Validation of Hymenasplenium laterepens (Aspleniaceae): evidence from morphology and molecular analyses

The name Hymenasplenium laterepens was first proposed by Cheng and Murakami in 1998 but was not validly published. We recently collected and studied this taxon at its locus classicus in Xishuangbanna, Yunnan Province in China. Molecular phylogenetic analyses and morphological observation of H. laterepens and related species clearly indicate that this is a distinct taxonomic entity worthy of species rank. Phylogenetically, H. laterepens is closely related to H. apogamum and may be involved in the reticulate evolution of the H. apogamum complex, which is comprised of several taxa with different levels of ploidy. Morphologically, H. laterepens is distinguished by the combination of its triangular laminae, large pinnae with acute apices and deeply serrated margins, and ca. 117 chromosomes at meiosis I and 32 spores in each sporangium. This work provides a complete species description and comparison to related species within the genus Hymenasplenium, particularly to other relatives of the “H. unilaterale” group. Hymenasplenium laterepens is described here with diagnosis and type designation.

A new species of the genus Sovia Evans, 1949, viz. S. liuzihaoi Huang & Fan sp. nov. is described from Mt. Ailao, Xinping Yi and Dai Autonomous County, representing a remarkable geographically southward extension of this genus in Yunnan Province, Southwestern China. In general appearance S. liuzihaoi Huang & Fan sp. nov. resembles S. separata magna (Evans, 1932), but in our molecular phylogenetic analyses, this species is clustered with S. lii Xue, 2015. The adults and male genitalia of the new species and related species are illustrated.

We re-examined the taxonomic status of plants treated as Sedum formosanum (Crassulaceae) from Miyako-jima Island of the Ryukyu Islands, Japan, using morphological comparison and molecular phylogenetic analyses with related species. In morphology, plants from Miyako-jima Island bore a close resemblance to the other plants of S. formosanum, but differed in being perennial, polycarpic, and having lateral axillary branches. Molecular analyses based on ITS of nrDNA and six regions of cpDNA sequencing indicated that the Miyako-jima plants formed a distinct subclade. This subclade was part of a polytomy with three other subclades comprising nine taxa endemic to Taiwan and S. formosanum from other areas, including the type locality. Therefore, we propose and describe the Miyako-jima plants as a new subspecies, Sedum formosanum subsp. miyakojimense.

The Hymenasplenium obliquissimum group contains the widespread H. obliquissimum and several geographically restricted species, including H. retusulum, H. wuliangshanense, H. latidens, H. changputungense, H. quercicola, H. szechuanense, H. furfuraceum, H. adiantifrons, and H. filipes. However, the taxonomy of this group is still unclear and needs to be revised because some entities were treated infraspecifically or as synonyms and the validation of some species still needs to be assessed. To formulate a natural classification and investigate the relationships in this group, we collected and studied specimens of species related to the H. obliquissimum group and obtained specimens of species described by Ching at their locus classicus in southwestern China. An integrative taxonomic approach was taken to delimit species in the group using cytological, morphological, and DNA sequence data. Specifically, in the phylogenetic analyses, the H. obliquissimum group was recovered as a monophyletic group, comprising five principal chloroplast lineages. Based on our inferences, we provided taxonomic implications of chloroplast lineages discovered in this study and suggested possible reticulate evolution in the H. obliquissimum group which was interpreted by the incongruence of chloroplast and nuclear phylogenies. Further studies to strengthen the taxonomic of taxa especially those with the co-existence of different ploidy levels are still warranted.

Guepinia alba sp. nov. and G. shanxiense sp. nov. are described and illustrated from Northern China in this paper. Morphologically, G. alba is distinguished from other Guepinia species by whitish basidiomata and 4-spored basidia while G. shanxiense is diagnosed by reddish orange basidiomata and ellipsoid to oblong ellipsoid basidiospores. Molecular phylogenetic analyses based on ITS and nrLSU sequences support the establishment of the two new species.

Four specimens of Phallus were collected during surveys in a Pinus armandii forest in Baoshan, Yunnan Province, China. Macro- and micro-characteristics, together with Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) sequence data, showed that the four specimens belong to a new species, here named Phallus haitangensis. The ITS phylogenetic analyses, morphological descriptions, color photographs, and line drawings are provided, and compared with closely related species in the genus.

Gerhardtia sinensis, as a new species discovered from southern China, is described, illustrated and compared with morphologically similar and phylogenetically related species. Morphologically, it is characterized by its white to yellowish or partially pale yellow pileus with faint striae, subdistant to fairly distant lamellae with intervenose veins, and slightly verruculose basidiospores (4.7–)5.2–6.2(–6.6) × (2.5–)3.0–3.4(–3.8) μm in size. Molecular phylogenetic analyses of the new species and related taxa are performed based on the sequences of nuclear ribosomal large subunit (nrLSU) and nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (ITS).

A new orchid species, Cymbidium yunnanensis (Orchidaceae; Epidendroideae; Cymbidieae), from Yunnan Province, China, is described and illustrated. Based on morphological and molecular analyses, we demonstrate that this new species is similar to C. floribundum, but it differs in its smaller size, leaves 5–15 cm, shorter scape, white flowers with pale purplish markings on its sepals and petals, lip with purplish red blotch, petals narrowly falcate oblong and lip midlobe nearly round with column foot 1.5–2.0 mm long. Phylogenetic analyses based on nuclear ribosomal ITS and plastid (matK, rbcL) DNA sequence data support C. yunnanensis as a new species.

A novel species, Distoseptispora longispora, from submerged wood in Yunnan Province, China, is described and illustrated. The fungus is characterized by macronematous, mononematous, septate conidiophores with monoblastic, integrated, determinate, terminal conidiogenous cells that produce acrogenous, solitary, obclavate, elongated, distoseptate conidia. SSU-ITS-LSU sequence analyses were used to infer the phylogenetic relationship between D. longispora and related species. Both molecular analyses and morphological data well support D. longispora as an independent taxon. A key to Distoseptispora species is provided.

Sorbus dolichofoliolatus (Rosaceae) sp. nov. from Yunnan Province, China, is described and illustrated based on the collections deposited at the herbarium CDBI. The new species is similar to S. rehderiana in infructescence with sparsely rust-brown short hairs, fruit size, and glabrescent leaflets, but the former has longer and wider leaflets, persistent stipules and pinkish fruit color. A molecular phylogenetic analysis supports that the new species is distinguishable from related species in the genus.
