The performance of three formats in three choice sets was studied. In choice sets with negatively correlated attributes, the computer-assisted LINEAR format led to superior decisions in comparison with a computer-assisted CUTOFF format and a simple RAN DOM-order format. Decision quality, however, was high and the same across the formats in a choice set with non-negatively correlated attributes. The LINEAR format was highly regarded by subjects, resulted in timely decisions, and is recommended on the basis of its performance in the study.

Decisions are based on information. The decision maker naturally assumes that it reflects reality. Yet data, which is used to create information, is easily manipulated, and the context can be changed to influence knowledge derived from the situation. The use of deception is not new, but the advent of electronic information systems has made its potential more pervasive. This paper investigates the dilemma the information management function faces in ensuring the integrity of the data supplied, the information derived, and the knowledge created from their systems.

Linked record medical information systems generate cumulative person or family records from data on events or processes occurring to the individual at separate times and places. The special purposes of time-based and family statistics from these systems are exemplified by studies in health care, epidemiology and genetics. Methods of linking records on a large scale and some of the difficulties are described. The value and practicability of computer-assisted linked record systems are discussed in the light of experience with the Oxford Record Linkage Study and the northeast Scottish Psychiatric Case Register, both of which have been in existence for a decade.
