Update to the zodariid spider fauna of the Iberian Peninsula and Madeira (Araneae: Zodariidae)

This paper describes three new species of the genus Zodarion from the Iberian Peninsula: Z. alentejanum, Z. cesari, and Z. costapratae. One species, Z. lusitanicum, is newly recorded for Spain. In total 46 zodariid species are known from the Iberian Peninsula to date, of which 22 species are recorded from Portugal and 35 species from Spain. New faunistic records and distribution maps are given for another 18 zodariid taxa, either in the Iberian Peninsula or Madeira: Amphiledorus balnearius, Selamia reticulata, Zodarion alacre, Z. algarvense, Z. atlanticum, Z. costablancae, Z. duriense, Z. fuscum, Z. gregua, Z. jozefienae, Z. machadoi, Z. maculatum, Z. marginiceps, Z. merlijni, Z. pseudoelegans, Z. styliferum styliferum, Z. styliferum extraneum, and Z. viduum.

Little is known about the taxonomy and distribution of terrestrial planarians on the Iberian Peninsula. Few studies have tried to investigate the local diversity of these animals, due to both their lack of economic interest and their low abundance. In this study we have made extensive searches and collections of terrestrial planarians from the Iberian Peninsula, thus gathering new information on their taxonomy and biogeography. The study includes the description of three new species of the genus Microplana, viz. Microplana aixandrei sp. nov., Microplana grazalemica sp. nov., and Microplana gadesensis sp. nov. We present distribution maps summarizing published and new records of land planarians. The present work substantially increases our knowledge on this group of animals in Spain and Portugal and at the same time also evidences the scarcity of data and studies on the biology of these organisms.

Three new species of Anaulacomera are described, Anaulacomera (Anaulacomera) mariellae sp. n. and Anaulacomera (Anallomes) arlindoi sp. n., belonging respectively to the Inermis and Lanceolata species group, and Anaulacomera angelinae sp. n., placed as incertae sedis. The individuals were collected at the Iguaçu National Park and adjacent small fragments of Atlantic Forest, in southwestern Paraná state, Brazil. The description was based on external morphology of males. We also present distribution maps for the species of the Inermis and the Lanceolata species groups.

The Brazilian species of Bittacus Latreille (Mecoptera: Bittacidae) are reviewed and one new synonym is proposed (Thyridates willmanni Collucci & Amorin syn. n. of Bittacus diversinervis Souza Lopes & Mangabeira). Three new species are herein described: Bittacus cruzi sp. n. from Amazonas, Presidente Figueiredo and Manaus, B. ferreirai sp. n. from Bahia, Aracatu and B. varzeanus sp. n. from Amazonas, Tefé, bringing the current number of Bittacus species in Brazil to 18. Illustrations, comments, and distribution maps of each species are presented. An identification key to the Brazilian genera of Mecoptera and Bittacus species is also presented.

We review species of Parodon Valenciennes, 1850 from the Magdalena, Cauca, Orinoco, Amazonas, Atrato and Caribbean-Guajira River basins of Colombia using meristic and morphological characters. We recognize eight valid species, five previously described: P. apolinari Myers, from the Orinoco River basin; P. buckleyi Boulenger and P. pongoensis (Allen) from the upper Amazon; P. caliensis Boulenger, from the upper Cauca River drainage; and P. suborbitalis Valenciennes, from Lake Maracaibo basin. Three new species are described: P. alfonsoi, from the lower Magdalena River drainage; P. magdalenensis, from the middle Magdalena and upper Cauca River drainages; and P. atratoensis, from the Atrato River basin. We redescribe Parodon suborbitalis using type specimens and topotypes, and designate lectotypes. A taxonomic key is included for identification of the species, as well as geographic distribution maps.

The Iberian Peninsula is a repository for biodiversity, presenting high levels of endemism in both plants and animals. In this peninsular region, brook lampreys confined to small, isolated river basins evolved in allopatry giving rise to evolutionary lineages, as revealed by mitochondrial DNA markers. For a better understanding of the taxonomic status and relationships of Iberian populations of the genus Lampetra, we combined previous data from genetics and morphological analysis (assessed here), and describe three new species of the lamprey genus Lampetra Bonnaterre, 1788 in Portugal. In this region L. planeri actually represent a complex of cryptic species, each having smaller geographic ranges than L. planeri, and consequently, greater vulnerability to extinction. The description of Lampetra alavariensis sp. nov. is based on 36 specimens collected on Ribeira de Mangas, a tributary of river Esmoriz, in Northern Portugal. Lampetra auremensis sp. nov. is described on the basis of 31 specimens collected on Ribeira do Olival, a small tributary of river Nabão (Tagus basin). Finally, Lampetra lusitanica sp. nov. is described based on 38 specimens from Ribeira da Marateca, Sado river basin, the southernmost distribution of the genus Lampetra. The recognition of these new species will contribute to the conservation of these already imperilled taxa and will help prevent the extinction of three important evolutionary lineages.

The genus Synaxis is synonymized with Tetracis. The thirteen North American species in genus Tetracis (some formerly in Synaxis) are discussed, including descriptions of three new species from western North America: Tetracis australis, T. montanaria, T. pallidata. Two additional species, “Synaxis” triangulata and “S.” brunneilinearia are excluded. A key to species, descriptions, check list, illustrations of adults and genitalia, and distribution maps are included. The formerly presumed lost types of the taxa aurantiacaria, cervinaria, and jubararia were located and are illustrated.

Twelve North American species of the section Cordatae of the genus Salix (willows) were studied to clarify their taxonomy. The sections Adenophyllae (Commutatae) and Wolfianae are included here in section Cordatae. Characteristics of the epidermal cells and pollen grains were of no taxonomic value. Chromosome counts were obtained for 6 of the 12 species. One other species had been counted earlier. There are three diploid species, two tetraploids, and a hexaploid. One other species (?) has both diploid and tetraploid populations. Flavonoid chemistry of the leaves was the most important and constant characteristic. Each species has a consistent combination of compounds different from those of all other species of the section. Cytology, chemistry, morphology, and distribution were well correlated. Keys to pistillate material, synonymy, descriptions, distribution maps, and representative specimens are included. Three new species are described and one varietal transfer is made.

AbstractThe genus Ericydeus Pascoe (Polydrosinae: Naupactini) distributed throughout the United States of America up to Argentina is revised and a cladistic analysis including 16 species is conducted. Three new species are described: E. bahiensis, E. argentinensis and E. cupreolus. Ericydeus humeralis Hustache is synonymized under E. nigropunctatus (Chevrolat); and E. modestus viridans (Boheman) and E. modestus duodecimpunctatus (Dalla-Torre, Emden & Emden) are elevated to species rank. Other valid species are: E. hancocki (Kirby), E. schoenherri (Perty), E. sedecimpunctatus (Linnaeus), E. yucatanus (Champion), E. roseiventris (Champion), E. quadripunctatus (Champion), E. modestus (Gyllenhal), E. forreri (Champion), E. lautus (LeConte) and E. placidus (Horn). In the cladogram obtained the species from South America gather in a clade (E. argentinensis, E. sedecimpunctatus, E. nigropunctatus, E. schoenherri, E. hancocki, and E. bahiensis) and the species from Central and North America form a separate clade (E. yucatanus, E. roseiventris - E. quadripunctatus, E. cupreolus, E. viridans - E. modestus, E. duodecimpunctatus, E. forreri, E. lautus - E. placidus). The character evolution follows a southern-northern direction. The paper includes a redescription of the genus, redescriptions or descriptions of its 16 species, a dichotomous key, habitus photographs, drawings of diagnostic structures, distribution maps, a cladogram, and a discussion of the phylogeny and distribution of the genus.

Thirty-two species of Elateridae are listed from the central region of the Zagros Mountains in western Iran. Three new species, Elathous zagrosensis sp. n., Zorochros dilatatus sp. n., and Dicronychus iranicus sp. n. are described. Cardiophorus bellus Platia & Gudenzi, is recorded for the first time from Iran. Distribution maps and climate data are presented for all species.

This paper presents a taxonomic study of genus Vincetoxicum s.str. from southern Asia. Eleven regional endemic species are recognized on the basis of herbarium studies and fieldwork. Three new species are described: V. lenifoliumsp. nov. (endemic to Pakistan), V. stewartianumsp. nov. (endemic to India), and V. subcanescenssp. nov. (endemic to Pakistan, Kashmir and Tibet). Three species names, V. cabulicum, V. glaucum and V. kenouriense, previously treated as synonyms of V. glaucum, V. canescens and V. hirundinaria, respectively, are resurrected. A neotype is designated for the Afghani endemic V. cabulicum. A lectotype is chosen from the syntypes of V. glaucum. We resolve the long-standing taxonomic problems in three species complexes: V. arnottianum, V. luridum, V. sakesarense, and V. stocksii; V. glaucum, V. canescens and V. cabulicum; and V. hirundinaria and V. kenouriense. Geo-taxonomic distinctions of southern Asian taxa are highlighted by excluding from henceforth the long misrecognized western Eurasian taxa V. canescens and V. hirundinaria. Furthermore, a detailed account of the genus including illustrations of whole plants, leaves and corona, distribution maps, a taxonomic key, morphological descriptions, synonymy, notes, and information on phenology, distribution and habitats is provided. Finally, provisional conservation assessments are provided, which indicate that V. cardiostephanum and V. sakesarense are critically endangered.
