Tensiomyography measures the radial displacement of a muscle during an electrically evoked twitch contraction. The rate of muscle displacement is increasingly reported to assess contractile properties. Several formulas currently exist to calculate the rate of displacement during the contraction phase of the maximal twitch response. However, information on the reproducibility of these formulas is scarce. Further, different rest intervals ranging from 10 s to 30 s are applied between consecutive stimuli during progressive electrical stimulation until the maximum twitch response. The effect of different rest intervals on the rate of displacement has not been investigated so far. The first aim of this study is to investigate the within and between-day reliability of the most frequently used formulas to calculate the rate of displacement. The second aim is to investigate the effect of changing the inter-stimulus interval on the rate of displacement. We will determine the rectus femoris and biceps femoris rate of displacement of twenty-four healthy subjects’ dominant leg on two consecutive days. The maximum displacement curve will be determined two times within three minutes on the first day and a third time 24 h later. On day two, we will also apply three blocks of ten consecutive stimuli at a constant intensity of 50 mA. Inter-stimuli intervals will be 10 s, 20 s or 30 s in each block, respectively, and three minutes between blocks. The order of inter-stimulus intervals will be randomized. This study will allow a direct comparison between the five most frequently used formulas to calculate the rate of displacement in terms of their reproducibility. Our data will also inform on the effect of different inter-stimulus intervals on the rate of displacement. These results will provide helpful information on methodical considerations to determine the rate of displacement and may thus contribute to a standardized approach.

Minimum toe clearance (MTC) is an important indicator of the risk of tripping. Aging and neuromuscular diseases often decrease MTC height and increase its variability, leading to a higher risk of tripping. Previous studies have developed visual feedback-based gait training systems to modify MTC. However, these systems are bulky and expensive, and the effects of the training continue only for a short time. We paid attention to the efficacy of vibration in decreasing the variability of gait parameters, and hypothesized that proper vibration applied to soles can reduce the MTC variability. Using shoes embedded with active vibrating insoles, we assessed the efficacy of both sub- and supra-threshold vibration in affecting MTC distribution. Experiment results with 17 young and healthy adults showed that vibration applied throughout the walking task with constant intensity of 130% of sensory threshold significantly decreased MTC variability, whereas sub-threshold vibration yielded no significant effect. These results demonstrate that a properly designed tactile sensory input which is controlled and delivered by a simple wearable device, the active insole, can reduce the MTC variability during walking.

PurposeThe objective of the article is to determine the numerical increase in publications on green libraries and the dynamics of its development as well as to determine the thematic structure of the scientific literature in the field of green libraries and its changes as a representation of research in this area.Design/methodology/approachThe research material consisted of publications on green libraries published between 1991 and 2020, indexed in the Web of Science database. The bibliometric method was used to determine the numerical increase in publications on green libraries and the dynamics of its development. In order to characterize the thematic structure of publications representing research in this area, content analysis was performed.FindingsQuantitative analysis of the literature on green libraries has shown that this is a new area of research not explored with constant intensity. The time of publishing materials on green libraries can be divided into two periods: the so-called period of first publications between 1991 and 2006, and the period between 2007 and 2020, when the number of publications increased relatively systematically. The content analysis confirmed the hypothesis that the most frequent theme is the issue of a green building and its management. It showed that the period after 2010 is the time of building a theoretical framework for a new research field, i.e. green libraries.Originality/valueThe main value of the article is the performance of a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the scientific literature indexed in the Web of Science devoted to green libraries, from the moment of the first publications to the present day. The codebook developed for the needs of content analysis can constitute the basis for the development of criteria for the evaluation of green libraries and guidelines for their organization.

Estimating the heart rate (HR) response to exercises of a given intensity without the need of direct measurement is an open problem of great interest. We propose here a model that can estimate the heart rate response to exercise of constant intensity and its subsequent recovery, based on soft computing techniques. Multilayer perceptron artificial neural networks (NN) are implemented and trained using raw HR time series data. Our model’s input and output are the beat-to-beat time intervals and the HR values, respectively. The numerical results are very encouraging, as they indicate a mean relative square error of the estimated HR values of the order of 10−4 and an absolute error as low as 1.19 beats per minute, on average. Our model has also been proven to be superior when compared with existing mathematical models that predict HR values by numerical simulation. Our study concludes that our NN model can efficiently predict the HR response to any constant exercise intensity, a fact that can have many important applications, not only in the area of medicine and cardio-vascular health, but also in the areas of rehabilitation, general fitness, and competitive sport.

Abstract Aims The demand on surgical services is increasing. In our Trust, all surgical referrals and queries are directed through the Senior House Officer (SHO) on-call. This leads to inefficiency, with many hours spent on the telephone and away from clinical duties. Such constant intensity can cause increased stress and anxiety amongst those involved. Junior doctor burnout and stress-related sickness are increasing concerns amongst the current surgical workforce. In an attempt to alleviate these factors, we instigated an intervention to evenly distribute workload during surgical on-calls. Method The number of bleeps through the surgical SHO on-call were audited for four consecutive thirteen hour shifts. Each call was estimated to take an average of five minutes to resolve. A separate GP referral phone was introduced to reduce the volume of traffic through the SHO bleep. The number of calls through the SHO and referral phone were re-audited following this intervention. Results Before introduction of a referral phone, the mean length of time spent by the SHO per shift answering calls was 232.5 minutes, with a maximum of 330 minutes. Post intervention, the SHO spent an average of 92.5 minutes per shift answering calls and referrals through the GP phone averaged 43.75 minutes. Conclusion The introduction of a single point GP referral system has significantly reduced the volume of calls through the SHO, thus has also minimised time spent away from on-call duties. Not only does this improve efficiency within the on-call team, but also reduces risk of burnout amongst trainees.

Practicing physical activity in a hot and humid climate (HHC) is becoming increasingly common due to anthropogenic climate change and the growing number of international sports events held in warm countries. The aim of this study was to understand the physiological and psychological effects of breathing two air temperatures during cycling exercise in HHC. Ten male athletes performed two sessions of exercise in HHC (T°: 32.0 ± 0.5 °C, relative humidity: 78.6 ± 0.7%) during which they breathed hot air (HA, 33.2 ± 0.06 °C) or temperate air (TA, 22.6 ± 0.1 °C). Each session was composed of 30 min of pre-fatigue cycling at constant intensity, followed by a 10 min self-regulated performance. During pre-fatigue, TA induced a better feeling score and a lower rating of perceived effort (respectively, +0.9 ± 0.2, p < 0.05; 1.13 ± 0.21; p < 0.05) with no changes in physiological parameters. During performance, oxygen consumption and mechanical workload were increased by TA (respectively, +0.23 ± 0.1 L min−1, p < 0.05 and +19.2 ± 6.1 W, p < 0.01), whereas no significant differences were observed for psychological parameters. Reducing the breathed air temperature decreased the discomfort induced by HHC during exercise and increased the performance capacity during self-regulated exercise. Thus, breathed air temperature perception is linked to the hardship of training sessions and directly contributes to the performance decrease in HHC.

This study aims to identify the effect of listening to the Holy Qur’an on some psychological and physical variables among practitioners of yoga exercises among Al Ain University students. Where the study population consisted of male and female students of the Physical Health course in the first semester of the academic year 2020/2021, and the study sample was chosen by the deliberate method as it consisted of (80) students from the original study community, and in one experimental group to achieve the study objectives and its questions, where psychological measurements (mood, focusing attention) were performed during the practice of yoga exercises before and after listening to the Holy Qur’an and after performing a constant intensity (below the maximum) for the sample members, and the physical variables (heart rate ,muscle relaxation and flexibility) for all members of the study sample before and after listening to the Qur’an, the pulse was also measured, as the experiment was repeated a week after with listening to the Qur’an while performing yoga exercises, where the researchers used a headset connected to a personal phone and a smartwatch to calculate the intensity of the pulse individually for each player to listen to the Holy Qur’an. After collecting the data and using the necessary statistical treatments, the results of the study showed a clear improvement in the psychological and physical variables of the study sample during listening to the Holy Quran, and in light of the results, the researchers recommended that they prefer the use of listening to the Holy Qur’an while practicing yoga exercises, and in training sessions, especially curative ones, as well as conducting similar studies for players who show signs of anxiety before competition and after training for the purpose of recovery and calming down, and applying the study to different categories of athletes and in some sports.   Received: 4 March 2021 / Accepted: 6 May 2021 / Published: 8 July 2021
