Drawing on the notion of “fault lines” and the upper echelons perspective, we argue that the gender fault line strength of a board of directors is negatively related to strategic change. More interestingly, while gender fault line strength negatively relates to strategic change under low levels of environmental complexity, environmental dynamism, and environmental munificence, it is positively related to strategic change when environmental complexity, environmental dynamism, and environmental munificence are at high levels. The analyses of panel data of 5781 firm-year observations of 1171 Chinese firms provide support for the hypotheses.

The research project involved Spain, Portugal, Italy, Brazil, Argentina, and the U.S. The authors of this paper are responsible for the Italian part of the project. The project aims to further the understanding of the role of the board of directors in family businesses, and how the board functions.

Purpose With the materialization of literature on strategic change, it is clear that organizational learning and organizational dynamism have been among the most notable areas of study. The purpose of this paper is to extend the literature on strategic management by examining the mediating effects of organizational learning and the moderating role of environmental dynamism on the relationship between strategic change and firm performance. Design/methodology/approach A survey questionnaire was administered to 650 respondents who were both corporate and business-level managers of 22 main deposit money banks (commercial banks) and their branches across the country. In total, 630 questionnaires were returned and 587 were used after following all the processes of data preparation. Path analysis was employed to test the hypotheses in this study using Smart PLS 3. Findings The study found a significant mediating effect of organizational learning on the relationship between strategic change and firm performance. Although no significant moderating role of environmental dynamism was found, the directions of the path coefficients are consistent with the hypothesis. All the relationships between the constructs are significant. Research limitations/implications It is paramount for managers to understand the type of environment and learning that fits diverse kinds of strategic changes in order to improve firm performance. It is evident that changes that are not proactive and generative organizational learning may seem dangerous for a firm. However, organizations should learn to incorporate the change to be able to compete in a dynamic competitive environment. Originality/value Prior studies on strategic change, environmental dynamism and organizational learning have mainly focused on manufacturing and construction industries in the developed countries, but less has been done in the service sector, particularly the banking organizations in developing countries. Nigeria is one of those countries. Therefore, this study focuses on the links between strategic change and firm performance, moderating role of environmental dynamism and the mediating effect of organizational learning within the context of the Nigerian deposit money banks.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the composition and role of a board of directors in a family-owned microfinance institution (FO-MFI) in Tanzania. Design/methodology/approach The paper is based on a longitudinal analysis of the board practices based on boardroom observations for the period between 2012 and 2015. The study further collected and analyzed qualitative data from interviews with board members, management, and institution staff. Findings The findings indicate that even though external board members were appointed as a result of their diverse expertise and skills, their personal relationships with shareholders, life-cycle stage of the institution, and the nature of the industry influenced their selection. It was also found that the board played more of the service role in strategy formulation, resource mobilization, and networking, and, through that, members were also able to exercise control of the firm. Research limitations/implications Because this paper is based on a qualitative approach, it suffers from the challenge of generalization. However, numerous research issues have been raised that require further investigation. Originality/value This study contributes to the governance literature by showing what really happens in a family-owned firm, as it is based on a unique data set drawn from the boardroom of the FO-MFI in a context of a developing economy. This context is unique, given that most private MFIs operating as family enterprises do not have a professional board of directors. The study shows how the board contributes to a strategic direction of the firm in which the management and ownership are not separated, and the first generation is running the firm.

Abstract A company’s board of directors plays a critical role in making decisions relating to strategy, high-level structure, and the appointment of the CEO. The role of the board and its impact on corporate performance has been well studied; however, the diversity of the board of directors and the corresponding correlation to the level of corporate innovativeness has not been previously investigated. Here, we provide a critical analysis of board members’ diversity as it relates to innovative corporations in what is considered a mature industry in transition to a bioeconomy: the pulp and paper industry. Our findings contribute to the body of knowledge on the role of board member diversity in shaping company culture and how that drives, shapes, and sustains innovation.

Abstract. Establishing new social relationships is important for mastering developmental transitions in young adulthood. In a 2-year longitudinal study with four measurement occasions (T1: n = 245, T2: n = 96, T3: n = 103, T4: n = 85), we investigated the role of social motives in college students’ mastery of the transition of moving out of the parental home, using loneliness as an indicator of poor adjustment to the transition. Students with strong social approach motivation reported stable and low levels of loneliness. In contrast, students with strong social avoidance motivation reported high levels of loneliness. However, this effect dissipated relatively quickly as most of the young adults adapted to the transition over a period of several weeks. The present study also provides evidence for an interaction between social approach and social avoidance motives: Social approach motives buffered the negative effect on social well-being of social avoidance motives. These results illustrate the importance of social approach and social avoidance motives and their interplay during developmental transitions.

Abstract. The current study investigated the associations of psychological resources, social comparisons, and temporal comparisons with general wellbeing. The sample included 142 community participants (47.9% men; age range 23–83 years), who compared themselves with others, and with their younger selves, on eight dimensions (e.g., physical health, resilience). They also completed questionnaires assessing psychological resources of mastery and self-esteem, and three components of subjective wellbeing: life satisfaction and negative and positive affect. The main results showed that high levels of psychological resources contributed to wellbeing, with self-enhancing social and temporal comparisons moderating the effects of resources on certain wellbeing components. Specifically, under low levels of mastery or self-esteem self-enhancing social or temporal comparisons were related to either higher life satisfaction or positive affect. The results highlight the role of resources and comparisons in promoting people’s wellbeing, and suggest that self-enhancing comparisons function as cognitive coping mechanisms when psychological resources are low.

This study explores the association between task conflict and team creativity and the role of group cognitive complexity (GCC) as a potential explanatory mechanism in a sample of 159 students organized in 49 groups. Moreover, we analyzed the moderating effect of collective emotional intelligence (CEI)in the relationship between task conflict and GCC.As hypothesized, we found that task conflict has a nonlinear relationship with GCC, but contrary to our expectations, it follows a U-shaped association, not an inversed U-shape. In addition,the moderating role of CEI was significant only at low levels. Contrary to our expectation, the mediating role of GCC did not receive empirical support. Theoretical and practical contributions are discussed.
