Sheep experimentally poisoned by ingestion of Astragalus letiginosus developed cytoplasmic vacuolation of the proximal tubular epithelia within 4 days after beginning of the experiment. Neuronal vacuolation occurred by day 8 and had progressed to neuronolysis by day 16.

Ingestion of 380 g per day of locoweed by pregnant ewes during day 40 to 72 of pregnancy results in vacuolation of the fetal membranes, specifically of the chorionic epithelium. These cells become hypertrophied and their cytoplasm severely vacuolated. It is postulated that this cytoplasmic vacuolation interferes with the transport of nutrients across the placental barrier. The vacuolating factor itself may, or may not, be associated with death of the conceptus and subsequent abortion. A contributing factor may be that luteal cells of the ovary are also extremely vacuolated in the ewes poisoned by locoweed and may not be producing sufficient progesterone to maintain pregnancy.

A 36 year old man presented with a mass in the chest and multiple “hot” focal lesions were identified on bone scan. Fine needle aspiration was performed of the chest mass. Routine histology showed the presence of some bundles of dense fibrous tissue and a diffuse infiltration of mononuclear cells, which varied in size and nucleo-cytoplasmic ratio. The smaller cells had eccentric hyperchromatic nuclei. Nucleoli were noted in the larger cells. There was well marked cytoplasmic vacuolation of some of the cells. Mitosis was present. A small fragment of tissue was received for electron microscopy. Examination of 1 μm sections showed trabeculae of medium-large polygonal cells with eccentric nuclei and occasional nucleoli. Some irregularly shaped cells had well marked cytoplasmic vacuolation. Mitotic figures were present.

The 40-year experience of the department of radiotherapy for lymphoma of the «RRCRST named after. ac. A.M. Granov» of the Ministry of Health of Russia from the standpoint of today is discussed in the article. Modern methods of radiation treatment of Hodgkin's lymphoma at the stages of their sequential development, unique methods of local and total skin radio-therapy with electrons in skin lymphomas, the experience of radiotherapy in patients with lymphomas of various structures of the organ of vision, and the features of fractionation in radiotherapy for patients with plasma-cell tumors are considered. The department developed an original method of medium-dose total body radiotherapy in terms of the conditioning regime before allogeneic transplantation of hematopoietic stem cells for patients with leukemia and lymphomas, for the first time the experience of radiation therapy of patients with acute leukemia with local lesions of various organs and tissues was accumulated.
