Bearings are designed to support the loads normally applied to the shaft, while allowing relative movement between two machine elements. Journal or sliding bearings are perhaps the most well-known sorts of hydrodynamic bearings. The journal bearings contain no rolling elements and these bearings’ design and construction are simple, but their operation and theory are complex. Due to this and other advantages, journal bearings are much preferred in engineering applications. Simultaneously, the associated research and development have resulted in reasonable progress and therefore, a thorough review of these is earnestly felt. The static and dynamic characteristics of hydrodynamic journal bearings mainly depend on the lubricant viscosity and other factors such as load, speed, friction, and eccentricity. The review analysis focused on nanofluid lubricated hydrodynamic journal bearings are one of the rare topics of interest among tribologists. The use of a nanofluid as a lubricant is very important as it significantly improves the performance characteristics of the investigated bearing. The aggregation of nanoparticles in lubricants available commercially can cause a sharp increase in pressure drop and significantly improve the lubricant viscosity, which leads to an increase in load-carrying capacity. The tribological properties of various lubricants/base oils can be augmented by nanoparticles containing the lubricant. Studies have shown that compared to other conventional engine oils the load-carrying capacity is increased with nanoparticles containing the lubricant.

Using the results shown in some previous papers, the overall characteristics of bearings lubricated with ferrofluids are calculated. First, the load carrying capacity of infinitely long sliding and journal bearings is considered. The pressure center and the attitude angle are also determined. Then, similar characteristics of finite bearings are obtained. In both cases, the new boundary conditions and the actual film extent under magnetic stresses are taken into account. It is shown that friction forces are mainly affected by the change in viscosity due to magnetic particle suspensions, while magnetic stresses modify friction only under special conditions which usually are not met in lubrication. In addition, the flow rates and the side flow coefficients are calculated. It is shown that the lubricant leakage can be reduced and even avoided when proper measures are taken. For short bearings, diagrams are given for the film extent, the film boundaries, the load carrying capacity, and the attitude of the journal center.

Purpose This paper aims to analyze the pressure distribution of rectangular aerostatic thrust bearing with a single air supply inlet using the complex potential theory and conformal mapping. Design/methodology/approach The Möbius transform is used to map the interior of a rectangle onto the interior of a unit circle, from which the pressure distribution and load carrying capacity are obtained. The calculation results are verified by finite difference method. Findings The constructed Möbius formula is very effective for the performance characteristics researches for the rectangular thrust bearing with a single air supply inlet. In addition, it is also noted that to obtain the optimized load carrying capacity, the square thrust bearing can be adopted. Originality/value The Möbius transform is found suitable to describe the pressure distribution of the rectangular thrust bearing with a single air supply inlet.
