A new species of Neoferdina and three new records of sea stars (Echinodermata: Asteroidea) collected from Kumejima Island, southwestern Japan

Sea stars were collected at depths ranging from 91 to 160 m around Kumejima Island situated in the middle of the RyukyuIslands chain in the Western Pacific. Sampling was carried out using a dredge or beam trawl in November 2009, as partof the KUMEJIMA 2009 Expedition. The specimens included an undescribed species of the genus Neoferdina, and threespecies that have never been reported in Japanese waters. Features that characterise this new species, Neoferdina longi-brachia, include: extremely long and narrow arms, no alternating arrangement of large and small superomarginal plates,body surface (except for the marginal plates) completely covered with granules, and an adambulacral armature with 3 furrow spines.

A new species,Poecilochaetus anterospinussp. nov., is described from the east and south shores of Oahu, Hawaii.Poecilochaetus anterospinussp. nov. is unique in the genus by the presence of noto- and neuropodial spines from chaetiger 11 to posterior segments. Neuropodial spines on anterior chaetigers are absent in all otherPoecilochaetusspecies while notopodial spines are limited to segments preceding the pygidium.Poecilochaetuscf.koshikiensis, originally described from Japan, is newly recorded from Hawaii and apparently widely distributed in the western Pacific and South-east Asian Seas.Poecilochaetussp. is distinguished from the other two species by the distribution of the ampullaceous cirri (7–12) and its chaetal characters.

An annotated checklist with complementary information for leptophlebiid mayflies from Tocantins State, Brazil is provided. Additionally, we describe a new species of Thraulodes Ulmer, 1920 based on male adults. New reports are based on collections conducted between August 2017 and August 2019 in 13 localities of 10 municipalities. A total of 436 adults distributed in 11 genera, 16 species and five morphospecies treated as undescribed species were collected. Of the total species examined, 11 are new records.

Four specimens ofStereomastiswere caught by beam-trawl on 07 August 2011 at a depth of 1000 m in the western deep basin, around the submarine thermal vent site, along the North Anatolian Earthquake Fault, in the Sea of Marmara. These specimens appeared to belong to an as yet undescribed species. As a result,Stereomastis artuzisp. nov. is described in this study as a new species in the family Polychelidae (Decapoda, Polychelida; also alternatively classified under Decapoda, Palinura, Eryonoidea).

Species of the family Anthomyzidae (Diptera: Acalyptrata) occurring in Taiwan are reviewed. Eleven species have been recognized, 8 of them new to science. However, because of limited and poorly preserved material, only three species of the genus Anthomyza Fallén, 1810, viz. A. robusta sp. nov. (Chiayi and Nantou Counties, both sexes), A. caesarea sp. nov. (Taichung City area, both sexes) and A. elongata sp. nov. (Chiayi County, female only), are described. The remaining 5 undescribed species, viz. Amygdalops sp. nov. near cuspidatus (Taichung City area), Amygdalops sp. nov. near curtistylus (Nantou and Kinmen Counties), Anthomyza sp. nov. near elongata (Yilan County), Anthomyza sp. nov. (1) near flavosterna (Chiayi County) and Anthomyza sp. nov. (2) near flavosterna (Nantou County), are diagnosed but remain unnamed. A new species group of Anthomyza, viz. the A. flavosterna group, is established and diagnosed, to include the East Palearctic A. flavosterna Sueyoshi & Roháček, 2003, A. caesarea sp. nov., A. elongata sp. nov. and 3 additional unnamed species from Taiwan, while the remaining A. robusta sp nov. belongs to the A. bellatrix group. All six Taiwanese Anthomyza species seem to be associated with montane habitats and could be endemic. It is estimated that up to 20 species of Anthomyzidae could occur in Taiwan. The longitudinal dark pattern of the wing, found in A. caesarea sp. nov., is recorded for the first time in the genus Anthomyza which is the fourth lineage of Anthomyzidae in which this type of pattern has independently evolved. Preliminary keys to Taiwanese species of the genera Amygdalops Lamb, 1914 and Anthomyza are presented.

The Polyxenidae in the fauna of the Crimeo-Caucasian region is represented by four species: Polyxenus lagurus (Linnaeus, 1758) (= P. lagurus caucasicus Lignau, 1924, syn. n.), Propolyxenus argentifer (Verhoeff, 1921) comb. n. (= P. trivittatus Verhoeff, 1941, = P. sokolowi Lignau, 1924, both syn. n.), a new species, Polyxenus lankaranensis sp. n., and an undescribed Polyxenus sp. The distributions of all these species in the region concerned are mapped, based on old and new records. A molecular phylogeny based on COI sequences is used to study the relationship within and among the genera Polyxenus and Propolyxenus from Western Europe to the southern Caucasus. The results highlight the presence of a number of undescribed species of Polyxenus across this region.

Polychaetes from the Mariana Islands of Guam and Saipan have been characterized in previous studies but a thorough taxonomic study of the cirratulids has only been possible recently. Here we report on two new records,Caulleriella pacificaandChaetozone flagellifera, and a new species,Monticellina lueldredgei, sp. nov. The speciesC. pacificais newly recorded for the western Pacific whileC. flagelliferais reported for the first time since its original description. The new speciesM. lueldredgeiis unique in the genus with respect to the ultrastructure and segmental origin of the modified capillaries as well as for the distinctive methyl green staining pattern.

Japanese waters contain a highly diverse echinoderm fauna including many undiscovered species, especially in deeper-water settings. Molecular phylogenetic data has shown a close relationship between three established families of asteroids, the Asterinidae, the Solasteridae and the Ganeriidae, which are three groups that are well-represented in the region. We present two undescribed species of solasterids, Lophaster cactorum n. sp. and Paralophaster gomo n. sp., the latter represents a genus which had previously been known primarily from Antarctic settings. New occurrence records of the tropical deep-sea Pacific solasterid Rhipidaster vannipes Sladen, 1889 has led to synonymy of Xenorias polyctenius Fisher, 1913. Three undescribed species of Hyalinothrix, Hyalinothrix diversus n. sp., Hyaliothrix enoki n. sp. and Hyalinothrix virtrispinum n. sp. are described. Nepanthia grangei McKnight, 2001 is transferred to Hyalinothrix. A new subfamily, the Hyalinothricinae is established within the Asterinidae, including Tarachaster and Seriaster, which was formerly assigned to the Solasteridae. Knightaster is reassigned to the Asterinidae from the Ganeriidae.

Parapachymorpha is one of eight genera within the tribe Medaurini of subfamily Clitumninae (Phasmatidae). It was established by Brunner von Wattenwyl (1893), with the type species Parapachymorpha nigra by subsequent designation of Kirby (1904), from Myanmar. Species of this genus are widely distributed in oriental tropics (Laos, China, Thailand, Myanmar, Vietnam and Cambodia), with only 11 known species in the world (Brock et al. 2018, Ho 2017). Species of the genus Parapachymorpha can be recognized by following characters (Brunner von Wattenwyl 1893;1907, Henmemann & Conle 2008, Ho 2017): 1) body robust in female and slender in male with long leg in relation to the length; 2) body surface of female granulose or spinose; 3) mesonotum of female more and less expanded posteriorly; 4) abdominal tergites lacking expanded prostero–lateral angles in both sexes; 5) laminal supraanalis undeveloped in female; 6) semi–tergite of male irregularly rectangular, with an additional finger­–like ventro–apical appendix on the lower margin and reduced or absent; 7) egg capsule oval to oblong and covered with a raised net–like structure in lateral view; 8) micropylar plate oval; 9) operculum concave or convex. In the present study, we describe additional species, Parapachymorpha minuta sp. nov. from Laos, with photographs of both sexes of adults and egg.

The subfamily Acastinae contains a diverse group of barnacles that are obligate symbionts of sponges and alcyonacean and antipatharian corals. Integrating morphological and genetic (COI) data to compare against known species, this paper reports on nine species of sponge-inhabiting barnacles of the subfamily Acastinae, including three undescribed species (Acasta caveata sp. nov., Euacasta acutaflava sp. nov., and E. excoriatrix sp. nov.) and three species previously not recorded in Australian waters (A. sandwichi, Pectinoacasta cancellorum, and P. sculpturata). The new species are distinguished from similar species by a suite of morphological characters as well as genetic distances. A lectotype for Pectinoacasta cancellorum is designated. Sponge hosts were identified for all specimens where possible and are represented by 19 species from eight families and five orders.
