An innovating business model for the higher education sector: A platform-based approach to university career services

With a changing landscape of higher education institutions (HEIs), the authors explore the concepts of a platform business model in the context of university career services. Through an inductive, multiyear case study of an HEI, this study analyzes how university career services can innovate and transform by operating as a platform. This exploratory research bridges the gap between HEIs and business by applying a well-developed theoretical framework for platform business models to HEIs.

The coronavirus pandemic (pandemic) is posing difficult and unpredictable challenges for Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). They have to adapt their business models (BMs), traditional working mechanisms and the way they transfer their knowledge to their students. The aim of this paper is to show how HEI of applied sciences overcame these challenges, and how they adapted its BM. The case study methodology was used. Based on the case of DOBA Business School Maribor, Slovenia, authors present how it reacted to the changed business and education circumstances. Discussion and concluding remarks stress out the lessons Doba Business School has learned from the pandemic so far and how these insights can help other HEIs to change their BMs in order to cope better in these challenging times.

Abstract The evolution in the sector set new tasks for Higher Education Institutions (HEIs)*, where — in addition to educational activity — their cooperation with other entities is assumed, which will make it possible to take up contemporary challenges. One of these is University Social Responsibility (USR)*, the popularity of which is growing; however, this area is not sufficiently recognized in the relevant literature. This fact was an important premise for undertaking research to assess the current state of the higher education sector in the context of the implementation of the concept of social responsibility. The purpose of the paper is to show students’ opinions on the implementation of USR by HEIs and their knowledge of SR. The author’s intention is to present the results of her own research. The material obtained in the course of the survey showed that the symptoms of the adaptation of the concept of Social Responsibility (SR)* to HEI management were identified, but the degree of their involvement in this area is insufficient, as is the level of students’ knowledge in the field of SR. The exploratory research referred to in this article is an introduction to a broader scope of research.

Partnerships, strategic leadership, and educational collaborative networks are paramount to underpinnings of systemic change along the education continuum. Community, political, and corporate stakeholders transcending primary, secondary, and postsecondary education markets are supporting actors in the education of a growing diversity of students throughout the 21st century. Ascendancy of academic capitalism and neoliberalism incorporated into educational institutions' strategic business model seek to establish a competitive advantage while simultaneously fulfilling higher education institutions' mission. These conditions serve as a pivotal entry point for underrepresented, minoritized students to excel academically and vocationally. A neoliberalism theoretical framework is the mechanism of disruption undergirding the education continuum.

Increased competition between higher education institutions has driven them to seek ways to increase demand to improve your results. Yield Management meets this need as a support management tool that works the balance between demand and supply in order to maximize revenue. Within this context, this study aims to analyze how the Yield Management can be used to optimize the revenue of an undergraduate degree at a distance of a top community college. Therefore, the study involves the application of exploratory research, qualitative approach in the form of case study. Data collection was conducted through interviews. From the results found that: i) the institution has the necessary requirements for the application of Yield Management Tool; ii) there is a decrease in enrollment in the past two semesters and that the strategies used by the course are not enough to fill the vacancies offered; iii) that the proposed model will allow the course has strategies for the balance between supply and demand, increasing enrollment and thus becoming more competitive.

AbstractThis paper proposes a semantic framework for Business Model evaluation and its application to a real case study in the context of smart energy and sustainable mobility. It presents an ontology based representation of an original business model and examples of inferential rules for knowledge extraction and automatic population of the ontology. The real case study belongs to the GreenCharge European Project, that in these last years is proposing some original business models to promote sustainable e-mobility plans. An original OWL Ontology contains all relevant Business Model concepts referring to GreenCharge’s domain, including a semantic description of TestCards, survey results and inferential rules.
