been recognised to date. These species are listed alphabetically including important synonyms. The country of origin and the depository of the type material are indicated. In this article seven new species are communicated from Kenya, Namibia and South Africa. They are described as Ethmia aberdaresi sp. n., Ethmia anikini sp. n., Ethmia kagamegensis sp. n., Ethmia karasbergensis sp. n., Ethmia kunenica sp. n., Ethmia kuisibi sp. n., and Ethmia fluviatilis sp. n. The adult moths of the new species are illustrated in colour. The male and female genitalia are depicted as black/white photos including line drawings of lateral and dorsal views of male genitalia. The systematic position of the new species is briefly discussed.

Type material of the described species of Ascopus Marshall, 1951, Oreosecus Marshall, 1950, Perarogula Hoffmann, 1963 and Rhadinocopes Hustache, 1931 was examined and their taxonomic status is discussed. Oreosecus Marshall, 1950 and Rhadinocopes Hustache, 1931 are proposed as junior synonyms of Tapinomorphus Hartmann, 1904, Perarogula Hoffmann, 1963 is proposed as a junior synonym of Ascopus Marshall, 1951. Rhadinocopes curvipes Hustache, 1931, R. echinatus Marshall, 1951 and Perarogula lamottei Hoffmann, 1963 are transferred as valid species to the genus Ascopus, Rhadinocopes alticola Hustache, 1939, R. orientalis Hustache, 1931 and Oreosecus porculus Marshall, 1950 are transferred as valid species to the genus Tapinomorphus. Lectotypes of Rhadinocopes orientalis Hustache, 1931 and Rhadinocopes alticola Hustache, 1939 are designated. Ascopus girardi sp. nov. from Guinea, Mt. Nimba, is described and compared with all other species of the genus. Male and female genitalia of Ascopus are described and illustrated for the first time. A key to Ascopus species is presented.

The species of the genus Betasyrphus Matsumura, 1917 from Madagascar are reviewed. Betasyrphus keiseri sp. nov. is described from Vohipara (Ramonafana National Park) and compared to the type material of Betasyrphus serarius (Wiedemann,1830). The latter species could not be confirmed from the Afrotropical region and has to be deleted from the Afrotropical catalogue. The male genitalia of the new species are figured and a key to the species from Madagascar is given. The genus contains 12 described Aftrotropical species, excluding two taxa of uncertain status. Only two valid species exist in Madagascar.

The species belonging to the subgenus Molopsis Schatzmayr, 1943 of genus Tapinopterus Schaum, 1858 are revised. Thestudy is based on 372 specimens and includes, for each taxon, diagnosis, description (only for the new species), references,new distributional records and illustrations. Morphological characters of the male and female genitalia are widely used todelimit the separate species, the significance of some non-gonapophyseal genital structures of the females for the system-atics of Molopsis is explicitly emphasized. For the first time, the male genitalia of T. molopiformis, T. molopinus, T. wie-demanni, and T. rebellis, including also newly described species, as well as female genitalia of Molopsis are described andillustrated. All available type material is listed and represented by habitus photographs.As a result, 9 monotypic species of Molopsis are recognized. Tapinopterus rebellis (Chaudoir, 1868) and T. rebelliskumanensis (Reitter, 1884), formerly assigned to Molopsis are recognized as outgroup-taxa. The following new speciesare described: T. (Molopsis) aenigmaticus sp.nov. (Asian Turkey, „Armenia“ imprecise locality), T. (Molopsis) chaudoirisp.nov. (Asian Turkey, Bursa Villayet, Uludağ Mt., Sakarya (Adapazari) Villayet, Gökdağ Mt.), T. (Molopsis) oyukluensissp.nov. (Asian Turkey, Konya Villayet, Fasihan Pass), and T. (Molopsis) relegatus sp.nov. (Asian Turkey, Bolu Villayet,Mengen env., Dorukhan Pass). The following nomenclatural acts are also proposed: Tapinopterus (Molopsis) molopinus (Chaudoir, 1868) = Tapinopterus (Molopsis) dipojranus brussanus Straneo, 1984, syn.nov.; Tapinopterus (Molopsis)

The spider genus Austrochilus comprises only six species known from Chile and Argentina. Here, we describe a new species, Austrochilus parwis sp. n., based on a single male and several females. The new species was found in Chile (Region IX) and, based on characters in the male and female genitalia, seems to be closely related to A. forsteri Grismado, Lopardo & Platnick, 2003. The female genitalia were investigated using X-ray microscopy, revealing for the first time the internal organization of austrochiline female genitalia. Furthermore, we provide a comparative documentation of the male genitalia of austrochilines based mainly on type material, and comment on the recently proposed nomenclatorial changes to the family name Austrochilidae.

Eight genera belonging to a generic group with the modified male genitalia (similar to those of the Indo-Malayan genus Truljalia) are characterized. They are distributed only in Africa south of Sahara. Four new genera, 13 new species, and unknown male of one species are described; some other African genera and species are considered (i.e., type material is revised, a lectotype for Dolichogryllus camerunensis Bol. is designated, and information on the systematic position of some forms is given). The distribution of the Podoscirtini genera is considered; 7-8 regions with almost endemic generic composition are outlined. Preliminary hypotheses for the origin of the Podoscirtini faunas of these regions are proposed. New replacement names (Valiatrella, nom. n. and Stenotrella, nom. n.) are proposed for the genera Valia Gorochov, 1985 (non Alexeev, 1979) and Stenogryllodes Chopard, 1952 (non Chopard, 1936), respectively.

AbstractThe known species of the longicornis species-group in the genus Chaetocnema Stephens, 1831, are revised. A diagnosis of the C. longicornis species-group is given and five new species are described from Republic of South Africa and Democratic Republic of Congo: C. kapirensis sp. n. (Lualaba Province), C. mariobiondii sp. n. (Kwa-Zulu Natal, Weza), C. zulu (Kwa-Zulu Natal, Central Drakensberg), C. mapumalangaensis (Mapuma langa), and C. phuthaditjhabensis (Free State). Redescription and line drawings of male and female genitalia of C. longicornis Jacoby, 1895 and C. reprehensa Bechyné, 1960, and SEM photographs of particular morphological aspects of all species are also included. Finally ecological data on some species are supplied.

AbstractThe known species of the flea beetle genus Collartaltica Bechyné, endemic to the Afrotropical Region, are revised. A brief diagnosis of the genus is given and two new species, C. meridionalis sp.n. and C. alluaudi sp.n., respectively from the Southern Africa and Kenya, are described. Line drawings of male and female genitalia and scanning electron micrographs of particular morphological aspects of the species considered are also included. Finally, a cladistic analysis of this genus using maximum parsimony is presented.

In this paper we describe two new sympatric species of phalangopsid crickets Adelosgryllus from the Araripe-Apodi National Forest, State of Ceará, Brazil, highlighting morphological characters, mainly from male genitalia, tegmina and copulatory papilla. We also present a geographical map for the valid species of the genus, as well as photographs of holotypes and paratypes. The type-material is deposited in the Museu de Zoologia da Universidade de São Paulo (MZUSP).
