A new genus and two new species of planthopper in the tribe Cenchreini (Hemiptera: Auchenorrhyncha: Derbidae) from lowland tropical rainforest in Costa Rica

Recent survey work for planthoppers at La Selva Biological Station in Costa Rica found two new species allied with Cenchrea Westwood. The cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) and 18S were sequenced for the new taxa and used these data to assess the genus-level standing of the new taxa. The new taxa do not cluster with Cenchrea dorsalis Westwood, the type species of Cenchrea. A new genus Tico gen. n. described for the reception of new species described as Tico emmettcarri sp. n. (the type species) and Tico pseudosororius sp. n. Cenchrea sororia Fennah is moved to Tico gen. n., to form the new combination Tico sororius (Fennah). Tico gen. n. is compared with allied genera, and review genus-level diagnostic features and the species composition of Cenchrea, which appears to be compositionally heterogenous, but additional data is needed to evaluate genus-level placement of most species.

AbstractThe purpose of this paper is a comparative morphological study of the little known monotypic weevil genus Araxia Khnzorian, 1957 and its close allies; redescriptions and figures are provided. A new systematic position for Araxia is proposed and discussed, its affinity with Chiloneus Schoenherr, 1842 and a new genus Holcolydoprus gen. n. is demonstrated. A new genus Holcolydoprus gen. n. is described with two new species H. bimaculatus sp. n. (type species) from Turkmenistan and H. griseus sp. n. from Transcaucasia and Eastern Turkey. The genus Aomus Schoenherr, 1834 is transferred from the tribe Laparocerini to Sciaphilini, its affinity with Eusomomorphus K. Daniel, 1905 is demonstrated. A new combination Eusomomorphus ilerii (Fremuth & Lodos, 1987), comb. n. is established for Aomus ilerii. A key to genera centering around Araxia is given.

Boucekinus gen. nov. and two new species, B. masneri sp. nov. from Ecuador and B. tatianae sp. nov. from Costa Rica, are described; B. tatianae is designated as the type species. Boucekinus tatianae was reared from cecidomyiid galls on Anemopaegma chrysoleucum (Bignoniaceae) and B. masneri was collected by canopy fogging. The placement of this new genus within Torymidae is discussed.

A new genus and two new species of fossil hermit crabs (Anomura, Paguroidea) are described from the southern Pyrenean basins (Huesca, NE Spain). Parapetrochirus nov. with P. robustus n. gen., n. sp., as type species, comes from the lower Eocene (Ypresian) Roda Formation. It preserves both chelipeds exhibiting a notable heterochely, a larger left cheliped and a concavity without granulation in the inner upper portions. Eocalcinus gerardbretoni n. sp. comes from the highest levels of the Arguis Formation (Priabonian) in Yeste locality. This species is characterized by a hemispherical outline and a sinuous lower margin of the chela, which differs from the type species of the genus. The cheliped morphology of such species allows inclusion in the families Diogenidae and Calcinidae, respectively. Fossil paguroids are relatively rare in the Eocene of Spain, therefore, the description of these two new taxa increases the known diversity of this group. Parapetrochirus robustus n. gen., n. sp. inhabited siliciclastic substrates within a prodelta environment and E. gerardbretoni n. sp. was collected from the last levels of coral rudstones just below the continental influence of Yeste-Arrés Formation.

Two Palaearctic genera, Paragona Staudinger, 1892 and Paragabara Hampson, 1926, in the subfamilies Aventiinae and Hypeninae respectively are revised. The genus Paragona is recognized as a member of the subfamily Aventiinae. Paragona nemorata sp. n. is described as new and Paragona inchoata (Wileman, 1911) is reported for China for the first time. The genus Paragabara is recognized as a member of the subfamily Hypeninae. A lectotype is designated for P. flavomacula (Oberthür, 1880) and a new species Paragabara curvicornuta sp. n. described. Paragabara ochreipennis Sugi, 1962 and Remmigabara secunda, comb. n. are reported for the first time from China; Paragabara secunda Remm, 1973 is removed from the genus Paragabara. In addition, a new genus Remmigabara gen. n., with type species Paragabara secunda, is described in the subfamily Aventiinae. Adults and genitalia of the new taxa are illustrated and compared to related taxa.

Two new genera and three species of the Pantheinae are described. The genus Flavala gen. n. (type-species Acronycta flavala Moore, 1867) is separated from Anacronicta Warren, 1909. The new combination Flavala flavala (Moore, 1867) comb. n. is introduced. Two new species, Flavala crypta sp. n. and F. secunda sp. n. are described based on the result of barcoding of mitochondrial DNA. The new genus Xizanga gen. n. (type-species Xizanga mysterica sp.n.) is tentatively placed in Pantheinae.

A new genus, Mapuchea gen. nov. from Chile, is described with Myerslopia chilensis NIELSON, 1996 (type species) and two new species (Mapuchea burckhardti sp. nov. and Mapuchea hamiltoni sp. nov.). The nymphs of an unidentfied species of Mapuchea are also described. Four new species of the New Zealand genus Myerslopia Ev. (M. rakiuraensis sp. nov., M. whakatipuensis sp. nov., M. tawhai sp. nov. and M. tearohai) are described. Additional data on the distribution of some species of the genus Pemmation HMLT. are also presented.

Thoracican cirripedes from the Cretaceous (Albian– Maastrichtian) of Europe (UK, France, Germany) and North Africa (Morocco, Tunisia) are described taxonomicallyand significantly aug - ment the diversity previously known from these regions. The new taxa include: a new zeugmatole - padid, Subsecolepas gen. nov. (type species: S. holtwilsoni sp. nov.), three new cretiscalpellid genera, Witherscalpellum gen. nov., Jagtscalpellum gen. nov. and Striascalpellum gen. nov., including the new species J. africanum, J. spinosum, S. bromleyi , S. barringtonensis and S. elegans and a new scalpellid of the genus Regioscalpellum , R. kennedyi. In addition, the Virgiscalpellinae subfam. nov. includes two new genera, Collinslepas and Virgilepas, with the new species C. aitlaminensis, C. robustus , C. tunisiensis, V. aboudaensis, V. peakei and V. hancocki. Paedomorphic evolution in the sub-family led to forms with reduced numbers of capitular plates. Five new species of Virgiscalpellum are also erected: V. mhrilensis sp. nov., V. multilineatum sp. nov., V. truncatum sp. nov., V. laevis sp. nov. and V. sussexiense sp. nov., as well as a new Proverruca, P. anglica. The Eoverrucidae fam. nov. is erected for the genus Eoverruca, for which two new species, E. aubensis (middle Albian, France) and E. symmetrica (upper Campanian, UK) are described. The record from the Albian takes the origin of the verrucomorph cirripedes back 25 million years. Furthermore, two new species of Brachylepas, B. thieli and B. hantonensis, extend the range of the genus down into the Cenomanian, and a new genus of brachylepadid, Fallaxlepas, is erected, with the type species Pollicipes fallax Darwin , 1851. The stratigraphical distribution of Cretaceous cirripede genera is tabulated and demonstrates a remarkable increase in diversity through the Albian to mid-Campanian, above which there is a minor decrease. The Cretaceous– Paleogene (K/Pg) boundary saw the extinction of 15 cirripede genera.

Sinopanorpa Cai & Hua, a new genus belonging to the family Panorpidae in Mecoptera, is established with Panorpa tincta Navas 1931 as its type species. A key to the four genera of Panorpidae is compiled to include the new genus. Two new species, Sinopanorpa digitiformis Huang & Hua and Sinopanorpa nangongshana Cai & Hua, are described and illustrated from the Oriental China. A key to the three species of the new genus is provided. Sinopanorpa tincta (Navas), a new combination transferred from the genus Panorpa Linnaeus, is re-described with a brief note on its biology.

Two new species of Cerambycidae are described from Costa Rica: Cosmisoma luteoviridis sp. nov. (Rhopalophorini) and Katerinaella costaricensis gen. nov. and sp. nov. (Rhinotragini). Trachyderes (Dendrobias) Dupont, 1834 is restored to genus level. Male specimens of Dendrobias steinhauseni (Hüdepohl, 1987) from Nicaragua and Costa Rica are described and illustrated. The relationship of D. steinhauseni with other Dendrobias species is discussed.

An ongoing review of Neotropical Xyleborini (Coleoptera, Curculionidae, Scolytinae) has revealed a new genus, Dinoxyleborus gen. nov. (type species Dinoxyleborus cognatoi sp. nov.), from South America. Two new species are described and one new combination is proposed: Dinoxyleborus cognatoi, sp. nov., D. infernus sp. nov., and D. sexnotatus (Schedl), 1970. A modification of Wood’s 2007 key to Neotropical Xyleborini genera and a key to Dinoxyleborus species are given.
