The Ministry of Transportation of Ontario (MTO), Canada, is currently implementing an asset management business framework (AMBF). The AMBF provides the ministry with an ambitious blueprint for incorporating asset management concepts into its existing business processes. A key component in the AMBF is the ability to integrate results from the ministry's existing management systems. In support of the AMBF, MTO has developed a prototype executive support system (ESS). The ESS is a what-if analysis tool that predicts network performance over time using data from the ministry's pavement and bridge management systems. It enables decision makers to evaluate the relationship between performance and budget and to view results by region, corridor, or functional class. This paper presents the analytical approach used to develop the ESS and describes how it was implemented by MTO. The ESS uses a candidate-based approach to system integration, which enables the integration of any management system capable of generating work candidates and estimating their impact on a defined set of performance measures. The ESS brings together data from these systems and performs an additional level of cross-asset economic optimizations, taking into account user-defined operating assumptions. Although much work has recently been done on the integration of pavement and bridge systems, the objective of this paper is to present a practical example implemented by MTO.

Bearing in mind the legislation that sets out the principles of sound financial management, a good understanding of the internal control mechanisms and how they work in practice is necessary. The established level of financial management and control among users of public funds is of unequal quality and has not sufficiently contributed to reducing weaknesses in internal control and raising management responsibility to the optimum level. In order to implement modern management concepts, public companies have to have large access to internal control mechanisms or "tools" to assist in management.Integrated management systems with their modern process approach in business organization and comprehensive and fast processing of information on business changes can significantly contribute to the quality of business control. Research on this issue is based on the fact that the introduction of control standards increases the orderliness and documentation of the system, which significantly contributes to the control of business processes. The aim of this paper is to show that the mutual interdependence of integrated management systems through the overall organization structure with the system of financial management and control, as their final outcome, ensure financial integrity and compliance with policies and procedures and promote effective management processes.

Some of the most extensive information management and decision support systems at state departments of transportation (DOTs) are used in maintenance for condition tracking, work planning, budget estimation, and quality assurance. DOTs are confronted with the challenge of managing these and emerging environmental information and decision support needs in integrated systems that incorporate transportation and environmental assets and quality and the activities, materials, labor, budget, and tools needed to assess and manage them. Systems integration remains an elusive goal. Although a few states are pursuing integrated asset management systems, recent leaps forward have been frequently limited to integration of management systems within a single functional area, e.g., integration of Pontis for bridge management with Virtis to bridge load rating. In that decentralized context, this paper presents several leading examples or best practices in asset and maintenance quality management in various areas of maintenance where environmental aspects that are difficult to quantify have begun to be incorporated.

Pavement markings are essential elements of transportation infrastructure with critical impacts on safety and mobility. They provide road users with the necessary information to adjust driving behavior or make calculated decisions about commuting. The visibility of pavement markings for drivers can be the boundary between a safe trip and a disastrous accident. Consequently, transportation agencies at the local or national levels allocate sizeable budgets to upkeep the pavement markings under their jurisdiction. Infrastructure asset management systems (IAMS) are often biased toward high-capital-cost assets such as pavements and bridges, not providing structured asset management (AM) plans for low-cost assets such as pavement markings. However, recent advances in transportation asset management (TAM) have promoted an integrated approach involving the pavement marking management system (PMMS). A PMMS brings all data items and processes under a comprehensive AM plan and enables managing pavement markings more efficiently. Pavement marking operations depend on location, conditions, and AM policies, highly diversifying the pavement marking management practices among agencies and making it difficult to create a holistic image of the system. Most of the available resources for pavement marking management focus on practices instead of strategies. Therefore, there is a lack of comprehensive guidelines and model frameworks for developing PMMS. This study utilizes the existing body of knowledge to build a guideline for developing and implementing PMMS. First, by adapting the core AM concepts to pavement marking management, a model framework for PMMS is created, and the building blocks and elements of the framework are introduced. Then, the caveats and practical points in PMMS implementation are discussed based on the US transportation agencies’ experiences and the relevant literature. This guideline is aspired to facilitate PMMS development for the agencies and pave the way for future pavement marking management tools and databases.

With the rapid increase in the global amputee population, there is a clear need to assist amputee care providers with their decision-making during the prosthetic prescription process. To achieve this, an evidence-based decision support system that encompasses existing literature, current decision-making strategies employed by amputee care providers and patient-specific factors is proposed. Based on an extensive literature review combined with natural language processing and expert survey, the factors influencing the current decision-making of amputee care providers in prosthetic prescription were identified. Following that, the decision-making strategies employed by expert and novice prosthetists were captured and analyzed. Finally, a fundamental understanding of the effect gait analysis has on the decision-making strategies of prosthetists was studied. Findings from this work lay the foundation for developing a real-time decision support system integrated with a portable gait analysis tool to enhance prescription processes. This is critical in the low-income countries where there is a scarcity of amputee care providers and resources for an appropriate prescription.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to describe how systems automating the local document supply process (such as integrated library systems and ILL management systems) can be integrated with systems automating regional document requesting (interlending). This is illustrated with a case study of DocFlow, an ILL management system developed in-house at Karolinska Institutet and its integration with Libris, the national interlending system in Sweden. Design/methodology/approach – The present paper describes how system integration between Libris and DocFlow was accomplished in practice. It also discusses various aspects of integration between systems offering automation of document supply. Findings – Integration between local document supply workflows and regional document request flows may involve techniques such as import of outgoing and incoming interlending requests, synchronization of status values between systems, exchange of messages between systems and quick links to the native interfaces of external systems. Practical implications – The paper brings up various aspects to consider when developing or procuring a system for the local management of ILL workflows. Originality/value – The paper may provide a deeper understanding of system integration, as it applies to the document supply process.
