A new species of spider mite, Oligonychus neocastaneae sp. nov. (Acari: Tetranychidae), from Japan

A new species Oligonychus neocastaneae sp. nov. is described and illustrated from Castanea crenata Sieb. et Zucc. (Fagaceae). The new species closely resembles Oligonychus castaneae Ehara & Gotoh, 2007, which inhabits the same host plant, Castanea crenata, but mainly differs by the aedeagus in having a longer distal portion which forms a small sigmoid and acuminate tip, instead of having a shorter distal portion which ends in a truncate tip. Several differences were also observed between the two species in the leg setal counts of tarsus II in the male and female; the number of tactile setae and solenidia (in parentheses) was 11(1) for the female and male in the new species, but in O. castaneae this count is 12(1) for the female and 12(2) for the male. A maximum likelihood tree based on the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) showed that O. neocastaneae sp. nov. was clearly separated from O. castaneae and other related species. A key to all species of the genus Oligonychus known in Japan is given.

Three new species of Eotetranychus (Acari: Tetranychidae) are described and illustrated from Japan. The new species and their host plants are as follows: Eotetranychus palatiensis sp. nov. from Morus australis Poiret (Moraceae), Eotetranychus carpinicolus sp. nov. from Carpinus laxiflora (Siebold et Zuccarini) Blume and C. cordata Blume (Betulaceae), and Eotetranychus linderae sp. nov. from Lindera umbellata Thunberg (Lauraceae). A maximum likelihood tree extracted from the above-mentioned species based on the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) indicated that these species are clearly separated from each other and from selected related species. A key to all Eotetranychus species known in Japan is given.

The genus Elliptera Schiner, 1863 is represented by ten species worldwide, but immatures of only the European species E. omissa Schiner has been described so far. Molecular methods were used to associate larvae and adults for two East Asian species from South Korea. Elliptera jacoti Alexander and E. zipanguensis zipanguensis Alexander are common species in aquatic, hygropetric habitats in mountainous parts of the Korean peninsula. Elliptera mongolica Podeniene, Podenas & Gelhaus sp. nov. from Mongolia and China (Inner Mongolia) is described based on mitochondrial DNA COI gene barcode sequences and morphological characters of larvae. Larvae of all three species and pupae of E. jacoti are described and illustrated. Morphological characters of the larvae useful for discrimination of species are given. An identification key for East Asian larvae of the genus Elliptera is compiled.

We sampled two forms of Leptobrachium in syntopy at the type locality of L. pullum at upper elevations on the Langbian Plateau, southern Vietnam. The two forms differed in morphology (primarily in coloration), mitochondrial DNA, and male advertisement calls. One form closely agrees with the type series of L. pullum (but not to its original description due to error), and the other is described as new. Leptobrachium leucops sp. nov. is distinguished from its congeners by having small body size (males with SVL 38.8–45.2), the upper one-third to one-half of iris white, a blue scleral arc, a dark venter, and sexually active males without spines on the upper lip. Leptobrachium pullum and L. mouhoti, a recently described species from low-elevation slopes of the Langbian Plateau in eastern Cambodia, are morphologically divergent but genetically similar, warranting further investigation into geographic variation in the red-eyed Leptobrachium of southern Indochina.

Liopeltis is a genus of poorly known, infrequently sampled species of colubrid snakes in tropical Asia. We collected a specimen of Liopeltis from Pulau Tioman, Peninsular Malaysia, that superficially resembled L. philippina, a rare species that is endemic to the Palawan Pleistocene Aggregate Island Complex, western Philippines. We analyzed morphological and mitochondrial DNA sequence data from the Pulau Tioman specimen and found distinct differences to L. philippina and all other congeners. On the basis of these corroborated lines of evidence, the Pulau Tioman specimen is described as a new species, L. tiomanica sp. nov. The new species occurs in sympatry with L. tricolor on Pulau Tioman, and our description of L. tiomanica sp. nov. brings the number of endemic amphibians and reptiles on Pulau Tioman to 12.

Only three species of Trichomyia Haliday have been recorded in Mexico. Trichomyia cirrata Coquillett, 1902, is recognized by its female characteristics, T. fairchildi Vargas and D az-N jera, 1953, was described based only on the wing and must be considered as species inquirenda, and T. maldonadoi (Vargas, 1953), which was described based on one female specimen. Specimens of Trichomyia collected in the states of Campeche, Yucatan, and Oaxaca, Mexico, allowed this female to be associated with the male of T. brevitarsa (Rapp, 1945), thus providing a first report of this species in Mexico. Consequently, T. maldonadoi is proposed as a synonym of T. brevitarsa. Additionally, a new species of Trichomyia from the state of Veracruz, Mexico, is described and illustrated based on the male and female characteristics.

The male and female of Neotanais krappschickelae n.sp., from the Subantarctic off the Falkland Islands are described from the RV Eltanin deep-water cruises of 1962. Both male and female of the new species can be separated from other species by the combination of characters including: a densely setose dorsal margin of the cheliped carpus, dactylus and fixed finger of subequal length; cheliped sclerite, all pereopodal bases, and posterior-lateral edges of pereonites with numerous plumose setae. The recent activity within tanaidacean taxonomy including neotanaid taxonomy has made it necessary to re-diagnose Neotanais.

A new species of the Cyrtodactylus irregularis group is described from Ninh Thuan Province, southern Vietnam based on molecular divergence and morphological differences. Cyrtodactylus orlovi sp. nov. is distinguished from the remaining Indochinese bent-toed geckos by having the unique combination of the following characters: size medium (SVL 61.0–77.7 mm); dorsal tubercles in 16–20 irregular rows; 36–39 ventral scale rows; precloacal pores absent in females, 5 or 6 in males, in a continuous row; femoral pores absent; 3–8 enlarged femoral scales; postcloacal spurs 1 or 2; lamellae under toe IV 16–19; a continuous neckband; a highly irregular transverse banded dorsal pattern; the absence of transversely enlarged median subcaudal scales. In phylogenetic analyses, the new species was revealed to be the sister taxon to a clade consisting of Cyrtodactylus cattienensis and the most recently described species from Vietnam, C. chungi, with 12.1–12.4% and 11.7 % pairwise genetic divergence from the two species, respectively, based on a fragment of the mitochondrial COI gene.

A second species of the previously monotypic plant bug genus Campyloneura, C. joceliae sp. nov. is described based on specimens from Nkolbisson, Cameroon. A key, differential diagnoses, digital habitus images, illustrations of male and female genitalic structures, and scanning micrographs of diagnostic morphological structures are provided for the new species and C. virgula (Herrich-Schaeffer, 1835).

Parapteronemobius contains 7 species or subspecies distributed in East Asia with only one species recorded from China. In this study, we reported the second species, P. chenggong He sp. nov., from Zhejiang. The new species differs from P. dibrachiatus in body size, male genitalia and COI gene. The phylogeny of this genus in subfamily Nemobiinae are discussed based on COI, 18S and 28S genes. The type specimens are deposited in the Museum of Biology, East China Normal University (ECNU).

The E. ovina group of species is proposed here to include Edessa ovina Dallas, 1851 from Trinidad and Tobago, Colombia, Paraguay, Brazil, Argentina (new records) and Guyana; E. impura Bergroth, 1891 from Brazil and Argentina (new record); E. sahlbergii Stål, 1872 restricted to Brazil; and E. graziae sp. nov. from Brazil and Argentina. The E. ovina group can be identified by the apex of the second pair of wings narrowing distally and by a tumid area on the ventral surface of the pygophore (male genitalia) projected posteriorly. Descriptions, measurements, and illustrations of the metasternal process, external and internal genitalia of male and female are provided. A map with the distribution of the species is presented. The holotype of Edessa ovina is designated here. Edessa argali Breddin, 1903 is considered a junior synonym of E. impura. Females of E. ovina and E. impura, and male of E. sahlbergii are described for the first time.
