Assistive technologies can improve the quality of life of people diagnosed with different forms of social communication disorders. We report on the design and evaluation of an affective avatar aimed at engaging the user in a social interaction with the purpose of assisting in communication therapies. A human–avatar taxonomy is proposed to assist the design of affective avatars aimed at addressing social communication disorder. The avatar was evaluated with 30 subjects to assess how effectively it conveys the desired emotion and elicits empathy from the user. Results provide evidence that users become used to the avatar after a number of interactions, and they perceive the defined behavior as being logical. The users’ interactions with the avatar entail affective reactions, including the mimic emotions that users felt, and establish a preliminary ground truth about prototypic empathic interactions with avatars that is being used to train learning algorithms to support social communication disorder evaluation.

Background: neurogenic communication disorders e.g. Dysarthria, aphasia and Voice disorders impacts the quality of life of individuals. A comprehensive picture for an intense understanding of different dimensions, that affecting QOL in neurogenic communication disorder is needed. Objectives: to determine the Quality of life in patients with neurogenic communication disorders Method: The Study design was comparative Cross-sectional survey. A total of n=100 participants were included through Conventional sampling technique. The data was collected from speech therapy department of Pakistan Railway Hospital (PRH) and NESCOM hospital Islamabad. The male and females both were included in the study. The older adults with age range 50-75 years with neurogenic conditions like dysarthria, aphasia and voice disorders related to stroke, Bell’s palsy Parkinson’s disease and triatic brain injury were included in the study The quality of life was assessed through Stroke Aphasia Quality of Life questionnaire. One Way ANOVA was used for comparison between the different conditions regarding quality of life (QOL). Results: the Mean±SD of age was 61.4 + 7.9 years. A total of n=63 participant were male and remaining n-37 were female. The result of One Way ANOVA can be seen in Table 1, which shows that there no significant difference (p≥0.05) in neurogenic communication disorders regarding QOL. Conclusion: It was concluded that quality of life was compromised equally in +neurogenic communication disorders like dysarthria, aphasia and voice disorders

Awareness of socioemotional issues related to childhood communication disorders is increasing. Three themes in recent research have obligated speech-language pathologists to become better educated in socioemotional issues: (a) the interdependence of communication, language, and socioemotional development; (b) the high co-occurrence of communication and emotional/behavioral disorders in children; and (c) the significant effect of a childhood communication disorder on the family system. In this article, relevant literature on these topics is reviewed, and implications for working with young children and their families are presented.

AbstractRare neuromuscular diseases (NDs) are a group of inherited or acquired neurological pathologies affecting the muscles and the nervous system. Their low prevalence and high geographical dispersion can cause isolation and difficulties in social interaction between affected equals. New technologies, such as videoconferencing, offer a complementary option for improving the health of this population. The purpose of this study was to assess the effectiveness of a teleassistance program at improving health-related quality of life (HRQoL) through social interaction in adults with NDs. The sample consisted of 45 participants affected by rare NDs. Twenty-four participants were assigned to the experimental group (EG), which participated in the videoconferencing sessions, and 21 to the control group. Three questionnaires were administered: WHO-DAS II, Sickness Impact Profile, and SF-36 Health Survey. Effectiveness was assessed by a pre-post design. An online psychosocial program was applied over three-month period. Data revealed an improvement of the EG in psychosocial variables, e.g. “Getting along with people” (z = –2.289, r = –.47, p ≤ .05) or “Psychosocial Domain” (z = –2.404, r = –.49, p ≤ .05), and in physical variables, e.g. “Life activities” (z = –2.844, r = –.58, p ≤ .05). Social interaction appeared as a relevant factor at improving HRQoL levels. High levels of satisfaction about the teleassistance program were reported.
