Modelling, analysis and mitigation of self-excited vibrations of a magnetic track brake

Magnetic track brakes work independently of the wheel–rail contact as an additional braking system in railway vehicles. In the past, magnetic track brakes were usually deactivated at velocities below 25 km/h in mainline applications to avoid stopping jerks. However, current demands on braking performance require activation until full stop. During field tests on this subject, severe self-excited vibrations were measured at velocities below 25 km/h. This study analyses the oscillations observed by focusing on the stability behaviour of a simplified linear coupled electro-magneto-mechanical model of the track brake. Key parameters are identified by applying established criteria of linear stability theory. To account for essential nonlinear effects, a detailed multibody dynamics model with flexible bodies including a more enhanced electro-magnetic model is introduced and parameterised by using measurement data. Simulation results reveal two separate (or combined) mechanisms that may lead to self-excitation. On the one hand, friction-induced vibrations between the magnets and the rail; on the other hand, coupling effects between the electro-magnetic and the mechanical subsystems of the track brake may be the cause of the self-excited vibrations observed. Stability behaviour is influenced by various design parameters and in particular by the contact conditions between track brake and rail. Finally, a few passive methods are briefly discussed that may help to mitigate or reduce self-excited vibrations at low velocities in future designs of track brakes.

The stability of an immiscible layer of fluid bounded by two other fluids of different viscosities and migrating through a porous medium is analysed, both theoretically and experimentally. Linear stability analyses for both one-dimensional and radial flows are presented, with particular emphasis upon the behaviour when one of the interfaces is highly stable and the other is unstable. For one-dimensional motion, it is found that owing to the unstable interface, the intermediate layer of fluid eventually breaks up into drops.However, in the case of radial flow, both surface tension and the continuous thinning of the intermediate layer as it moves outward may stabilize the system. We investigate both of these stabilization mechanisms and quantify their effects in the relevant parameter space. When the outer interface is strongly unstable, there is a window of instability for an intermediate range of radial positions of the annulus. In this region, as the basic state evolves to larger radii, the linear stability theory predicts a cascade to higher wavenumbers. If the growth of the instability is sufficient that nonlinear effects become important, the annulus will break up into a number of drops corresponding to the dominant linear mode at the time of rupture.In the laboratory, a Hele-Shaw cell was used to study these processes. New experiments show a cascade to higher-order modes and confirm quantitatively the prediction of drop formation. We also show experimentally that the radially spreading system is stabilized by surface tension at small radii and by the continual thinning of the annulus at large radii.

Abstract Inspired by gecko’s adhesive feet, a wheeled wall climbing robot is designed in this paper with the synchronized gears and belt system acting as the wheels by considering both motion efficiency and adhesive capability. Adhesion of wheels is obtained by the bio-inspired adhesive material wrapping on the outer surface of wheels. A ducted fan mounted on the back of the robot supplies thrust force for the adhesive material to generate normal and shear adhesion force whilemoving on vertical surfaces. Experimental verification of robot climbing on vertical flat surface was carried out. The stability and the effect of structure design parameters were analyzed.

AbstractLocal linear stability analysis has been shown to provide valuable information about the response of jet diffusion flames to flow-field perturbations. However, this analysis commonly relies on several modelling assumptions about the mean flow prescription, the thermo-viscous-diffusive transport properties, and the complexity and representation of the chemical reaction mechanisms. In this work, the effects of these modelling assumptions on the stability behaviour of a jet diffusion flame are systematically investigated. A flamelet formulation is combined with linear stability theory to fully account for the effects of complex transport properties and the detailed reaction chemistry on the perturbation dynamics. The model is applied to a methane–air jet diffusion flame that was experimentally investigated by Füriet al.(Proc. Combust. Inst., vol. 29, 2002, pp. 1653–1661). Detailed simulations are performed to obtain mean flow quantities, about which the stability analysis is performed. Simulation results show that the growth rate of the inviscid instability mode is insensitive to the representation of the transport properties at low frequencies, and exhibits a stronger dependence on the mean flow representation. The effects of the complexity of the reaction chemistry on the stability behaviour are investigated in the context of an adiabatic jet flame configuration. Comparisons with a detailed chemical-kinetics model show that the use of a one-step chemistry representation in combination with a simplified viscous-diffusive transport model can affect the mean flow representation and heat release location, thereby modifying the instability behaviour. This is attributed to the shift in the flame structure predicted by the one-step chemistry model, and is further exacerbated by the representation of the transport properties. A pinch-point analysis is performed to investigate the stability behaviour; it is shown that the shear-layer instability is convectively unstable, while the outer buoyancy-driven instability mode transitions from absolutely to convectively unstable in the nozzle near field, and this transition point is dependent on the Froude number.

The stability of incompressible boundary-layer flows on a semi-infinite flat plate and the growth of disturbances in such flows are investigated by numerical integration of the complete Navier–;Stokes equations for laminar two-dimensional flows. Forced time-dependent disturbances are introduced into the flow field and the reaction of the flow to such disturbances is studied by directly solving the Navier–Stokes equations using a finite-difference method. An implicit finitedifference scheme was developed for the calculation of the extremely unsteady flow fields which arose from the forced time-dependent disturbances. The problem of the numerical stability of the method called for special attention in order to avoid possible distortions of the results caused by the interaction of unstable numerical oscillations with physically meaningful perturbations. A demonstration of the suitability of the numerical method for the investigation of stability and the initial growth of disturbances is presented for small periodic perturbations. For this particular case the numerical results can be compared with linear stability theory and experimental measurements. In this paper a number of numerical calculations for small periodic disturbances are discussed in detail. The results are generally in fairly close agreement with linear stability theory or experimental measurements.

Purpose The purposes of the present study are to ensure higher sustainability of journal bearings under different applied loads and to observe bearing performances such as elastic strain, total deformation and stress formation. Design/methodology/approach A journal bearing test rig was used to determine the effect of the applied load on the bearing friction, film thickness, lubricant film pressure, etc. A steady-state analysis was performed to obtain the bearing performance. Findings An efficient aspect ratio (L/D) range was obtained to increase the durability or the stability of the bearing while the bearing is in the working condition by using SAE 5W-30 oil. The results from the study were compared with previous studies in which different types of oil and water, such as Newtonian fluid (NF), magnetorheological fluid (MRF) and nonmagnetorheological fluid (NMRF), were used as the lubricant. To ensure a preferable aspect ratio range (0.25-0.50), a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis was conducted by ANSYS; the results show a lower elastic strain and deformation within the preferable aspect ratio (0.25-0.50) rather than a higher aspect ratio using the SAE 5W-30 oil. Originality/value It is expected that the findings of this study will contribute to the improvement of the bearing design and the bearing lubricating system.

The loss of stability of the horizontal-plane periodic motion of a steered ship in waves is investigated. In earlier reports we referred to the possibility of a broaching mechanism that will be intrinsic to the periodic mode, whereby there will exist no need for the ship to go through the surf-riding stage. However, about this point the discussion was essentially conjectural. In order to provide substance we present here a theoretical approach that is organized in two stages: Initially, we demonstrate the existence of a mechanism of parametric instability of yaw on the basis of a rudimentary, single-degree model of maneuvering motion in waves. Then, with a more elaborate model, we identify the underlying nonlinear phenomena that govern the large-amplitude horizontal ship motions, considering the ship as a multi-degree, nonlinear oscillator. Our analysis brings to light a very specific sequence of phenomena leading to cumulative broaching that involves a change in the stability of the ordinary periodic motion on the horizontal plane, a transition towards subharmonic response and, ultimately, a sudden jump to resonance. Possible means for controlling the onset of such undesirable behavior are also investigated.

The aeroelastic stability of titanium and composite blades of low aspect ratio is examined over a range of design parameters, using a Rayleigh-Ritz formulation. The blade modes include a plate-type mode to account for chordwise bending. Chordwise flexibility is found to have a significant effect on the unstalled supersonic flutter of low aspect ratio blades, and also on the stability of tip sections of shrouded fan blades. For blades with a thickness of less than approximately four percent of chord, the chordwise, second bending, and first torsion branches are all unstable at moderately high supersonic Mach numbers. For composite blades, the important structural coupling between bending and torsion cannot be modeled properly unless chordwise bending is accounted for. Typically, aft fiber sweep produces beneficial bending-torsion coupling that is stabilizing, whereas forward fiber sweep has the opposite effect. By using crossed-ply laminate configurations, critical aeroelastic modes can be stabilized.

One of the most common and economical methods for waste disposal is landfilling. The landfill cover system is one of the main components of landfills which prevents waste exposure to the environment by creating a barrier between the waste and the surrounding environment. The stability and integrity of the landfill cover system is a fundamental part of the design, construction, and maintenance of landfills. A reinforced tapered landfill cover system can be considered as a practical method for improving its stability; however, the simultaneous effects of seismic and seepage forces in the reinforced tapered landfill cover system have not been studied. The current paper provides a solution based on the limit equilibrium method in order to evaluate the stability of a reinforced tapered landfill cover system under seismic and seepage (both horizontal and parallel seepage force patterns) loading conditions. The proposed analytical approach is applied to different design cases through parametric study and the obtained results are compared to those derived from literature. Parametric study is performed to illustrate the sensitivity of the safety factor (FS) to the different design parameters. The obtained results reveal that parameters which describe the geometry have limited effects on the stability of the landfill cover system in comparison to the rest of the studied design parameters. Moreover, the comparisons between the derived results and available methods demonstrate good agreement between obtained findings with those reported in the literature.
