Majpadu Bricks Sdn. Bhd. was a Malaysian company incorporated in 1996. Majpadu’s business was in manufacturing and supplying compressed clay bricks, known as dry pressed earth brick (DPEB), a type of bricks manufactured using high-density compression technology. Unlike other bricks that were widely available in the market (also known as ordinary baked bricks), Majpadu’s bricks were not ‘fired’ in kilns; as such, DPEB was claimed to be more eco-friendly, cooler in temperature and yet very durable. Majpadu’s expertise was within the engineering process as well as the technical knowledge of DPEB. Apart from its main business, it also offered consultancy services to the industry. Over the years, Majpadu saw the company face several internal and external circumstances that affected its bottom line. By early 2017, the situation had become more serious, forcing Mr Zaki Hayat, the Managing Director of Majpadu, to implement a strategy to tackle the problems faced by the company.

This paper aims at bringing about an urgently required, scientific shift of perception in the field of biosolids management and phosphorus recovery from domestic wastewater. The paper shows that under a combination of the prevailing sludge, phosphorus and sustainability paradigms, the worldwide rapidly growing issue on biosolids production leads to a paradox that proper management cannot resolve alone. Change demands for a sound fundamental ecological approach in all sectors involved. To produce low quantities of biosolids of high fertilizing quality that can harmlessly be stored or, functionally applied in relation to agricultural demand is a master challenge for the future, not only technologically. A deep transformation of societal beliefs and structures, economic processes and environmental understanding is equally imperative. The traditional pillars of sustainability will collapse under the tons of daily sludge production unless individually fortified and collectively integrated in a fundamental ecological, single-bottom-line concept of sustainability. Moving forward by meticulously matching, in all domains, practice with ecological theory and science will develop the synergy required for progress and success. The best management device reverses to ‘act globally, think locally’.

For the 1995 Sir Henry Royce Memorial Lecture the author describes the background behind the development of the Volvo B10L low floor citybus. This includes the initial vehicle concept through the simultaneous engineering process to production start, including methods used in the product verification. Views are expressed regarding the future direction of low floor products.

The accent on centralised control has led to a considerable reduction in panel length by the use of high density instrumentation. Condensing the panel length introduces the problem of mounting back of panel equipment in a much reduced area. Several designs of control panels have been developed within the process industry and the paper reviews the various answers to this problem. One particularly successful integrated design is described and includes development, layout, fabrication, shop testing, transport, installation, maintenance and control house layout. The paper concludes with various improvements and innovations for the future and the impact of integrated panel design on manufacturers and users.

Literature data on influence of existing and new groups of drug preparations for dyslipidemias correction are systemized, and molecular mechanisms of their effects are reviewed. The results of experimental and clinical investigations aimed at revealing of new pharmacological targets of dyslipidemias correction were analyzed. The approaches for activation of high density lipoproteins functionality are described. The implementation of alternative preparations with new alternative mechanisms of action may be suggested to improve the effectiveness of traditional treatment in the future.
