The fundus reflexes reveal, in a manner not yet completely understood, the texture and contour of the reflecting surfaces and the condition of the underlying tissues. In this way they may play an important part in the biomicroscopy of the eye. The physiological reflexes are seen at their best in the eyes of young subjects, in well-pigmented eyes, with undilated pupils and with emmetropic refraction. Their absence during the first two decades, or their presence after the forties, their occurrence in one eye only, their appearance, disappearance or change of character should suggest the possibility of some pathological state. The investigation and interpretation of the reflexes are notably assisted by comparing the appearances seen with long and short wave lights such as those of the sodium and mercury vapour lamps, in addition to the usual ophthalmoscopic lights. Most of the surface reflexes disappear in the light of the sodium lamp, sometimes revealing important changes in the deeper layers of the retina and choroid. The physiological reflexes, chiefly formed on the surface of the internal limiting membrane, take the forms of the familiar watered silk or patchy reflexes, the peri-macular halo, the fan reflex in the macular depression and the reflex from the foveal pit. The watered silk or patchy reflexes often show a delicate striation which follows the pattern of the nerve-fibre layer, or there may be a granular or criss-cross texture. Reflexes which entirely lack these indications of “texture” should be considered as possibly pathological. This applies to the “beaten metal” reflexes and to those formed on the so-called hyaloid membrane. The occurrence of physiological reflexes in linear form is doubtful, and the only admittedly physiological punctate reflexes are the so-called Gunn's dots. Surface reflexes which are broken up into small points or flakes are pathological, and are most frequently seen in the central area of the fundus in cases of pigmentary degeneration of the retina or after the subsidence of severe retinitis or retino-choroiditis. A mirror reflex from the layer of pigmented epithelium or from the external limiting membrane is sometimes recognizable in normal eyes, especially in the brunette fundus. In such, it forms the background to a striking picture of the fine circumfoveal vessels. Pathological reflexes from the level of the pigmented epithelium or of the external limiting membrane are also observed, and these often present a granular, frosted or crystalline appearance. They may indicate a senile change, or result from trauma or from retino-choroidal degeneraion. Somewhat similar reflexes may sometimes be present as small frosted patches anterior to the retinal vessels. Linear sinuous, whether appearing in annular form, as straight needles, as broader single sinuous lines, as the tapering, branched double reflexes of Vogt, or in association with traction or pressure folds, in the retina, are probably always pathological. By the use of selected light of long and short wave lengths, it can be shown that intraretinal or true retinal folds may exist with or without the surface reflexes which indicate a corresponding folding of the internal limiting membrane. On the other hand, superficial linear reflexes of various types may occur without evidence of retinal folding. Annular reflexes usually accompany a rounded elevation of the retina due to tumour, hæmorrhage or exudate, but may indicate the presence of rounded depressions; traction folds occur where there is choroido-retinal scarring, or in association with macular hole or cystic degeneraion at the macula; pressure folds in cases of orbital cyst, abscess or neoplasm; and the other linear reflexes in association with papillo-retinal œdema, for example, in retrobulbar neuritis, in hypertensive neuro-retinitis, in contusio bulbi and in anterior uveitis. Punctate reflexes, other than Gunn's dots, are also pathological. They may occur as one variety of “fragmented” surface reflexes, or as evidence of the presence of some highly refractile substance, such as cholesterin or calcium carbonate, in a retinal exudate or other lesion. It is characteristic of the pathological reflexes that they come and go and change their character according to the progress of the pathological condition. The linear reflexes in particular may change from one from to another, and may be finally transformed into surface reflexes of physiological character.

In this article, I unravel the use of tuberculosis as a metaphor in Ritwik Ghatak's Meghe Dhaka Tara (The Cloud-Capped Star), and locate it within the indices of loss Ghatak uses in the film to designate the tragic and brutal partition of the Bengal Presidency in 1947. Nita’s illness – which was both her tragedy and salvation – had to be a careful selection; it had to be semiotically proximate to the other meanings and metaphors imputed to Nita. To establish the salience of the use of tuberculosis, I underscore the link between the perception of tuberculosis and the ‘being’ of the protagonist (Nita) it sublimates. I further demonstrate that tuberculosis is the most apt disease, because the metaphors that the disease has been imbued with assimilate into the larger symbolic register that Ghatak uses in the film. I posit that Nita – ‘also’, and perhaps more acutely – suffers from the imperatives of tuberculosis – the characteristics associated with the disease in the popular imagination – rather than the mere pathological condition caused by the pathogen, mycobacterium tuberculosis.

A new Tardigrada species, Claxtonia goni sp. nov. is described from specimens collected in the central area of the Haleakalā National Park, the island of Maui, Hawaii, U.S.A. The new species and Clx. pardalis (Degma & Schill, 2015) together with several examples of Clx. wendti (Richters, 1903) are the only known Claxtonia species with the plates having an intracuticular pattern resembling that on a leopard’s fur. Claxtonia goni sp. nov. differs from Clx. pardalis in the absence of pores on leg plates, in smaller and uniform pores on dorso-lateral plates, in very unequally spaced teeth in the dentate collar, in lesser ratio of internal cephalic cirrus and lateral cirrus A lengths, and in relatively shorter claws in fourth pair of legs. The differences between the new species and the other congeners as well as Echiniscus species with the same cirri composition and similar cuticular sculpture are also defined. The diagnosis of the genus Claxtonia is amended and three Echiniscus species are transferred into the genus with the proposed new combinations: Claxtonia aliquantilla (Grigarick, Schuster & Nelson, 1983) comb. nov., Clx. mosaica (Grigarick, Schuster & Nelson, 1983) comb. nov. and Clx. nigripustula (Horning, Schuster & Grigarick, 1978) comb. nov..

Four different combinations of light-traps and bulbs were tested during the summer 1996 in Kainuu, northern Finland: a Jalas model with a 160-W (J/160W) blended light lamp or a 125-W (J/125W) mercury vapour lamp, a Ryrholm trap with a 125-W (R/125W) mercury vapour lamp and a Rothamsted trap with a 200-W tungsten lamp (G/200W). The traps were rotated between four sites every night, but were kept in the same position for the fifth night in order to prevent the possible influence of moonlight. The longest distance between the traps was 150m, and there was no direct visibility between any of them. Three orders were inspected, i.e. Lepidoptera, Coleoptera and Hemiptera, the total numbers of individuals and species being as follows: 20857/425, 862/101 and 1868/58. G/200W collected significantly fewer moths than the other traps. In some cases, J/125W collected significantly more moths and less species than the J/160W design. The R/125W design collected significantly more species than the J/160W design. Similar differences in the effectiveness of the lamps and traps were found in the case of Coleoptera and Hemiptera. Alpha diversities showed the same trend.

Abstract At the eastern border of the Carolingian Empire two different groups of elite emerged. When referred to, the individuals in one of the groups were called either by personal names, or by the name of the area they governed; individuals in the other group were called by the name of their people. Members of the first group administered the territorial units of the central area of the former Avar Khaganate just like the Carolingian chief officials and royal vassals in the interior of the Empire. The members of the second group were (indirect) allies of the Avars and had their own tribal prince and gentile nobles. The administrative centres of the Carolingian province Pannoniae developed in synchrony with the inner centres of the Empire, while the centres of power outside the Empire had their own special settlement structures showing a conglomerate of the courts of the tribal nobility.

Description of five new Dolichopoda species from the Ionian area of Western Greece together with a description of the female for D. pavesii from Kefalonia island and the male of D. dalensi from North-eastern Peloponnisos are reported. Considering the other 6 species already documented in the area (including the North of the Peloponnisos), there is now a total of 11 recorded species of Dolichopoda which currently inhabit the underground areas of this zone. These new data, therefore, help better define the already high diversity of the genus in the Hellenic region (25 species in all) reinforcing the hypothesis that there was a central area of dispersion of the Dolichopoda in the ancient Aegean plate.


It was observed originally by Stark that a stream of mercury vapour allowed to distil away from the arc or glow discharge in vacuo remains luminous. It may be said to carry the luminosity away with it, and in the case of the arc discharge there is no difficulty in detecting the luminosity for 50 cm. or so from the source. Stark found that when a glow discharge was used, which developed the continuous band spectrum, this spectrum could be detected in the distilled vapour, along with the line spectrum. When the glow was passed through an electric field, the line spectrum was found to be quenched, leaving the band spectrum unaffected. The arc discharge, on the other hand, gave only the line spectrum in his experiments.

The source of light used as a background is an important factor in determining the convenience and accuracy of ultra-violet absorption work, etc. If a source of light of constant intensity is available, a direct comparison method can be used and it is only necessary to calibrate the plates. If the source of light is not constant in intensity, it is necessary to divide the light into two beams and use one to check the variations of intensity while the other goes through the absorbing substance or (during calibration) the reducing sector or wedge. This latter method requires much more complicated apparatus and if the variations in the source are at all large it becomes inaccurate. In addition to being constant in intensity a good background for ultra-violet absorption spectra should possess the following qualities:(1) Most of the energy should be emitted in the form of a continuous spectrum.(2) It is desirable to be able to use one photograph of the whole region to be investigated. For this purpose it is necessary that the variations of intensity in different parts of the spectrum should be small enough for it to be possible to arrange the exposure so that all parts of the spectrum are within the correct exposure range, i.e. it must not be necessary to over-expose any part in order to get a strong enough intensity at another wave-length.The hydrogen continuous spectrum possesses both these qualities and is an excellent background for the region on the short wave-length side of 3200 A.U. It may be used for longer wavelengths, but the hydrogen secondary lines are apt to prove trouble-some unless a fairly large dispersion is used.


In 1909 Messrs. J. Herbert Parsons and E. E. Henderson commenced some experiments on the action of short wave-length light on the lens and ciliary body, using Uviol glass mercury-vapour tubes and examining the lens and its capsule after exposure. To test for damage to the ciliary body too slight to be appreciable microscopically use was made of an observation of Römer’s, that in animals sensitised to the blood of another species, htemolysins were not transmitted from the blood to the aqueous unless the constitution of the latter were altered by a previous paracentesis or an inflammatory lesion of the iris and ciliary body. Positive results were obtained, but the experiments were not sufficiently extensive to be conclusive. I have, therefore, on behalf of the Committee of the Royal Society on Glassworkers’ Cataract, repeated and extended the experiments along lines suggested by Mr. Parsons. In the attempt to determine the effect of rays of various wave-lengths on the media of the eye, attention has been paid to three possible aetiological factors:—(1) The intensity of the light. (2) The part of the spectrum mainly represented in the source of light. (3) The possibility of the inclusion of electrolytic and mechanical as well as of radiant energy.

From a study of the organisms themselves, so far as this has been possible, and from an analysis of all accessible records relating to them, I conclude that there are four distinct species of coccidia which may parasitize man. These are: (1) Isospora hominis Rivolta, 1878 (emend.), discovered by Kjellberg in 1860. and recently investigated by Wenyon; (2) Eimeria wenyoni n.sp., a form discovered in 1915 by Wenyon; (3) Eimeria oxyspora n.sp., another new form, here described for the first time; (4) an undetermined species of Eimeria (?) which was discovered by Gubler in 1858. This last inhabits the human liver, whilst the three others probably live in the small intestine. Probably some seventy cases of infection with the Isospora have now been seen, mostly in persons who have been in the Near East; but the other parasites appear to be extremely rare, and little is known concerning their probable geographical distribution.All these parasites are probably peculiar to man. There is no evidence that any of them is or can be parasitic in any other host. The prevailing belief that the coccidia of man are identical with those of rabbits, cats, or dogs, is therefore unfounded. Furthermore, there is as yet no good evidence to show that man may harbour any species of coccidia other than the four just enumerated. All these forms, however, require fuller investigation. They are here briefly and incompletely described from the data at present available.There is at present no proof that the coccidia of man—with the probable exception of the species occurring in the liver—can produce a clinically recognizable pathological condition of “coccidiosis”: and as yet no method of treatment which will eradicate an infection with any species has been discovered.

Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser (MRKH) syndrome is a pathological condition characterized by primary amenorrhea and infertility and by congenital aplasia of the uterus and of the upper vagina. The development of secondary sexual characters is normal as well as that the karyotype (46,XX). Etiologically, this syndrome may be caused by the lack of development of the Müllerian ducts between the fifth and the sixth weeks of gestation. To explain this condition, it has been suggested that in patients with MRKH syndrome, there is a very strong hyperincretion of Müllerian-inhibiting factor (MIF), which would provoke the lack of development of the Müllerian ducts from primitive structures (as what normally occurs in male phenotype). These alterations are commonly associated with renal agenesis or ectopia. Specific mutations of several genes such as WT1, PAX2, HOXA7-HOXA13, PBX1, and WNT4 involved in the earliest stages of embryonic development could play a key role in the etiopathogenesis of this syndrome. Besides, it seems that the other two genes, TCF2 (HNF1B) and LHX1, are involved in the determinism of this pathology. Currently, the most widely nonsurgical used techniques include the “Frank’s dilators method,” while the surgical ones most commonly used are those developed by McIndoe, Williams, Vecchietti, Davydov, and Baldwin.
