While some read Mt. 13.44-46 as making the same point about the kingdom of heaven twice over, this article instead uses verbal markedness theory to suggest use of the perfect tense-form within Treasure in the Field (TIF) and Pearl of Great Price (PGP) indicates otherwise. Whereas TIF foregrounds the kingdom’s ‘hiddenness’ with κεκρυμμένῳ, PGP instead uses πέπρακεν to emphasize the toll its purchase exacts on investors. Hence, one might accurately describe the parables on the basis of verbal markedness theory, and their redactional similarities, as a set of fraternal twins the First Gospel conjoins within the parables discourse. While their individual points remain distinct, Matthew binds the implications of TIF and PGP together to suggest their mutual entailment. For those fortunate enough to uncover the hidden kingdom’s location, its entrance will cost them everything and so alter their lives forever. All experience difficulty obtaining the kingdom, and its discovery remains tentative even for those in the right line of work.

Introduction: Septic patients undergoing mechanical ventilation (MV) often experience difficulty in weaning. Th aim of this study was to determine whether inflammatory biomarkers of sepsis could be indicative of the failure or success of spontaneous breathing trial (SBT) in these patients. Methods: Sixty-five patients on MV (42 septic and 23 intubated for other reasons) fulfilling the criteria for SBT were included in the study. Blood samples were collected right before, at the end of (30 min) and 24 h after the SBT. Serum inflammatory mediators associated with sepsis (IL-18, IL-18BP, TNF) were determined and correlated with the outcome of SBT. Results: A successful SBT was achieved in 45 patients (69.2%). Septic patients had a higher percentage of SBT failure as compared to non-septic patients (85% vs. 15%, p = 0.026), with an odds ratio for failing 4.5 times (OR = 4.5 95%CI: 1.16–17.68, p 0.022). IL-18 levels and the relative mRNA expression in serum were significantly higher in septic as compared to non-septic patients (p < 0.05). Sepsis was independently associated with higher serum IL-18 and TNF levels in two time-point GEE models (53–723, p = 0.023 and 0.3–64, p = 0.048, respectively). IL-18BP displayed independent negative association with rapid shallow breathing index (RSBI) (95% CI: −17.6 to −4, p = 0.002). Conclusion: Sustained increased levels of IL-18 and IL-18BP, acknowledged markers of sepsis, were found to be indicative of SBT failure in patients recovering from sepsis. Our results show that, although subclinical, remaining septic inflammation that sustaines for a long time complicates the weaning procedure. Biomarkers for the estimation of the septic burden and the right time for weaning are needed.

In the myth of the Phaedrus Plato sets forth a picture of the life of discarnate souls in heaven. He represents these souls by the symbol of a winged charioteer driving winged horses. In the case of the souls of the gods (theoi), the charioteers and horses are good (246 a ). In the case of the other souls whom Plato calls daimones, and among whom our own souls are included, the soul is represented by a charioteer with two horses of which the right one is good but the left one evil (246 b ). It is generally agreed that the right and left horses represent thumos and passion respectively, while the charioteer symbolizes reason. Plato goes on to describe a procession which the gods and daimones make up to the outer edge of heaven in order to contemplate the Forms which lie beyond. The gods, we are told, make the ascent easily and when they reach the edge of heaven have no difficulty in staying there and beholding the Forms. The daimones, however, experience difficulty due to the recalcitrance of the evil horse, which all their charioteers possess (247 b Plato divides the daimones into three main groups: those who succeed in beholding the Forms though with difficulty; those whose vision is only partial; those, finally, who fail to see the Forms at all. Since contemplation of the Forms provides the nourishment by which the wings of the soul are nurtured, those daimones who fail to see the Forms at all lose their wings and fall to earth. They have to go through a series of earthly existences for 10,000 years, before they regain their wings and return to heaven.

This article is an excerpt from the book Integrating EMDR Into Your Practice (Royle & Kerr, 2010), which is a hands-on guide to facilitate the successful integration of eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) training into therapists’ practice while recognizing that trainees come from a range of theoretical backgrounds. This excerpt focuses on identifying the appropriate target memory and its related negative cognition (NC) in preparation for desensitization. Clients and therapists need to understand the rationale for selecting a particular target utilizing prioritization and clustering techniques. The importance of the belief system is discussed and methods of identifying the initial targets are offered, including the floatback technique. Many practitioners experience difficulty in getting the right NC, and methods for drawing this out are illustrated. Final preparations prior to desensitization are considered as well as the importance of addressing client anxieties and expectations. Throughout the excerpt, case vignettes are used to outline cautions and common pitfalls encountered by the novice EMDR therapist.

Ridley Scott was interested in creating a film about the right action of knights, their ability to do the correct thing in any situation they encountered. Kingdom of Heaven, set during the Crusades, depicts the massive battle fought for religion. The epic 145-minute movie was a tremendous undertaking, utilizing massive numbers of extras and a large cast and crew. Kingdom of Heaven is a realistic and at times graphically violent film. One of Scott’s most impressive war films, it is an unflinching look into the Crusades, one of history’s fiercest wars. A Good Year is a romantic comedy set predominately in France in which a man’s lifestyle is turned inside out when he is reunited with the love of his life, whom he first met when they were children.

This causes Indonesian students who are accustomed to Latin letters to experience difficulty in learning Han characters. Therefore, it is important to know the accuracy of the Han characters learning strategies used by students, so that lecturers can provide direction and guidance in choosing the right learning strategy. This research is a descriptive qualitative study using a questionnaire to record learning strategies, learning attitudes, and obstacles faced when learning Han characters and the efforts made to overcome them. The research was measured using a Likert scale of 1-5 and analyzed by the percentage descriptive with the results showing that respondents have a positive attitude in learning, but some respondents still depend on the use of pinyin, the intensity of the exercise is not maximal and not all respondents take advantage of the characteristics of the Han characters to increase the effectiveness in remembering and learning the writing, pronunciation, and meaning of Han characters. Keywords: Han character, learning strategy, Chinese

The principle that children and young people are capable of forming their own views, have the right to express those views, and are entitled to have those views taken seriously was introduced by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) in 1989. The implications for the delivery of healthcare are clear; however, children and young people continue to experience difficulty in having their views heard and taken seriously during healthcare encounters and the effectiveness of the UNCRC, in particular Article 12 appears to be limited. This article will discuss how, 30 years on, significant barriers continue to impede the full implementation of Article 12. In recognition of the limited awareness of its scope or even existence by health professionals working with children, a framework that can facilitate a better understanding of the concept of voice, and articulate healthcare organisations’ full responsibilities when it comes to Article 12, is presented.

SummaryRecently, there has been a proliferation of international agreements imposing minimum standards on states in respect of their treatment of foreign investors and allowing investors to initiate dispute settlement proceedings where a state violates these standards. Of greatest significance to Canada is Chapter 11 of the North American Free Trade Agreement, which provides both standards for state behaviour and the right to initiate binding arbitration. Since 1996, four cases have been brought under Chapter 11. This note describes the Chapter 11 process and suggests some of the issues that may arise as it is increasingly resorted to by investors.

Abstract The target article carefully describes the memory system, centered on the temporal lobe that builds specific memory traces. It does not, however, mention the laterality effects that exist within this system. This commentary briefly surveys evidence showing that clear asymmetries exist within the temporal lobe structures subserving the core system and that the right temporal structures mainly underpin face familiarity feelings.
