(Nomenclatural novelties in Miconieae (Melastomataceae): new synonym and typifications). This contribution provides diagnostic morphological characters, geographic distribution data, synonymizations and typifications for three species of Miconieae. We clarify the taxonomic status of Clidemia raddiana as a new synonym for Miconia capilliflora and designate its lectotype. For Miconia capillaris and Miconia leptopus, we provide nomenclatural adjustments, due to the similarity of the epithets and morphological characteristics. We also designate a lectotype and a neotype, respectively, for these two species.

Abstract “Dok Hin” is the Thai local name for Selaginella species that form rosettes. They commonly distributes in Siberia, Manchuria, southern China, Japan, the Philippines and Thailand. Morphology of Dok Hin is very resemble leading to misidentification. So, exactly number of species of Dok Hin in Thailand and their differences in morphological characteristics is not well understood. Thus, revision of morphological characters and phylogenetic confirmation of the taxonomic identification are needed. This study aims to examine morphological charateristics and phylogenetic patterns in eight populations of the Dok Hin in Northern Thailand. Morphology of Dok Hin from each populations was quantitatively examined using 15 vegetative and 6 reproductive characters meanwhile phylogenetic analyses was explored by DNA barcode ITS2. The results of the phylogenetic analysis revealed the existence of two species of Dok Hin, S. tamariscina and S. pulvinata. Selaginella tamariscina can be distinguished from S. pulvinata by its presence of a pseudotrunk above ground and ridges of dorsal leaves. On the other hand, the results of phylogenetic analysis indicated the differences among populations of S. pulvinata as well. Chiang Mai populations of S. pulvinata was characterized by peculiar set of characters long leaves and leaf apices look like caudate, while the rest of their populations have shorter leaves and leaf apices look like aristate. It indicates that S. pulvinata has genetic and phenotypic divergence among populations. However, additional studies of Dok Hin populations in other parts of Thailand and studies on different genetic markers are necessary to confirm the taxonomic status of S. pulvinata. The genus Botryosphaeria includes more than 200 epithets, but only the type species, Botryosphaeria dothidea and a dozen or more other species have been identified based on DNA sequence data. The taxonomic status of the other species remains unconfirmed because they lack either morphological information or DNA sequence data. In this study, types or authentic specimens of 16 “Botryosphaeria” species are reassessed to clarify their identity and phylogenetic position. nuDNA sequences of four regions, ITS, LSU, tef1-α and tub2, are analyzed and considered in combination with morphological characteristics. Based on the multigene phylogeny and morphological characters, Botryosphaeria cruenta and Botryosphaeria hamamelidis are transferred to Neofusicoccum. The generic status of Botryosphaeria aterrima and Botryosphaeria mirabile is confirmed in Botryosphaeria. Botryosphaeria berengeriana var. weigeliae and B. berengeriana var. acerina are treated synonyms of B. dothidea. Botryosphaeria mucosa is transferred to Neodeightonia as Neodeightonia mucosa, and Botryosphaeria ferruginea to Nothophoma as Nothophoma ferruginea. Botryosphaeria foliicola is reduced to synonymy with Phyllachorella micheliae. Botryosphaeria abuensis, Botryosphaeria aesculi, Botryosphaeria dasylirii, and Botryosphaeria wisteriae are tentatively kept in Botryosphaeria sensu stricto until further phylogenetic analysis is carried out on verified specimens. The ordinal status of Botryosphaeria apocyni, Botryosphaeria gaubae, and Botryosphaeria smilacinina cannot be determined, and tentatively accommodate these species in Dothideomycetes incertae sedis. The study demonstrates the significance of a polyphasic approach in characterizing type specimens, including the importance of using of DNA sequence data.

Based on an examination of a large number of specimens, considerable variability of the elytral coloration patterns and the parameres of the Asian genus Agnorimus Miyake & Iwase, 1991 are observed; and the taxonomic status of all four described taxa have been re-considered. The result shows that only A. pictus (Moser, 1902) can be recognized as valid species, while A. hayashii Miyake & Iwase, 1991 new synonym is proposed as a new junior synonym of it. The geographic distribution of this genus is significantly expanded, and most of the distributional records are illustrated in a map with intraspecific variations indicated.

The taxonomic status of distinctive populations of the widespread and morphologically variable possum Trichosurus vulpecula was examined. For the analysis, morphological characters (body size, fur colour and skull dimensions), karyotypes, electrophoretic allozyme, and ecological data were compared for as many Trichosurus populations as possible. There are insufficient differences between populations of T. vulpecula to reject a null hypothesis that they comprise a single species. Tasmanian, northern and south-western Australian populations could be retained as subspecies, but insufficient data exist to resolve the specific status of Atheton Tabeland and north-eastern Australian populations. One enigmatic result is that the skull morphometrics and allozymes of T. caninus were not distinguishable from those of sympatric T. vulpecula. However, other morphological characteristics and ecological data provide adequate evidence the T. caninus is a distinct species.

We evaluated the taxonomic status of Orthomnion javense and O. loheri based on morphological characteristics. The primary distinction between the two species on the basis of the leaf border differentiation does not uphold with a prudent examination of Chinese and other Asian specimens. Orthomnion loheri is a new synonym of O. javense, a formerly Malesian species which is newly confirmed for China and is here reported new to Laos. The previously reports of Plagiomnium elimbatum in China were based on some misidentifications of O. javense, and the former is excluded from the Chinese moss flora.

Arma custos and A. chinensis have a very conspicuous difference in the shape of the pronotal humeral angle, but the genitalic morphological characters are ambiguous and difficult to recognize. The aim of this study was to analyze the taxonomic status of A. chinensis and A. custos based on morphological, molecular, and geographical evidence, and to determine whether DNA barcoding could be a useful additional tool for differentiating similar species. The results clearly demonstrate that A. custos and A. chinensis have not diverged into separate species. So, the following new synonym is proposed: Arma chinensis Fallou, 1881 = Arma custos (Fabricius, 1794) syn. nov.. The results also showed that DNA barcoding using the marker COI can resolve insect taxonomic problems.

The Chinese species of the genus Oodescelis Motschulsky, 1845 are revised. Fifteen species belonging to five subgenera are listed. O. (Acutoodescelis) emmerichi Kaszab, 1940 is proposed as subspecies of O. (A.) punctatissima (Fairmaire, 1886) [O. (A.) punctatissima emmerichi Kaszab, 1940, stat. n.]. A new synonym is established: O. (A.) pyripenis Ren, 1999 = O. (A.) punctatissima (Fairmaire, 1886), syn. n. based on the morphological characters, geographic distribution, and assessment on the molecular phylogeny [except O. (A.) pyripenis]. A new subspecies and a new species are described: O. (A.) punctatissima henanana Bai & Ren, subsp. nov. from Henan and O. (Planoodescelis) lii Bai & Ren, sp. nov. from Hubei. Lectotypes for the follwoing species are designated: Platyscelis punctatissima Fairmaire, 1886, Platyscelis (Oodescelis) affinis Seidlitz, 1893, Platyscelis (Oodescelis) brevipennis Kaszab, 1938, Platyscelis (Oodescelis) similis Kaszab, 1938, Oodescelis (Clavatoodescelis) acutanguloides Kaszab, 1940, Oodescelis (Clavatoodescelis) kuntzeni Kaszab, 1940 and Oodescelis (Clavatoodescelis) sachtlebeni Kaszab, 1940. Additional diagnostic characters of the subgenus Planoodescelis Egorov, 2004 are proposed. In addition, newly collected materials are examined, new distribution records, habitus of adults, images of male protibiae and aedeagus are provided, and a key to Chinese species is given. Furthermore, the first and preliminary molecular phylogeny of the genus is presented, and the used markers may be helpful to reconstitute the phylogenetic relations within the tribe Platyscelidini.

Aristolochia Linnaeus (1753: 960) (Aristolochiaceae) comprises about 500 species. The genus has worldwide distribution (Wanke et al. 2006). Recent findings of Aristolochia (Phuphathanaphong 2006, Xu et al. 2011, Huong et al. 2014, Do et al. 2015, Wu et al. 2015), together with the previous treatments for the Flora of Thailand (Phuphathanaphong 1987), the Flora of Vietnam (Pham 2000) and the Flora of China (Huang et al. 2003) confirmed the Thai & Indo-Chinese floristic region as a center of diversity for Aristolochia, with currently about 90 species. A high degree of endemism is found for specific countries (Huang et al. 2003, Phuphathanaphong 2006). However, the delimitation and taxonomic status of some species are still unclear due to limited access to specimen databases, especially for the type specimens in those countries. Notably, recent studies have significantly revised the taxonomic status of several previously described Aristolochia species when herbarium materials from multiple countries in the region were consulted (Do et al. 2014, Do 2016, Zu et al. 2016). On the basis of the examination of the protologue, the type specimens, and recent collections from the herbaria BKF, C, GXMI, HITBC, IBSC, KUN, PE and PEM, we conclude that Aristolochia longeracemosa B. Hansen & Leena Phuphathanaphong (1999: 557), described from collections made in northern Thailand, is conspecific with A. chlamydophylla C.Y. Wu ex S. M. Hwang (1981: 223) from southern China. Hence, we here propose the former as a new synonym of the latter. A detailed comparison of the morphological characters and habitat of these two species is provided.

The taxonomic status of all the nominal genera of the Ariidae are reviewed and ariid genera are diagnosed by exclusive characters as well as by a combination of internal and external morphological features. The results are based on a phylogenetic analysis undertaken by the senior author (Marceniuk, 2003). The species so far recognized are taxonomically reevaluated and considered as valid, inquirendae or synonyms under each diagnosed genus based on direct examination of specimens or use of diagnostic characters available in the literature. A key to identification of genera is provided based on morphological characters that can be easily recognized. In the new classification proposed, Ariidae comprises the following twenty six valid genera: Amissidens, Arius, Aspistor, Bagre, Batrachocephalus, Brustiarius, Cathorops, Cephalocassis, Cinetodus, Cochlefelis, Cryptarius, Doiichthys, Galeichthys, Genidens, Hemiarius, Ketengus, Nedystoma, Nemapteryx, Neoarius, Netuma, Notarius, Osteogeneiosus, Pachyula, Plicofollis, Potamarius and Sciades. Three new genera are erected. The nominal genera Bagre Oken, 1817, Glanis, Stearopterus, Breviceps non Merrem, 1820, Felichthys, Ailurichthys, Mystus non Scopoli, 1777 and Anemanotus are considered junior synonyms of Bagre Cloquet, 1816. Hexanematichthys, Sciadeichthys, Selenaspis, Ariopsis and Leptarius are synonyms of Sciades. The nominal genus Pseudarius is an objective synonym, and Ariodes a subjective synonym, of Arius. Sciadeops is synonymous with Notarius. Catastoma and Sarcogenys are synonyms of Netuma. Tetranesodon is preliminary considered junior synonym of Pachyula. Hemipimelodus is a synonym of Cephalocassis. Septobranchus is a junior synonym of Cinetodus, and Guiritinga is a new synonym of Genidens.

Euptychia saltuensis Hayward, 1962, new synonym, currently regarded as a nomen dubium and possibly a junior subjective synonym of Yphthimoides manasses (C. Felder & R. Felder, 1867), is here treated as a junior subjective synonym of Yphthimoides patricia (Hayward, 1957), based on morphological characters of the male genitalia and the DNA barcode. The taxonomic status of Y. patricia is re-examined, and a detailed redescription of the adult morphology, including the male genitalia, is presented. Information on the distribution, habitat and immature stages of Y. patricia is also provided. Yphthimoides patricia is clearly a distinct species from Y. manasses based on the analysis of DNA barcode sequences and the morphology of the male genitalia.
