The 2010 special issue of Journal of Health and Social Behavior, titled “Fifty Years of Medical Sociology,” defined the contours of the medical sociological perspective. We use this as a backdrop to outline and assess the continued integration of genetics into medical sociology research. We contend that the explosion of genetic and epigenetic data in population health data sources has made the medical sociological perspective increasingly relevant to researchers outside of sociology, including public health, epidemiology, and quantitative genetics. We describe vast, underappreciated, and mostly unsolved challenges that limit the scientifically appropriate interest in incorporating genetics into existing paradigms. It is our hope that medical sociologists continue this integration but redouble efforts to maintain the core insights in social science research, such as the importance of environmental and structural (i.e., nonbiological) factors in determining health processes and outcomes and the use of rich, integrated, and rigorous empirical analyses.

AbstractWaste studies brings to labor history a suite of conceptual tools to think about precarious labor, human capital, migration, the material quality of labor in urban and rural infrastructures, and the porosity and interchangeability of workers’ bodies in the toxic environments in which they labor. In this introduction, we explore the conceptual insights that the study of waste offers for the field of labor history, and what, in turn, a focus on labor history affords to social science research on waste. We examine the relationship between surplus populations and surplus materials, the location of waste work at the ambiguous fulcrum of trash and value, and the significance of labor for the understanding of infrastructure.

Social media are becoming more popular as a source of data for social science researchers. These data are plentiful and offer the potential to answer new research questions at smaller geographies and for rarer subpopulations. When deciding whether to use data from social media, it is useful to learn as much as possible about the data and its source. Social media data have properties quite different from those with which many social scientists are used to working, so the assumptions often used to plan and manage a project may no longer hold. For example, social media data are so large that they may not be able to be processed on a single machine; they are in file formats with which many researchers are unfamiliar, and they require a level of data transformation and processing that has rarely been required when using more traditional data sources (e.g., survey data). Unfortunately, this type of information is often not obvious ahead of time as much of this knowledge is gained through word-of-mouth and experience. In this article, we attempt to document several challenges and opportunities encountered when working with Reddit, the self-proclaimed “front page of the Internet” and popular social media site. Specifically, we provide descriptive information about the Reddit site and its users, tips for using organic data from Reddit for social science research, some ideas for conducting a survey on Reddit, and lessons learned in merging survey responses with Reddit posts. While this article is specific to Reddit, researchers may also view it as a list of the type of information one may seek to acquire prior to conducting a project that uses any type of social media data.

BACKGROUND The standard Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) is widely used in health information technology. However, its use as a standard for health research is still less prevalent. To use existing data sources more efficiently for health research, data interoperability becomes increasingly important. FHIR provides solutions by offering resource domains such as “Public Health & Research” and “Evidence-Based Medicine” while using already established web technologies. Therefore, FHIR could help to standardize data across different data sources and improve interoperability in health research. OBJECTIVE The aim of our study was to provide a systematic review of existing literature and determine the current state of FHIR implementations in health research and possible future directions. METHODS We searched PubMed/Medline, EMBASE, Web of Science, IEEE Xplore and the Cochrane Library databases for studies published from 2010 to 2021. Studies investigating the use of FHIR in health research were included. Articles published before 2010, abstracts, reviews, editorials and expert opinions were excluded. We followed the PRISMA guidelines and registered this study with PROSPERO, CRD42021235393. Data synthesis was done in tables and figures. RESULTS We identified a total of 674 studies, of which 28 studies were eligible for inclusion. Most studies covered the domain of clinical research (22/28) while the remaining studies focused on public health/ epidemiology (3/28) or did not specify their research domain (3/28). Studies used FHIR for data capture (11/28), standardization of data (7/28), analysis (4/28), recruitment (4/28) and consent management (2/28). Most studies had a generic approach (15/28) and nine of 13 studies focusing on specific medical specialties (infectious disease, genomics, oncology, environmental health, imaging, pulmonary hypertension) reported their solutions to be conferrable to other use cases. Half of the studies reported using additional data models or terminologies: SNOMED CT (8/14), LOINC (8/14), ICD-10 (6/14), OMOP CDM (3/14) and others (9/14). Only one study used a FHIR resource from the domain “Public Health & Research”. Limitations using FHIR included the possible change in the content of FHIR resources, safety and legal matters and the need for a FHIR server. CONCLUSIONS Our review found that FHIR can be implemented in health research and that the areas of application are broad and generalizable in most use cases. Implementation of international terminologies was common and other standards such as OMOP CDM could be used complementary with FHIR. Limitations such as change of FHIR content, lack of FHIR implementation, safety and legal matters need to be addressed in future releases to expand the use of FHIR and therefore interoperability in health research.

The research was intended to describe the use of Simalungun taboo words across times in Simalungun (1930-2021). The language of Simalungun is spoken by people living outside the district of Simalungun, North of Sumatera and other people. This research was carried out in a multi-case descriptive qualitative design. Descriptual qualitative research design was defined as a social science research approach that emphasised the collection, use of inductive thinking and understanding of descriptive data in natural environments. While multi case is defined as a study which is using two or more subjects, settings, or depositories of data (Bogdan & Biklen, 1982). Documentation, interviews and observations of participants were used to collect data on linguistic taboos. The data sources were collected from 45 informants of different ages (1930-2021) and sexes who reside in Pematangsiantar, Pematangraya and Saribudolok. After having analyzed the collected data, the research finding showed that there were 62 words out of 106 the taboo words of ten categories: sexual organ, sexual activity, cursing, swearing, calling people, action, disease, dwelling ghost and name of God which were  used stably across time (from 1930 to 2021) in Simalungun are 62 words, out of 106 words.
