New aromatic poly(ether ether ketone imide)s, [PEEKimide]s, were synthesized successfully from 1,3-bis-4′-(4″-aminophenoxy benzoyl) benzene and various commercially available aromatic dianhydrides, such as pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA), 3,3′,4,4′-benzophenone tetracarboxylic dianhydride (BTDA), 3,3′,4,4′-biphenyl tetracarboxylic dianhydride (BPDA), 4,4′-oxydiphthalic anhydride (OPDA) and 4,4′-(hexafluro isoproylidene) diphthalic anhydride (HFDA), by two step polycondensation method. These PEEKimides were characterized by FT-IR, solubility in organic solvents, inherent viscosity, DSC, TGA and WXRD. Inherent viscosities of the precursor poly(ether ether ketone amic acid)s were in the range of 0.23–0.40 dl/g in DMF, indicating formation of moderate to high molecular weights. These poly(ether ether ketone imide)s showed good solubility in polar aprotic solvents such as N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc), N-methyl 2-pyrrolidone (NMP), N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) and dimethyl sulphoxide (DMSO) and had glass transition temperatures in the range 245–279°C. Poly(ether ether ketone imide)s showed no weight loss below 280°C; temperatures for 10% weight loss (T10) were in the range of 406–483°C and char yields at 800°C were 17–34%, indicating their good thermal stability. All these poly(ether ether ketone imide)s were amorphous in nature, as per patterns of WXRD which exhibited diffuse broad halos at (2θ = 10–30°) and amorphous nature was reflected in polymer’s good solubility in common organic solvents.

Fluorene-based poly(imino ketone)s (PIKF) were designed and synthesized by reacting 1,4-Bis-(4-bromobenzoyl)-benzene and 9,9-bis(3-R-4-aminophenyl)fluorine (R: H, CH3 or F). The structures of the resulting polymers were characterized by FT-IR, 1H NMR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. The thermo and optical properties of PIKF were evaluated. Good solubility of PIKF in ordinary organic solvents such as THF and chloroform was confirmed. PIKF were amorphous at room temperature. No phase transition except for Tg was confirmed in the DSC analysis. PIKF displayed a high glass transition temperature (Tg > 215 °C) in comparison with commercially available poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK Tg = 169 °C). The UV-vis absorption spectrum of polymers exhibited two absorption peaks around 271 nm and 369 nm; The fluorescence spectrum of the PIKF-1, 2 and PIKF-3 showed a maximum emission wavelength at 502 nm and 491 nm, respectively. These optical properties were probably related to the cardo structure of the fluorene moiety placed on the main chain.

Poly(ether ether ketone)-based (PEEK-based) composites with high electrical conductivity, good mechanical properties, and thermal stability were prepared using multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) as a conductive filler and the liquid crystalline copolymer of poly(aryl ether ketone) (FPEDEKKLCP) as a processing aid. The composites were fabricated using melt blending, and the MWCNT/PEEK composites with FPEDEKKLCP exhibited an obvious improvement in the measured electrical conductivity relative to the MWCNT/PEEK composite without FPEDEKKLCP. Moreover, the MWCNT/PEEK composites exhibited good mechanical properties and thermal stability after addition of an appropriate amount of FPEDEKKLCP. This is attributed to the good thermal stability of FPEDEKKLCP, wherein addition of FPEDEKKLCP effectively decreased the melt viscosity of the MWCNT/PEEK composites, accompanied by an improvement in the dispersion of the MWCNTs in the PEEK matrix.

A series of modified poly(ether ether ketone)s containing different content of benzene pendant group in the molecular chain have been successfully synthesized with 1,1-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)-1-phenylethane, bisphenol A and 4,4′-difluorobenzophenone by nucleophilic substitution. The inherent viscosities of obtained polymers were in the range of 0.261–0.889 dLg−1. They were found to have high glass transition temperatures (Tg) of 150–168°C and 148–169°C (examined by DSC and DMA, respectively), good thermal stability with 5% weight-loss temperature (T5%) of 439–469°C. The tensile strengths of the obtained polymers were 67.7–86.6 MPa, and the storage modulus was over 0.9 GPa at about 140°C. The modified poly(ether ether ketone)s showed the excellent solubility property, they could be processed by solution method. Additionally, the obtained polymers had good optical transmittance (>70%) at 400 nm, suggesting that they have potential to be applied to the heat-resistant optical films.

Polyelectrolyte membrane (PEM) is an important part of PEM fuel cell. Nafion is a commercially known membrane which gives the satisfactory result in PEM fuel cell operating at low temperature. Present research paper includes functionalization of Poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK) polymer with phosphonic acid group. The functionalization was done with the help of nickel-based catalyst. Further, the polymer was characterized by the FTIR, EDAX, DSC, TGA, and 1H NMR, and it was found that PEEK polymer was functionalized with phosphonic acid group with good thermal stability in comparison to virgin PEEK. Finally, the thin films of functionalized polymer were prepared by solution casting method, and proton conductivity of film samples was measured by impedance spectra whose value was found satisfactory with good thermal stability in comparison to commercially available Nafion membrane.

The soluble poly (ether ether ketone) (PEEK) containing trifluoromethyl group (FPEEK) was prepared by nucleophilic polycondensation reaction of 4, 4'-difluorobenzophenone and 4, 4′-(hexafluoroisopropylidene) diphenol in the presence of an excess of anhydrous K2CO3 with tetramethylene sulfone as the solvent. The structure and thermal stability of FPEEK were studied by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometer and thermogravimetric analyzer. The solubility of FPEEK was also investigated using different organic solvents. Then the solution of FPEEK in N, N-dimethylformamide (DMF) was applied to prepare insulating coating. The mechanical properties of the coating were tested. The results show that FPEEK is soluble in common organic solvents such as chloroform, tetrahydrofuran and DMF. FPEEK shows high thermal stability with the initial degradation temperature of 536 °C in nitrogen. The insulating coatings of FPEEK exhibit the good adhesion, flexibility and impact resistance.
