Daytime energy balance at the surface in cloudy tropical conditions for Ile-Ife; Nigeria (7°33'N, 4°34'E) is investigated based on a series of micrometeorological measurements performed in October/November of 1998. For the humid environment that it is (mixing ratio, 17 -25 g / kg), magnitudes of the latent heat flux were much larger than the values for the sensible heat. Of the morning hours the average value for the Bowen ratio obtained was 0.36, while for the afternoons it was 0.74. As the soil surface became dried up in the afternoons, magnitudes of both sensible heat and ground heat fluxes were found to be comparable.   Fluctuations in the magnitudes of the terms of the surface energy balance correlated well to the cloud amount, degree of soil wetness, air temperature and humidity. But of all these factors, the variation in the amount of cloudiness appeared most dominant.

Despite having been used for ages to preserve wood against several effects (biological attack and moisture effects) that cause its degradation, the effect of vegetable oils on the cedar wood physicochemical properties is poorly known. Thus, in this study, the hydrophobicity, electron-acceptor (γ+), and electron-donor (γ−) properties of cedar wood before and after treatment with vegetable oils have been determined using contact angle measurement. The cedar wood has kept its hydrophobic character after treatment with the different vegetable oils. It has become more hydrophobic quantitatively with values of surface energy ranged from −25.84 to −43.45 mJ/m2 and more electron donors compared to the untreated sample. Moreover, the adhesion of four fungal strains (Penicillium commune (PDLd”), Thielavia hyalocarpa, Penicillium commune (PDLd10), and Aspergillus niger) on untreated and treated cedar wood was examined theoretically and experimentally. For untreated wood, the experimental adhesion showed a positive relationship with the results obtained by the extended Derjaguin–Landau–Verwey–Overbeek (XDLVO) approach which found that all fungal strains could adhere strongly to the cedar wood material. In contrast, this relationship was not always positive after treatment. The Environmental Scanning Electron Microscopy (ESEM) has shown that P. commune (PDLd10) and A. niger were found unable to adhere to the wood surface after treatment with sunflower and rapeseed oils. In addition, the results showed that the four fungal strains’ adhesion was decreased with olive and linseed oils treatment except that of P. commune (PDLd10) treated with linseed oil.

Background: Phospholipids adsorbed to negatively-charged proteoglycan matrix form phospholipid (membrane), have negatively charged surface (-PO4-) and are hydrophilic. Strong adsorption and strong cohesion are necessary for phospholipids to provide a good lubricant. The surface energy of spherical lipid bilayers have "bell-curve" shaped has amphoteric character and lowest surface energy at a pH 7.4 ± 1 of the natural joint. Objectives: The amphoteric character of the natural surface of the articular cartilage was determined by measuring the surface energy of the model spherical bilayer lipid membrane. It was found that the friction (f) vs. pH 2.0 to 9.0 of the pair (cartilage/cartilage) has the amphoteric character by exposing "bell-curve" shaped with an isoelectric point (IEP). Methods: The friction coefficient (f) was measured with the sliding pin-on-disc tribotester the friction between two surfaces (cartilage/cartilage) pair. The method of interfacial tension measurements of the spherical lipid bilayer model vs the pH over the range 0.2 to 9.0 was used. Results: The dependence of friction coefficient between two cartilage surfaces on the pH over the range 2.0 to 9.0 is demonstrated by a “bell - curve” in Fig. 2(A). The surface energy of a model spherical bilayer lipid membrane vs. the pH has the character of a “bell - curve” with an (IEP) is shown in Fig. 2(B). Conclusion: The amphoteric effect on friction between the bovine cartilage/cartilage contacts has been found to be highly sensitive to the pH of an aqueous solution. In this paper we demonstrate experimentally that the pH sensitivity of cartilage to friction provides a novel concept in joint lubrication on charged surfaces. The change in friction was consistently related to the change of charge density of an amphoteric surface.

The present work is devoted to the phenomenon of induced side branching stemming from the disruption of free dendrite growth. We postulate that the secondary branching instability can be triggered by the departure of the morphology of the dendrite from its steady state shape. Thence, the instability results from the thermodynamic trade-off between non monotonic variations of interface temperature, surface energy, kinetic anisotropy and interface velocity within the Gibbs–Thomson equation. For the purposes of illustration, the toy model of capillary anisotropy modulation is prospected both analytically and numerically by means of phase-field simulations. It is evidenced that side branching can befall both smooth and faceted dendrites, at a normal angle from the front tip which is specific to the nature of the capillary anisotropy shift applied. This article is part of the theme issue ‘Transport phenomena in complex systems (part 2)’.

Super-hydrophobic surfaces (SHS) usually are formed from a combination of low surface energy materials and micro/nanostructures via two-step approaches, and they have promising applications in material corrosion protection.
