Powdery mildews are common pathogens on wild elm trees as well as on planted ornamentals in Asia and Europe. The taxonomy of the powdery Erysiphe species on elms (Ulmus spp., Ulmaceae) is complicated by taxonomical changes and inconsistently labelled DNA data in databases and publications. Based on morphology and phylogenetic analysis of new collections from Germany and Taiwan, E. ulmi from Europe is revised, while specimens on U. parvifolia from East Asia revealed a separate clade indicating an undescribed species. Morphologically, both species can be distinguished by length of the foot cell of the conidiophore, whereas the teleomorph characteristics were not significantly distinctive.

Xylaria fusispora, an undescribed species of Xylaria (Xylariales, Xylariaceae), is described and illustrated as a new species based on collections from Guizhou Province, China. Both morphology and phylogenetic analysis of nrDNA ITS sequences support the establishment of this new species. The fungus is characterized by its fusoid-equilateral ascospores and an ascus apical ring not bluing in Melzer’s reagent. The differences between the new species and the related fungi are discussed.

Ants are one of the most successful and widespread organisms in the world. Although ants of the genus Pachycondyla (Hymenoptera: Formicidae: Ponerinae) are predominantly tropical in distribution, Pachycondyla chinensis (Emery) is especially abundant in temperate zones in Asia. Recently, P. chinensis has also become an abundant invasive ant species in the United States. However, it was well-known that the Pachycondyla chinensis species complex remained unresolved. Our molecular and morphological results allow us to distinguish two species in the species complex: the species P. chinensis and the new cryptic species P. nakasujii sp. nov., and these two species are widely and sympatrically distributed and abundant in temperate forests in Japan. Moreover, phylogenetic analysis showed that P. chinensis has been introduced into the United States from Japan. In conclusion, our finding of the new species P. nakasujii suggests that much remains undiscovered even in biologically fascinating and well-studied organisms.

Colletotrichum has numerous host range and distribution. Its species are important plant pathogens, endophytes and saprobes. Colletotrichum can cause regular or irregular depressions and necrotic lesions in the epidermal tissues of plants. During this research Colletotrichum specimens were collected from Mengyin County, Shandong Province, China. A multi-locus phylogenetic analysis of ITS, GAPDH, CHS-1, ACT, TUB2, CAL and GS sequence data combined with morphology, revealed a new species and two known species, viz. C. mengyinense sp. nov., C. gloeosporioides and C. pandanicola, belonging to the C. gloeosporioides species complex. The new species is described and illustrated in this paper and compared with taxa in the C. gloeosporioides species complex.

O. laevimarginata is here described as a new species, and also its asexual morph could not be assigned to an existing taxon. Anamorphic strains were obtained from three teleomorph specimens which were collected at different sites and dates. The anamorph is characterized by cylindric-ellipsoid to oblong conidia, mainly 1-septate, growing either singly or mostly from 2–10 denticles in a capitate arrangement on the tip of conidiophores. These morphological characters are similar to those of the nematophagous anamorph genus Arthrobotrys, but the present isolates lack the ability to produce any trapping devices when contacting with nematodes. Phylogenetic analysis inferred from ITS rDNA sequences on different groups within Orbilia showed that the isolates of O. laevimarginata clustered together in a clade separate from Orbilia crenatomarginata (= Hyalinia crystallina). The two species are close to O. scolecospora and an undescribed species, which all have a crenulate to dentate apothecial margin composed of solid glassy processes. The group clustered distant from those species identified within the nematode-trapping anamorph genera Arthrobotrys, Dactylellina and Drechslerella, but also distant from the non-predacious anamorph genus Dactylella. By combining morphological and phylogenetic analysis, we conclude that the three isolates belong to a single undescribed holomorph species. The morphological differences among the three isolated anamorphic strains, and phylogenetic divergence of nematode-trapping fungi and related species are discussed.

Apteronotus caudimaculosus, a new species of ghost knifefish with males having greatly elongated snouts, is described from the Pantanal wetlands, Paraguay River basin in Western Brazil. It is distinguished from its congeners by two light bands encircling the caudal peduncle, the first caudal band with irregular spots throughout its development. The presence of two light bands can be used to identify a monophyletic clade in Gymnotiformes, the so-called A. albifrons species complex. This group comprises A. albifrons, A. caudimaculosus and at least six undescribed species. An artificial key to identification of species currently in Apteronotus (sensu stricto) is provided.

Colletotrichum sonchicola, sp. nov. from Sonchus sp. (dandelion tribe) in Forlì-Cesena Province, Italy, is introduced using morphological and molecular data. Combined phylogenetic analysis of ITS, GAPDH, CHS, ACT and TUB2 sequence data demonstrate that C. sonchicola is a distinct species within the dematium species complex. The new species is illustrated and compared with related taxa. This provides the first record of a Colletotrichum species from the genus Sonchus.

Background and aims – The aim of this study is the continuation of an ongoing survey of Hymenochaetaceae (Basidiomycota, Hymenochaetales) from the lower Guinean sub-region in Central Africa. In this frame, a new species of Phylloporia is described from Gabon, based on morphological, ecological and phylogenetic data. Methods – The species is described using morphological methods, and ecological data. DNA-based phylogenetic analysis are also used to search for affinities.Key results – A new species of Phylloporia, P. rinoreae, is described based on specimens collected on living twigs of a shrubby Rinorea species (Violaceae), occurring in the Guineo-Congolian rain forest. Phylogenetic inferences using DNA sequence data from partial nuc 28S (region including the D1/D2/D3 domains) resolved this species as a distinct clade within the Phylloporia lineage. An identification key to the species reported from the Guineo-Congolian phytochorion is provided.Conclusion – Phylloporia rinoreae is the seventh species of the genus described from and so far only known from Gabon in the Lower Guinean phytogeographical sub-region.

A new species of the genus Odontocheila Laporte de Castelnau, 1834 is described from Brazil as Odontocheila parafemoralis sp. nov. Along with other species previously treated as subspecies of O. cajennensis (Fabricius, 1787), the new species is classified here as a species of the O. cajennensis species-complex (within the O. cajennensis species-group). It was commonly confused in collections with O. bipunctata (Fabricius, 1792) and O. femoralis Chaudoir, 1860. Specimens from Itaituba, Rio Tapajoz, Pará (the type locality of the new species) were previously considered by the present author to be aberrant adults of O. oseryi (Lucas, 1857) and were also included within the species in the taxonomic revision of the genus (Moravec 2018). A recent examination of numerous specimens from Itaituba has revealed that they represent an undescribed species, which is diagnostically separated from all taxa of the O. cajennensis species-complex. Consequently, it is described here as new to science. Illustrations of the habitus, diagnostic characters and variability of the new species and distinguishing characters of similar species are presented in colour photographs. A revised key to species of the O. cajennensis species-complex (within the complete O. cajennensis species-group) is presented with reference to the taxonomic revision of the genus (Moravec 2018). An essential map of distribution is also given.

In the course of a taxonomic revision of Miconia sect. Lima, we discovered a previously undescribed species, Miconia paralimoides, from the Cordillera Central, Dominican Republic. This species is part of the Miconia lima species complex, and is most similar morphologically to Miconia limoides. We illustrate and provide a distribution map of the species, as well as a key to distinguish M. paralimoides from other members of the Miconia lima complex, i.e., species with very well-developed, bulla-based hairs on the adaxial leaf surface, which mostly or completely cover the areoles.

A new species, Colletotrichum artocarpicola, on Artocarpus heterophyllus from Chiang Rai, Thailand, is introduced using both morphological and molecular approaches. Combined phylogenetic analysis of ITS, GAPDH, CHS-1, ACT and TUB2 sequence data demonstrate that Colletotrichum artocarpicola is a distinct species within the gloeosporioides species complex. The new species is illustrated and compared with related taxa, and evidence of its pathogenicity is provided.
