In order to improve the performance of the traditional constant-width herringbone grooved journal bearing in a computed tomography tube under a high-temperature environment, the present study designed a convergent herringbone grooved journal bearing (HGJB) structure lubricated by liquid metal. The bearing oil film thickness and the Reynolds equation considering the influence of turbulence are established and solved by using the finite difference method in the oblique coordinate system. The performance of the two bearings was compared, and the static and dynamic performance change trends of the two bearing structures under different eccentricities were systematically studied. The results show that the convergent herringbone grooved journal bearings are superior to the constant-width herringbone grooved journal bearings in terms of bearing capacity and stiffness coefficient. At the same time, the influence of structural parameters, such as the number of grooves, helix angle, groove to ridge ratio, groove depth on the performance of the constant-width herringbone grooved journal bearings, and the convergent herringbone grooved journal bearings was studied. Finally, we conclude that the performance of the convergent herringbone grooved journal bearings is optimal when the number of grooves is 15–20, the helix angle is 30–45°, the ratio of the groove to ridge is 1, and the groove depth is 0.02 mm −0.024 mm. This research has provided the thinking and reference basis for the design of liquid metal bearings for high-performance CT equipment.

Surface texturing can improve the performance of journal bearing system. The present study theoretically investigates the impact of surface textures on the dynamic stability and performance parameters of two-lobe journal bearing system. Galerkin's finite element method is used to solve the Reynolds equation governing the flow of lubricant in the gap between the bearing and the journal. Reynolds boundary conditions are applied in the simulation study of plain, full-textured, partially textured-I and partially textured-II configurations of two-lobe journal bearing. The dynamic stability and performance parameters of textured two-lobe journal bearings are computed with the variation of eccentricity ratio and dimple depth and compared with circular bearing results. The results indicate that the existence of surface textures in the pressure build-up zone ranging from 126°–286° and at unity dimple aspect ratio can significantly improve the dynamic stability and performance parameters of two-lobe bearing system.

A thermohydrodynamic model was used to study the influence of partial composite coatings on the behavior of plain journal bearings, considering solid elastic deformations and wall slip occurring at the oil film–polytetrafluoroethylene coating interface, and heat conduction between film, coating, interlayer and basement. The purpose is to design partial polytetrafluoroethylene coating to obtain improved bearing behavior based on analyzing the maximum temperature and minimum film thickness in different coating positions (or slip zones). The influences of coating thickness and coating materials (polytetrafluoroethylene, graphite and diamond-like carbon coatings) at different coating positions are also presented. Results show that polytetrafluoroethylene coatings that are completely located in the film convergent region have a small influence on thermal behavior in both nonslip and slip cases. Without slip, a full polytetrafluoroethylene coating can increase the maximum temperature; however, wall slip occurring on a full polytetrafluoroethylene coating surface is helpful in decreasing the maximum temperature when accompanied by a lower minimum film thickness. A thicker polytetrafluoroethylene coating causes bearing seizures more readily. Unlike polytetrafluoroethylene, graphite and diamond-like carbon coatings improve the thermal behavior.

In this paper, a modified partial derivative method is developed to predict the linear and nonlinear dynamic coefficients of tilting-pad journal bearings with journal and pad perturbation. To this end, Reynolds equation and its boundary conditions along with equilibrium equations of the pad are used. Finite difference, partial derivative method, and perturbation technique have been employed simultaneously for solving these equations. The accuracy of the results is investigated by comparing the linear dynamic coefficients of three types of tilting-pad journal bearings with those published the literature. It is shown that the nonlinear dynamic coefficients depend on Sommerfeld number, eccentricity ratio, and length to diameter ratio. Similar to the case of linear dynamic coefficients of TPJB, it is observed that the eccentricity ratio effects on nonlinear dynamic coefficients are more notable when the eccentricity ratio is higher than 0.8 or less than 0.2.

Bearings are designed to support the loads normally applied to the shaft, while allowing relative movement between two machine elements. Journal or sliding bearings are perhaps the most well-known sorts of hydrodynamic bearings. The journal bearings contain no rolling elements and these bearings’ design and construction are simple, but their operation and theory are complex. Due to this and other advantages, journal bearings are much preferred in engineering applications. Simultaneously, the associated research and development have resulted in reasonable progress and therefore, a thorough review of these is earnestly felt. The static and dynamic characteristics of hydrodynamic journal bearings mainly depend on the lubricant viscosity and other factors such as load, speed, friction, and eccentricity. The review analysis focused on nanofluid lubricated hydrodynamic journal bearings are one of the rare topics of interest among tribologists. The use of a nanofluid as a lubricant is very important as it significantly improves the performance characteristics of the investigated bearing. The aggregation of nanoparticles in lubricants available commercially can cause a sharp increase in pressure drop and significantly improve the lubricant viscosity, which leads to an increase in load-carrying capacity. The tribological properties of various lubricants/base oils can be augmented by nanoparticles containing the lubricant. Studies have shown that compared to other conventional engine oils the load-carrying capacity is increased with nanoparticles containing the lubricant.

Today, considerable uses of aerodynamic journal bearings have attracted the attention of many researchers in the field of tribology. Therefore, the theoretical and experimental analysis of their performance has been the subject of many researches. Growing application of the gas journal bearings is due to their capability in various engineering fields such as instrumentation and high-speed machines like spindles, small-scale turbomachines, and precision gyroscopes, dental milling machines, and many other rotor-bearing systems. Upgrading the performance of gas bearings by changing their geometry or using new compressible lubricants has always been one of the suggestions proposed by the tribology researchers. Recently, the development of new technologies such as laser milling and lithography increased the possibility of creating textured surfaces as a way to improve the performance of journal bearings. So, in this study, the effects of texture geometry on the steady-state performance of two-lobe noncircular aerodynamic journal bearings are presented. For this purpose, the governing Reynolds equation of hydrodynamic gas lubrication is analyzed by finite element method according to the changes of the lubricant film thickness in presence of the cubical, cylindrical, and ellipsoidal surface textures. Results show that the creation of textures on the lower lobe compared to the upper lobe or the whole surface is more effective on the performance of two-lobe aerodynamic bearings. Also, increasing both the dimple depth and the amount of bearings noncircularity, especially at shallow texture depth, cause more significant changes in the lubricant film pressure distribution and the bearing performance parameters such as load-carrying capacity, attitude angle, and frictional power loss. Further, it is obvious that the creation of cubical, cylindrical and ellipsoidal textures especially at shallow depth with an increase in the noncircularity of bearings’ geometry have a higher impact on the steady-state performance of the studied rotor-bearing system, respectively.
