Planothidium incuriatum sp. nov. is described from freshwater samples from Europe and South America. It is compared with the type material of Achnanthes biporoma (=Planothidium biporomum), described from North America, to differentiate it from the new, related species. Species morphologies were compared using both light and scanning electron microscopy. Planothidium incuriatum can be differentiated from P. biporomum by its valve outline with more rostrate apices (instead of capitate) and by the areolation pattern of the striae in the raphe less valve (higher number of rows of areolae per stria). Distribution of P. incuriatum was determined from worldwide iconographic literature records where it was often identified as Planothidium biporomum among other names here detailed. While P. incuriatum appears to be widely distributed around the world, P. biporomum is, according to verified records, far more restricted.

Background and aims – Two unknown benthic diatom species belonging to the genus Achnanthidium Kütz., and found in French and Nepalese freshwater habitats, were investigated. Both species are here described as new and compared with the original material of Achnanthes minutissima var. macrocephala Hust. [≡ Achnanthidium macrocephalum (Hust.) Round & Bukht.] from Indonesia. Methods – The morphology of three small and capitate Achnanthidium species was investigated using light microscopy (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Key results – Achnanthidium coxianum sp. nov. (from the Himalaya) belongs to the group of species with hooked terminal raphe endings, while Achnanthidium peetersianum sp. nov. (from France) has variable terminal raphe endings which are usually slightly bent. Achnanthidium macrocephalum is a much rarer species and illustrations concerning its identity in the literature do not conform to the type studied here. Conclusions – The three species are similar in LM but clearly distinct in SEM. The shape of the areolae and terminal raphe endings separate the species. Achnanthidium macrocephalum has often been misidentified in studies from many areas of the world. It is similar to the new species in valve outline and in its small dimensions.

In this study, seven Mastogloia species belonging of the section Ellipticae are morphologically described through scanning electron microscopy, including two new taxa M. matthaei and M. stellae. They were collected as epiphytes on seagrasses from several tropical (Indonesia), subtropical (Egypt, Greece, Republic of Malta, Turkey) and temperate (Slovenia, Italy) regions of the world. All these species show typical characters of the Hustedt’s section Ellipticae: elliptical valve outline, a flat valve surface and rounded apices. Moreover, this study provides novel information on the frustule ultrastructure and gives update of their current geographical distribution. Some nomenclatural inconsistencies have been resolved with the typification of M. ovulum and the related species, M. emarginata, from the original Miang Besar material in the Hustedt collection.

Abstract The genus Opephora currently contains 37 species and 27 infraspecific taxa. However, the existing literature reveals a wide morphological diversity and the need to establish defining characters to circumscribe the genus as a cohesive and, perhaps, monophyletic group. The type material of Opephora pacifica, the generitype, is analysed. We emend the description of both the species and the genus, the latter also based on published light and scanning electron microscopy observations of closely related species. After review of the available literature, we determined that currently only two species can be ascribed with certainty to the genus Opephora: O. pacifica and O. marina. Based on available literature, it is highly likely that O. fragilarioides also belongs to this genus. We present a table with all known species and infraspecific taxa and make comments regarding their recent transfer to other genera, their current accepted nomenclature, and the genus to which they should probably be ascribed pending the collection of further information.

The New Zealand mudsnail Potamopyrgus antipodarum (Gray, 1843) has been considered as one of the most invasive mollusks worldwide and recently was listed among the 50 most damaging species in Europe. In the present paper, we report for the first time the presence of P. antipodarum in the Maule river basin, Chile. The identity of the species was based on anatomical microdissections, scanning electron microscopy comparisons, and DNA barcode analysis. This finding constitutes the southernmost record of the species until now in this country and South America.

A new diatom species, Neidiomorpha dianshaniana sp. nov., found in Dianshan Lake in Shanghai, China, is described herein. The morphology of N. dianshaniana has been documented by light and scanning electron microscopy. Neidiomorpha dianshaniana valves are elliptical in outline with rostrate apices. Raphe is almost straight and filiform. The axial area is narrow and linear. The central area is small, round to transversely elliptical or irregular. Striae are slightly radiate and almost parallel near the apices. Puncta are arranged in undulating longitudinal rows. Neidiomorpha dianshaniana’s most visible feature is its lack of central constriction, in which respect it differs from the three other species in the genus Neidiomorpha.

The paper describes four new Luticola taxa from the South Shetland Archipelago, Antarctica:  Luticola neglecta sp. nov., L. bogaertsiana sp. nov., L. contii sp. nov. and L. olegsakharovii sp. nov. All new taxa are studied using both light and scanning electron microscopy and compared to other morphologically similar species from (sub-)Antarctica and elsewhere in the world. Data on their ecology and biogeography are added.

During the ‘Tara Pacific 2016–2018 Expedition’, marine benthic diatom samples were collected from several Tuamotu atolls in the South Pacific. Preparation and examination of these samples were conducted following standard methods including light and scanning electron microscopy. A small-celled taxon from the genus Cocconeis Ehrenb. (Bacillariophyceae) is described from the Nukutavake reef, and compared to several other taxa for which the definition is not always clear (e.g., Cocconeis diruptoides Hust. and Cocconeis pseudodiruptoides Foged). The new taxon is present only on one of the investigated Tuamotu atolls, possibly indicating local endemism.

Abstract The species of the eastern North American millipede genus Pseudopolydesmus are reviewed. Synonyms and comprehensive literature citations are provided for each of the eight recognized species. Diagnostic morphology of the genus, including clarification of male gonopod terminology, is reviewed and defined using scanning electron microscopy and high-quality macrophotographic images, including those in which ultraviolet fluorescence was induced to produce detailed images of morphological structures. Based on the examination of available type material, the following eight species are recognized: (1) Pseudopolydesmus erasus; (2) Pseudopolydesmus canadensis; (3) Pseudopolydesmus collinus; (4) Pseudopolydesmus pinetorum; (5) Pseudopolydesmus minor; (6) Pseudopolydesmus caddo; (7) Pseudopolydesmus paludicolus; and (8) Pseudopolydesmus serratus. The species names Polydesmus neoterus and Polydesmus euthetus are here placed as junior subjective synonyms of Ps. minor (both syn. nov.), and Polydesmus natchitoches is placed as a junior subjective synonym of Ps. pinetorum (syn. nov.).

We describe a new member from the genus Navicula Bory sensu stricto using light and scanning electron microscopy. The new species was found in Vietnam, and is a large-celled species with longitudinal grooves present on the valve exterior. Taxa sharing this feature are known from the genus Navicula, as well as the genera Haslea Simonsen, Craticula Grunow, Gyrosigma Hassall and Proschkinia Karajeva. The new species from Vietnam is compared with other, similar taxa of Navicula, and comments are presented about the systematics and biogeography of the group of Navicula species with this characteristic feature.

A new diatom species, Brachysira aristidesii sp. nov., is described from three oligotrophic and mesotrophic reservoirs in Piracicaba River basin, State of São Paulo, Brazil. Descriptions are based on light and scanning electron microscopy. The new species is mainly characterized by rhombic-lanceolate valves with strongly capitated ends, filiform and straight raphe, narrow and linear axial area, slightly radiate striae and transapically elongated areolae. It is compared to Brachysira microcephala, B. silvicola, B. vitrea, B. neoexilis and Nupela brachysiroides. Our findings suggest that Brachysira aristidesii is a species mainly associated to high water transparency, low to moderate conductivity, slightly acidic and low nutrient environments.
