Ultraviolet (UV)-protective textiles have attracted significant attention because of their wide applicability. However, the anti-UV coatings of such textiles have an adverse effect on their wearing comfort, and other properties related to luster, softness and handle were also ignored. In this study, TiO2-coated silk fabric with controllable UV-protection properties was successfully fabricated via atomic layer deposition (ALD). The luster, bending properties, crease recovery, mechanical properties, air permeability and anti-UV properties of the TiO2-coated silk fabric were investigated. The results showed that the thickness, whiteness, bendability, tensile strength and anti-UV properties of the silk fabric increased progressively while its air permeability, wet crease recovery angle and dry crease recovery angle decreased with an increase in the thickness of the TiO2 coating. However, the coating did not have a negative effect on the usability of the fabric. Thus, the proposed ALD method is a promising one for modifying the surfaces of elastic textile materials in order to accord them with UV-protection properties.

The high polarity of water molecules inevitably causes the decomposition of perovskites. We retard the degradation by introducing an ultrathin ALD–Al2O3layer, which has almost no negative effect on performance.

In the present study, natural dye from cob of purple corn and various metallic salts have been used to identify the proper dyeing condition for attaining high quality natural dyeing along with imparting UV protection property to the dyed silk fabric. Silk fabrics dyed with cob of purple corn extract showed a violetish-pink shade, while those dyed with alum light violetish-pink shade colour. Silk substrates dyed with CuSO4 and FeSO4 gave a yellowish grey and violetish-gray colour, respectively. The fastness properties ranged from fair to good. The ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) values of silk fabric dyed with and without metal mordants ranged between very good and excellent.

In the present study, natural dye from lac dye and various metallic salts have been used to identify the proper dyeing condition for attaining high quality natural dyeing along with imparting UV protection property to the dyed silk fabric. Silk fabrics dyed with lac extract showed a light pink shade, while those dyed with alum and stannous chloride pinkish-red colour. Silk substrates dyed with CuSO4gave a purple red colour, while those dyed with FeSO4had a reddish-gray colour. The fastness properties ranged from fair to good, while washing fastness was poor level. The ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) values of silk fabric dyed with and without metal mordants ranged between very good and excellent for the silk fabric.

Attempted preparation of a chelated Co(II) β-silylamide re-sulted in the unprecedented disproportionation to Co(0) and a spirocyclic cobalt(IV) bis(β-silyldiamide): [Co[(NtBu)2SiMe2]2] (1). Compound 1 exhibits a room temperature magnetic moment of 1.8 B.M and a solid state axial EPR spectrum diagnostic of a rare S = 1/2 configuration. Semicanonical coupled-cluster calculations (DLPNO-CCSD(T)) revealed the doublet state was clearly preferred (–27 kcal/mol) over higher spin configurations for which density functional theory (DFT) showed no energetic preference. Unlike other Co(IV) complexes, 1 had remarkable thermal stability, and was demonstrated to form a stable self-limiting monolayer in initial atomic layer deposition (ALD) surface saturation tests. The ease of synthesis and high-stability make 1 an attractive starting point to begin investigating otherwise inaccessible Co(IV) intermediates and synthesizing new materials.
