In this article, the cyclic behavior of reinforced concrete column–steel beam connections is investigated. In this research, an experimental and numerical study is conducted on the performance assessment of the through-beam connections with two detailing. The model details consist of the tube plate and steel doubler plate for the joints. The results show that the steel doubler plate increases the yielding capacity and initial stiffness of the connection but has no effect on the maximum capacity of the connection. Results show that using tube plate alone could have a good performance and there is no need for doubler plates. Furthermore, in order to model this type of connection with tube plate, modified model based on the Cordova’s proposed model is presented, and the load-cycle repetition on the connection at both specimens is simulated utilizing the OpenSees software by taking into account the bearing distortions and joint shear, and the obtained results are verified with the experimental ones as well.

AbstractWith spreading of population and increasing of instruction, and also because of limited resources and materials, the demand for using novel materials in building industry has increased. The reinforced concrete columns and steel beams are used in structures with composite moment frame (RCS). Use of compression strength in proportion with concrete and bending strength of steel beam has bestowed these structures less weight than that of concrete structures and made it easier to access the measure of strong column - weak beam especially within long span in these structures. The most important part of these structures is connection of steel beam with the reinforced concrete column. These connections are divided into two general groups of connection with bracing beam and with bracing column from the joint. This paper aims to study the seismic behavior and parameters of RCS composite frame composed of steel beams and strong concrete column. The finite element method was analyzed by ABAQUS software and data analyzed by Excel.

To improve the bearing failure behavior of the exterior steel beam-reinforced concrete column joints composed of reinforced concrete columns, joint details using steel column was proposed. Steel column was attached to the lower flanges at right angles to the steel flange. The objective of this study is to clarify the effectiveness of proposed joint details experimentally and theoretically. To clarify the influence of steel column on the bearing failure of the joint, seven T-shaped subassemblages were tested under reversed cyclic loading. All specimens had the same cross sections of the steel beam. The experimental variables were the embedded length of the steel column, whether there is the end plate at the tip of the embedded steel column, and, the arrangement of transverse reinforcement ratio surrounding the steel column. The following remarks can be drawn from the test results. 1) In case of the specimen with a short embedded length of the steel column, the punching shear failure on the upper surface of the steel beam flange was remarkable when the maximum strength was reached. However, in the specimen with long embedded length of steel column, it was not observed the punching shear failure. 2) The maximum strength increased with the embedded length of the steel column. Further, the maximum strength of the specimen with the embedded length of three times of the steel column depths is subjected to bending yield strength of the steel column. 3) It was shown that the transverse reinforcement to surround the steel column and the end plate were necessary to improve the bearing failure of the joint.

Frames consisting of reinforced concrete column and steel beam (RCS) is a new type of composite structures. Background of the research and application of the RCS composite joints and composite frames are overviewed detailedly in this paper. Then the research evolution of the RCS composite joints including experimental research and numerical simulation in America, Japan and China are described in detail. Finally some problems existing and the development directions of research on RCS framing systems in future are pointed out.
