The Pathoparasitology of the Alimentary Tract and Pancreas of Nonhuman Primates: A Review

A review of the literature concerning the gross and histologic lesions associated with protozoal and metazoal parasitism in the alimentary tract and pancreas of nonhuman primates is presented. In addition, the natural history, morphology, life cycle, methods for diagnosis, and potential for zoonotic disease are reviewed briefly for each parasite discussed. The parasite species reviewed in detail are those most common or most likely to produce lesions in the alimentary tract and pancreas of the nonhuman primate host. All parasites, both pathogenic and nonpathogenic, in each major group (protozoa: flagellates, sarcodines, sporozoans, neosporans, and ciliates; and metazoa: trematodes, cestodes, nematodes, acanthocephalans, and pentastomids) that have been reported in the nonhuman primate alimentary tract and pancreas are presented in tables.

Studies of nonhuman primate communication are often motivated by the desire to shed light on the evolution of speech. In contrast to human speech, the vocal repertoires of nonhuman primates are evolutionarily highly conserved. Within species-specific constraints, calls may vary in relation to the internal state of the caller or social experience. Receivers can use signalers’ calls to predict upcoming events or behavioral dispositions. Yet nonhuman primates do not appear to express or comprehend communicative or informative intent. Signalers are sensitive to the relation between their own actions and receivers’ responses, and thus, signaling behavior can be conceived as goal directed. Receivers’ ability to integrate information from multiple sources renders the system flexible and powerful. Researchers who take a linguistic or biological perspective on nonhuman primate communication should be aware of the strengths and limitations of their approaches. Both benefit from a focus on the mechanisms that underpin signaling and responses to signals.

Background: Colloid cysts of the third ventricle are a rare entity with an unclear natural history. Although intervening in the setting of a symptomatic patient is fairly straightforward, decision-making for asymptomatic patients is not. Few studies address this question and proposed risk factors for cyst progression vary.A cyst diameter exceeding 1 cm is a common indication for surgery. This is rooted in the belief that the natural history is continued growth. A few cases have recently surfaced that suggests some cysts may spontaneously regress without complication. We describe our experience with two such cases and contrast it with those of others. Methods: We collected all cases of “colloid cysts” identified as incidental findings on Brain CT scans in a large urban center with available follow-up. We then conducted a comprehensive review of the literature. Results: Among all incidental cases from our database, none required surgery and two were found to decrease in size on neuroimaging surveillance with interesting evolution in MRI signal characteristics. These cysts remain asymptomatic at last follow up. Conclusions: The natural history of colloid cysts includes spontaneous regression. This should be mentioned in counseling asymptomatic patients.

Ctenus medius Keyserling, 1891 is a common species in several spots of Mata Atlântica, however there is a great lack of studies in all aspects of its natural history. This work aims to elucidate aspects of ecotope preference compared to large spiders, and to provide data on the development of chromatic patterns during its life cycle. The observations on the behavior of C. medius were done in the campus of Centro Universitário de Barra Mansa (UBM) by means of observations and nocturnal collections using cap lamps. For observations on the development of chromatic patterns, spiderlings raised in laboratory, hatched from an oviposition of a female from campus of UBM, and others spiderlings collected in field were used. The field observations indicate that: C. medius seems to prefer ecotopes characterized by dense shrub vegetation or herbal undergrowth; Lycosa erythrognatha and L. nordeskioldii seems to prefer open sites; Phoneutria nigriventer seems to prefer shrub vegetation and anthropogenic ecotopes as rubbish hills; Ancylometes sp. seems to prefer ecotopes near streams. Concerning chromatic patterns, it was observed that males and females show well distinct patterns during the last two instars, allowing distinction by sex without the use of a microscope. Through chromatic patterns it was also possible to draw a distinction between C. medius and C. ornatus longer that 3 mm cephalothorax width. 69 specimens of C. medius (males and females) collected in the campus of UBM did not show a striking polymorphism in chromatic pattern, but one among 7 adult females collected in National Park of Itatiaia, showed a distinct chromatic pattern.

AbstractPleomorphic adenoma arising in the external auditory canal is rare. We report the case of a 38-year-old man. To better grasp the clinical features and natural history of this uncommon tumour, we also reviewed the world wide literature and found 24 similar cases, which we analysed together with our own.

AbstractSinonasal malignant melanoma is rare and usually occurs in the nasal cavity. Presentation is often varied and occurs late in the natural history of the disease, resulting in a poor prognosis. A case is reported of a patient with malignant melanoma arising from the frontal sinus who presented with a forehead swelling and progressive confusion. A review of the literature on malignant melanoma in the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses regarding its presentation, site of origin and principles of management is discussed.

Idiopathic avascular necrosis of the scaphoid is a rare condition. A review of the literature shows a variety of conditions labelled as spontaneous avascular necrosis or Preiser’s disease. In this paper we report on a study of eight patients with idiopathic avascular necrosis affecting only the proximal pole of the scaphoid. Seven of these patients had positive ulnar variance. The possible aetiology is discussed and the natural history has been studied. A staging system is proposed, as this helps to determine the prognosis and appropriate management. Two of our patients were managed conservatively; the others were treated successfully by partial silastic replacement of the scaphoid
