Media and mobility: Two fields, one subject

This article advocates greater collaboration between media studies and mobility studies. After exploring the ways that media can be immobile, mobile and ambient, it examines how each field has incorporated the other. The article then presents two US case studies, the portable radio and in-car media, to demonstrate that modern electronic media have long possessed a mobile capacity. This leads to a final discussion about the role of media in fostering relations between people and built environments with their varying degrees of mobility.

AbstractIn considering the articles in this Special Issue, I am struck by the importance of a set of factors that, in my view, both run through the articles like a leitmotif, as well as shape the major ‘take away’ lesson(s) from the articles. In this short commentary, I elaborate on these factors and the lesson(s) to take from them through five ‘Cs’: context; complexity; contestation; the framework of constitutions; and the role of comparative law. The first three ‘Cs’ are lessons from the case studies of the articles themselves, while the second two ‘Cs’ are offered as lessons to help take the dialogue forward. Fundamentally, these five ‘Cs’ highlight the importance of the articles in this Special Issue and the conference from which they emerged on the one hand, while on the other hand, also making us aware of what are the limits of what we should conclude from the individual articles. In other words, taken together, the five ‘Cs’ are, one might say, lessons about lessons.

With the rise of privatized automobility and the increase of traffic jams, new sociotechnical systems have emerged that aim at traffic control. Radio traffic information has been a key element in these systems. Through a qualitative analysis of historical radio broadcasts of the largest Dutch news station between 1960 and 2000, this article explores the changing format and content of traffic information updates. I will show how the rather formal, detailed, and paternalistic narratives of the traffic reports in the 1960s gave way to more informal, witty, yet flow-controlling traffic information discourse in later decades. I will explain the dynamics involved by drawing on mobility and media studies and by developing two distinct notions of flow, one of which builds conceptually on Raymond Williams’s work on mobile privatization, the other is grounded in the field of traffic management. In so doing, this article aims to contribute to a better understanding of the role of public radio broadcasts in our world of privatized automobility.

It is generally accepted that compositions in deconstructive architecture are irrational, fragmented, and do not follow proportional systems or principles of architecture, such as harmony, continuity, and unity. These compositions are understood as the result of compilations of random geometries that are often non-rectilinear, distorted, and displaced. In spite of this, deconstructive architecture is widely accepted and practiced in the last couple of decades. On the other hand, geometrical proportions have long been considered as a self-guided method of aesthetically proven designs. This paper examines the hypothesis that the golden rectangle as a proportional system is manifested, to a varying degree, in deconstructive architecture. Methodologically, the hypothesis was tested using two inter-related methods. First, Tension Points of three famous examples of deconstructivist architecture were identified using the Delphi method by a panel of experts. Second, a matrix of displaced golden rectangles was used to test the degree of correspondence between the tension points of the case studies and the golden rectangle. It was found that deconstructive architecture is not a type of “free-form” architecture; and that conventional proportional systems and aesthetics laws, such as the golden ratio, are partially manifested in its compositions and forms, thus confirming the hypothesis. This paper argues that since architects are trained to capture proportional systems and design according to certain organizational and proportional principles, this would inevitably be consciously or unconsciously reflected on their designs.

We propose a methodological strategy that addresses some of the widespread criticisms of survey research. Traditional survey research has, to a great extent, neglected the role of contested concepts in politics and respondents' subjectivity. Our mix of methods—including conceptual analysis, Q-methodology, and survey research—enables us to measure people's subjective understandings of contested concepts while allowing us to reap the benefits of survey research. In two case studies, one on patriotism and the other on participatory citizenship, we demonstrate that the mixed method more accu rately measures respondents' subjectivity and leads to greater predictive abil ity through more accurate measures.

<p><span lang="IN">This research is a study of the mediatization of the ḥadīth on Dajjāl (the anti-Christ) in the context of media culture. Mediatization of the ḥadīth through illustrations allows every Muslim to understand the stages and events that will occur at the </span><span>End of the Time</span><span> <span lang="IN">(<em>Ākhir al-Zamān</em>). Such ḥadīth is pre-actual doctrinal texts in Islam. This article uses the theory of mediatization that has a close link with the discipline of media studies and religiosity. </span></span><span>We</span><span lang="IN"> argue that the ḥadīth illus­tration as an expression of religious beliefs is a continuation of the massive use of technology in understanding religious doctrines. On the other hand, the illustration of the ḥadīth</span><span>.</span><span> <span lang="IN">Ḥadīth on the Dajjāl in digital media has formed a new pattern in the understanding of ḥadīth from abstract-imaginative to con</span></span><span>c</span><span lang="IN">rete-imaginative. The illustration of the Dajjāl has become an indication of the widespread role of the media in the spread of Islamic doctrines, and its changing role from being dominated by the texts to being dominated by the logic of religion. This research uses the theory of mediatization with the approach of media culture. The data is obtained from footage of such ḥadīth documentary airing on You</span><span>T</span><span lang="IN">ube accounts. These shows usually refer to preachers who are concerned with conveying the contents of the ḥadīth.</span></p>

In the last thirty years, ethnic museums have mushroomed in American cities. Although this is certainly a national phenomenon, it has been particularly evident in Los Angeles. In this paper we examine the genesis and evolution of these emerging institutions. We survey the mission, scope, and role of ethnic museums in Los Angeles, and we contrast them with the stated mission and scope of "mainstream" museums in the city. We further present case studies of three Los Angeles ethnic museums. The museums vary considerably in the ways they perceive their role in the community, the city, and the nation and in the preservation and display of ethnic culture. At their best, ethnic museums serve to make new art and histories more accessible and visible and provide a forum in which to debate contemporary issues of politics and identity. The paper highlights some of the tensions faced by ethnic museums as they seek to define their audience and role(s) in multi-ethnic, twenty-first century Los Angeles.

This study aimed is finding out if the new science of accounting role in handling corruption cases plaguing Indonesia. There are two suspects in this case are Djoko Susilo and Didik Purnomo. The data collecting was done through electronic media, mass media and website. This research is a form of case studies which has the main question ifthere is any role of forensic audit science in corruption case handling of equipment procurement of driving license simulator (SIM)or not. The analysis shows that the science of forensic audit is able to assist the government in dealing with cases of corruption in Indonesia.

Television & New Media commemorates its 20th year anniversary with this diverse collection of short reflection pieces on the “intellectual and institutional turbulence” facing media studies and the ways our colleagues have taken up these challenges in their work. Our introduction to the anniversary issue specifically addresses the role of media and media studies in the COVID-19 pandemic moment. On the one hand, our discipline has the opportunity to reinforce and reflect on its long-held arguments as we see how the pandemic reveals key insights of the field with uncanny clarity. On the other hand, for some, there is the nagging sensation we will have to do more and better if we are to adequately account for all the features of the current crisis.

The United Nations remains the primary agency for carrying out peace operations. This article situates the Diehl and Druckman framework and the preceding four case studies in the larger context of the origins and changing nature and requirements of peacekeeping. Consideration is given to the shift from collective security to peacekeeping as the predominant strategy for UN conflict management efforts; peacekeeping itself has evolved in both number and mission over time. Complementary frameworks and ideas drawn from the other scholars’ work and case study chapters herein are discussed in the concluding section.

Disability Media Studies proposes the formation of a field of study, based in the rich traditions of media, cultural, and disability studies. Such a field is necessarily interdisciplinary and diverse, arising from cross-pollinating conversations and engagements. Thus, this collection offers fourteen chapters written by scholars located in a variety of disciplinary homes, all exploring media artifacts in light of disability. Additionally, two afterwords—by Rachel Adams, and Mara Mills and Jonathan Sterne—reflect upon the collection, the ongoing conversations, and the future of disability media studies. This book is intended to be accessible, teachable, and friendly to newcomers to the study of disability and media alike. Case studies include familiar contemporary examples—such as the blockbuster film Iron Man 3 (2013), Lady Gaga, and Oscar Pistorius—as well as historical media, independent disability media, reality television, and media technologies. Chapters consider disability representation, the role of media in forming cultural assumptions about ability, the construction of disability via media technologies, and how disabled audiences respond to particular media artifacts. Each chapter is preceded by a short abstract, orienting the reader by explaining the background and contribution of the essay.
