A new species of Pseudione sensu lato (Isopoda: Bopyridae) on a squat lobster host from the deep South-West Atlantic

A new bopyrid, Pseudione chiesai n. sp., is herein described based on an ovigerous female and an adult male found in the right branchial chamber on a specimen of Munida spinosa Henderson, 1885. This parasite was collected in the Mar del Plata submarine canyon at 819 m depth during the expedition “Talud Continental I” carried out by the Argentine RV Puerto Deseado in 2012. P. chiesai n. sp. belongs to the Pseudione “crénelés” group sensu Bourdon (1972, 1976), which currently contains seven species, all of which have galatheoid crabs as hosts. P. chiesai n. sp. can be separated from the other species in the Pseudione “crénelés” group by the following combination of characters: (1) both sides of the body convex, (2) frontal lamina with a few, shallow indentations, (3) coxal plates 1–4 and tergal projections 1–4 with distinct irregular margins, mainly on the right side, (4) pereomeres 5–7 with single/branched lateral digitations, (5) maxilliped palp well-developed and setose, and (6) pleon with lateral plates 1–5 distally rounded and directed laterally. The taxonomic position of this new species is briefly discussed.

A new species of the chirostylid squat lobster genus Uroptychodes Baba, 2004, U. fuscilineatus, is described and illustrated on the basis of a single ovigerous female from the Uraga Channel, central Japan, at depth of 250 m. The new species appears most similar to U. spinimarginatus (Henderson, 1885) and U. yapensis Dong, Gan & Li, 2021 among the 13 known congeners, but is notable in the pereopod 2 not being definitely more slender than the pereopods 3 and 4 and the remarkably spinose pereopods 1–4. A possible association of the new species with crinoid is suggested. An updated identification key to species of Uroptychodes is presented.

To date the genus Diploplastron comprised only one species of ophryoscolecid ciliate, Diploplastron affine, which is characterized by having two retractable ciliary zones in the anterior end of the body, two slender and juxtaposed skeletal plates on the right side, a rod shape macronucleus, and two contractile vacuoles. During study on the characterization of rumen ciliate community composition in Brazilian domestic sheep, we observed ciliates with atypical morphology but with diagnostic features of genus Diploplastron. This study describes Diploplastron dehorityi, a new species of ophryoscolecid ciliate, that differs from D. affine, primarily, in the morphology of skeletal plates, morphology of nuclear apparatus and body shape. In addition to the similarities between the new species and congener species, D. dehorityi has some morphological similarities to species of genus Eremoplastron.

Zoarcid fishes of the genus Gymnelus Reinhardt inhabit the shelves of the North Pacific Ocean and the Arctic. A new species, G. pseudosquamatus sp. nov., is described from trawl samples taken at depths off South-West Greenland. It is most similar to the type species of the genus, Common Fish Doctor G. viridis, inhabiting the coastal waters of Greenland. The characters of the latter are specified on materials from the type locality, including the neotype and specimens of J.C.H. Reinhardt. Both species are in the group of Gymnelus with an interrupted supratemporal commissura, two supratemporal sensory pores (1+0+1), and a dorsal fin originating above the pectoral fin. The two species differ in a complex of characters, including habitus. In G. viridis, the trunk is roundish in cross section, highest above the beginning of the anal fin; the anterior rays of the dorsal fin are shortened, and covered with a thick and somewhat fleshy skin. In G. pseudosquamatus, the body is compressed and deeper anteriorly, the dorsal-fin rays are evenly elongated, and the fin membrane is thin. Differences in counts and measurements are statistically significant, including the number of vertebrae and rays in the dorsal, anal and pectoral fins, the number of teeth on the jaws, as well as the length and depth of the head, predorsal length, the length of pectoral fins, eye diameter and length of the gill slit. The color of G. pseudosquamatus, with 8–16 wide brown mottled bands, is also unusual, as the skin is dotted with light speckles that create the illusion of tiny scales, which is the reason for the name “pseudosquamatus”, the Deceptive Fish Doctor. While G. viridis is found inshore in a zone of macroalgae, the new species is found in deeper waters (100–457 m) along the shelf edge of South-West Greenland. The name Ophidium stigma Lay et Bennett, 1839 (=Gymnelus stigma) should be excluded from the synonymy of G. viridis, since the original description mentions the presence of scales on the body, which are absent in Gymnelus.

In a collection of vertebrate remains from the south-west coast of Madagascar, recently received in the British Museum, there occur numerous bones belonging to, at least, three species of Æpyornis. Among them are two tibio-tarsi, right and left, of gigantic size, much larger than any hitherto described. Both these bones are, unfortunately, considerably damaged at the upper end, the right one alone showing any portion of the proximal articular surface. They both, without doubt, belong to the same species, though probably not to the same individual. The left, which on the whole, is the better preserved, may be taken as the type of the species which it is proposed to call Æpyornis titan.

A new species of Hisonotus from rio Juma, located at the right margin of the lower rio Aripuanã, rio Madeira basin is described. The new species is distinguished from its congeners mainly by a reddish-tipped premaxillary and dentary teeth, a V-shaped spinelet, three lateral plates in abdominal series, the coloration pattern of caudal fin with three transversal dark bars, and by morphometric characters.

A new species of Paguridae, Pagurus ikedai, from the Tokyo Submarine Canyon and vicinity, Japan, is described and fully illustrated, including information on live coloration. This new species is distinguished primarily by size and shape of the chelipeds, in particular the massiveness of the left, and the presence in some males of a papilla or very short sexual tube on the right coxa of the fifth pereopod and a papilla on the coxa of the left. It is assigned to the bernhardus group which now includes eight species.

A new species of Sphaerodoridae (Annelida: Polychaeta),Sphaerodoropsis solissp. nov., is described from the Challenger Plateau in the Tasman Sea, south-west Pacific. It is the third species of the genus with ventral macrotubercles and is further characterized by the lack of dorsal papillae and the specific arrangement pattern of ventral papillae. A character indicating sexual dimorphism, that has been observed in three morphologically similar species,S. arctowskyensisHartmann-Schröder & Rosenfeldt, 1988,S. bisphaeroserialis(Hartmann-Schröder, 1974c), andS. garciaalvareziMoreira, Cacabelos & Troncoso, 2004, is confirmed forS. solissp. nov. BesidesS. solissp. nov.,S. arctowskyensisandS. parva(Ehlers, 1913) are newly recorded from the Challenger Plateau and the East Campbell Plateau in the south-west Pacific. An updated key for the genusSphaerodoropsisis provided.

Summary A new species of entomopathogenic nematode, Steinernema borjomiense n. sp., was isolated from the body of the host insect, Oryctes nasicornis (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae), in Georgia, in the territory of Borjomi-Kharagauli. Morphological characters indicate that the new species is closely related to species of the feltiae-group. The infective juveniles are characterised by the following morphological characters: body length of 879 (777-989) μm, distance between the head and excretory pore = 72 (62-80) μm, pharynx length = 132 (122-142) μm, tail length = 70 (60-80) μm, ratio a = 26.3 (23.0-29.3), H% = 45 (40-51), D% = 54 (47-59), E% = 102 (95-115), and lateral fields consisting of seven ridges (eight incisures) at mid-body. Steinernema borjomiense n. sp. was molecularly characterised by sequencing three ribosomal regions (the ITS, the D2-D3 expansion domains and the 18S rRNA gene) and the mitochondrial COI gene. Phylogenetic analyses revealed that S. borjomiense n. sp. differs from all other known species of Steinernema and is a member of the monticolum-group.

Corydalis nanchuanensis (Papaveraceae), a new species from Nanchuan district in south-west Chongqing, China, is described and illustrated. Morphologically, the new species is similar to C. sheareri, a species mainly distributed in south China and Vietnam, in having conical corolla spurs, divided lower bracts, rounded stigmas, larger elaiosomes (usually longer than seeds), and tubers, but differs by having tapering-to-base (vs. uniformly sized) stems; entire (vs. usually crenate) leaf lobes, straight (vs. declined) pedicels in fruit, concave (vs. subacute) apices of outer petals, white (vs. usually purple) abaxial side of inner petals, and reticulate (vs. tuberculate) seeds.
