A re-appraisal of Gegenes Hübner, 1819 (Lepidoptera, Hesperiidae) based on male and female genitalia, with the description of a new genus, Afrogegenes

Examination of male and female genitalia as well as external characters of all species of the current genus Gegenes Hübner, 1819 (Hesperiidae, Lepidoptera) led to the observation that two well-marked groups can be distinguished, differing in external characters as well as in male and female genitalia. For one of the two groups a new genus is erected, Afrogegenes. Conventionally, the group for which the new genus is erected contains two species, Gegenes letterstedti (Wallengren, 1857) and G. hottentota (Latreille, 1823), but G. hottentota ocra Evans, 1937, has been given full species rank here, raising the number of species in Afrogegenes to three. G. letterstedti has long been known in the literature as G. niso (Linnaeus, 1764), but this is based on an incorrect lectotype designation. Male and female genitalia are described and figured for all taxa, in some cases for the first time.

Titanochrysa Sosa & Freitas is a new genus of Neotropical Chrysopini (Chrysopidae: Chrysopinae) recorded from Costa Rica,Venezuela and Brazil. Titanochrysa gen. nov. shares several external and genitalic characters with Ceraeochrysa Adams, 1982;Chrysopodes Navás, 1913; Cryptochrysa Freitas & Penny, 2000; Parachrysopiella Brooks & Barnard, 1990 and Ungla Navás1914. It may be distinguished from those genera by its very long sternite 8+9, sternites 2–8 usually with microtholi, male geni-talia with the dorsal surface of the arcessus striated, gonosaccus well-developed, bearing elongate gonosetae and microsetae,and a spoon-like gonapsis. Herein, Titanochrysa circumfusa (Burmeister, 1939) [= Chrysopodes circumfusa (Burmeister)]comb. nov. and Titanochrysa pseudovaricosa (Penny) [= Ceraeochrysa pseudovaricosa Penny, 1998] comb. nov. were identi-fied; Titanochrysa ferreirai Sosa & Freitas sp. nov. and Titanochrysa trespuntensis Sosa & Freitas sp. nov. were described.The external morphology, and male and female genitalia of all these species are described. Titanochrysa circumfusa (Burmeister, 1939) comb. nov. is recorded for the first time from Venezuela.

The new iassine leafhopper genus Cavichiassus gen. nov. is described based on Cavichiassus punctatus gen. et sp. nov from Southern of Brazil, and can be recognized by the forewing with appendix and first apical cell narrow, more membranous than adjacent cells; the vein separating appendix and first apical cell complete; the protibia with dorsal surface flat and the AD and PD margins carinate, but weakly expanded laterally; the ventral processes of pygofer conspicuous, extending ventrad; the subgenital plate small, simple, without pseudostyles or setae; the connective amorphous; the style with apodeme and apophysis very long; and the aedeagus with dorsal apodeme bearing a pair of processes directed posterad. A new combination is proposed and the male and female genitalia of Neotrocnada rutasaca (Blocker, 1979) comb. nov. are described and illustrated for the first time. Additionally, the host plant is identified for N. rutasaca comb. nov. and a new country record is given for Neotrocnada napoensis Krishnankutty & Dietrich, 2012.

The New Zealand species of marsh beetles Atopida dorsale Broun, 1893 and Atopida testacea Broun, 1880 share several features that differentiate them from other members of Atopida White. Analysis of morphological characters and the structural anatomy of the genitalia justified the description of a new genus to accommodate these two species. Sensory structures of the apical maxillary palpomere are described for the first time in Scirtidae. The presence of lacinial hooks in Scirtidae is discussed. Morphology of female prehensors is described and observations of male and female genitalia during copulation are discussed. Lectotypes of both species are designated.

Following the revision of the three Palaearctic species of the genus Hoplomachus, it appeared that the sole Nearctic species Hoplomachus affiguratus is misplaced in this genus. In addition to a redescription of its external morphology, the male and female genitalia are illustrated for the first time. A generic level analysis of presumedly related Phylinae lead us to erect Delphiphylus n. gen. with its only included species Delphiphylus affiguratus (Uhler, 1895) n. comb.

This first part of a world revision of the Usia Latreille and Parageron Paramonov, tribe Usiini Becker, covers the aberrant species Usia martini François, which is placed in its own species group, and all of the black-haired species. The subgenus Micrusia Evenhuis is redefined and Usia versicolor (Fabricius) and Usia martini François are placed in their own species groups. The 20 species in Micrusia are considered to be monophyletic despite many of them exhibiting strong divergence that obscures their affiliations. Of the 10 formerly available names that belong in the subgenus Micrusia, U. hyalipennis Macquart stat. rev., hitherto synonymised under U. versicolor, is reinstated as a full species while U. pallescens Becker syn. nov., is newly synonymised under U. ignorata Becker. Both sexes of all previously named species are redescribed, for U. carmelitensis Becker, U. hyalipennis, U. martini and U. syriaca Paramonov the male is described for the first time. Twelve new species are described, U. biconvexa sp. nov., U. crispa sp. nov., U. cryptocrispa sp. nov., U. dahli sp. nov., U. dilsi sp. nov., U. echinus sp. nov., U. falcata sp. nov., U. globicauda sp. nov., U. paracrispa sp. nov., U. susanae sp. nov., U. theodori sp. nov. and U. turaco sp. nov. more than doubling the total in Micrusia. Both the male and female genitalia of all 22 species treated in this part are illustrated in detail.

Following the description of Cacochroa rosetella Corley, 2018 it soon became clear that there was considerable confusion regarding the identity of Cacochroa permixtella (Herrich-Schäffer, 1854). In this paper the genus Cacochroa is revised and this confusion is resolved, a neotype is chosen for C. permixtella and nearly all records verified. Male and female genitalia of C. permixtella are remarkably different from those of the remaining species, which are here placed in Rosetea Corley & Ferreira, gen. nov. The distributions of the three species previously described in Cacochroa are clarified. Cacochroa permixtella has a distribution limited to Macedonia, Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey. Rosetea corfuella (Lvovsky, 2000), comb. nov., is recorded for the first time from Crete, Croatia, Macedonia, Turkey and Israel; the male of R. rosetella (Corley, 2018), comb. nov., is described for the first time and the species is recorded for the first time from Spain, France (mainland and Corsica), Italy (mainland and Sardinia), Greece (mainland and Crete), Croatia and Algeria. Rosetea sara sp. nov. is described from North Africa (Morocco and Tunisia). Male and female genitalia and DNA barcode data are presented for all four species.

Three species of the genus Wockia Heinemann, 1870, which are so far known in Russia are reviewed; their male and female genitalia are illustrated, and a key for identification is provided. Two species, W. koreana Sohn, 2008, and W. magna Sohn, 2014, which were recently described from East Asia, are for the first time reported from Russia. The investigation of the holotype of W. funebrella Heinemann, 1870, discovered in the collection of the Zoological Institute RAS (St Petersburg), confirmed that this species is a junior subjective synonym of W. asperipunctella (Bruand, 1851). The distribution of Palaearctic species of the genus is discussed shortly.

The 12 species previously placed in Tortopus together with 3 species newly described here, are revised and included in a phylogenetic analysis. Based on synapomorphic characters on the nymphs and adults of both sexes, Tortopus is restricted to T. igaranus Needham & Murphy, T. circumfluus Ulmer, T. harrisi Traver, T. zottai (Navás), T. bellus Lugo-Ortiz & McCafferty, and T. arenales sp. nov., and the genus is defined by: female parastyli receptors with long furrows anterior to sockets; penes entirely flattened; male ninth abdominal sternum almost separated in two portions by a median notch; mesosternum with furcasternal protuberances contiguous only on basal corner; and nymphs with two subapical tubercles on mandibular tusks. Tortopsis is newly described for T. bruchianus (Navás), T. limoncocha sp. nov., T. obscuripennis (Domínguez), T. parishi (Banks), T. primus (McDunnough), T. puella (Pictet), T. sarae (Domínguez), T. spatula sp. nov., and T. unguiculatus (Ulmer). Tortopsis is characterized by: R sector of female fore wing without additional veins between R 2 and IR; female parastyli receptors C or V-shaped, with sockets opening towards median line; male gonopore associated with a claw-like structure; penes separated from the base; parastyli more than 5 times length of pedestals; parastyli curved in lateral view; nymphs with a single subapical tubercle on mandibular tusks. The study of available type material permitted inclusion of comparative diagnoses, with figures and redescriptions as needed. The male imago of the type species of Tortopus (T. igaranus Needham & Murphy) is described for the first time, as are the female adults of Tortopus bellus Lugo-Ortiz & McCafferty and T. harrisi Traver. Three new Neotropical species based on male and female adults are described: Tortopus arenales and Tortopsis limoncocha from Ecuador, and Tortopsis spatula from Colombia. Keys to separate the adults and nymphs of the genera of Polymitarcyidae, and for male and female adults of all the species of Tortopus and Tortopsis are presented, as well as line drawings, pictures and SEM photographs of important structures.

Four new species of Euphyllodromia Shelford, 1908 (E. spathulata, E. nigromaculata, E. neoelegans and E. spiculata) are described. Their male genitalia are illustrated. The female genitalia of E. spiculata and E. nigromaculata are also illustrated. Diagnostic characters of the head, thorax and abdomen of E. amazonensis Rocha e Silva, 1984 are reiterated, illustrated and combined with the description of the male and female genitalia for the first time. A key is provided to include the species treated here.

AbstractA phylogenetic revision of the Neotropical riodinid genus Calydna Doubleday and relatives is presented. A phylogenetic analysis for all twenty species of Calydna using thirty-eight characters of adult morphology generated four most parsimonious cladograms. Calydna is characterised to contain eighteen species, divided here into three monophyletic species groups with the relationship caieta group + (thersander group + hiria group). A new genus Echydna Hall gen. n. is described for the most basal clade, containing chaseba Hewitson and punctata C. & R. Felder, which are transferred from Calydna (combs. n.). The taxonomy, morphology, biogeography and biology of both genera are discussed, locality data is listed and mapped, and the adults and male and female genitalia are illustrated for all species. Concealed male abdominal androconial scales, which phylogenetically unite the thersander and hiria groups, are reported for the first time outside of the tribes Symmachiini and Nymphidiini. Two new species are described, Calydna jeannea sp. n. and Calydna nicolayi sp. n., and the replacement name fissilisima is provided for the unavailable name fissilis Stichel; maculosa Bates is transferred from Calydna to Callistium Stichel (comb. n.).
