This study assesses the reflection of Middle Eastern media networks on the states and the news concerning the oil crisis and Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) conditions. A critical discourse analysis approach is adopted to analyze 22 articles from Al Jazeera and Al Arabiya regarding the Qatar withdrawal from OPEC. The ideological choices vary as Al Jazeera is focused on the Qatar economy, while Al Arabiya on Saudi Arabia. These online publications have presented a positive self-presentation of their funded country while the negative representation of the other. Al Jazeera has pointed that the exit of Qatar from the OPEC is to focus on its other non–oil production sector, while Al Arabiya has pointed that this exit is due to the primary role of Saudi Arabia, with which Qatar has an on-going conflict. Qatar is symbolic to broaden regional division, which may later diffuse to other OPEC members and will leave no mark on the decision-making process of the alliance.

One news event may be represented differently by different news organizations. Research in news representation remains sparse in Arabic. This article investigates some of the linguistic and textual devices used in journalistic texts. It looks at the way these devices are used to influence public opinion. This gives rise to significance of conducting this research. This study uses these devices within the framework of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). For the purpose of this study, four news articles produced by Aljazeera and Al-Arabiya were examined under CDA in order to show how journalists structure their news stories to imply an ideological stance. The analysis showed that Aljazeera and Al-Arabiya represented the people and the police differently, each according to their ideological and political leanings. This resulted in the public having different opinions of the event.

This article proposes a typology of strategies and tactics of legitimation. The linguistic interpretation of the concepts of “legitimacy” and “legitimation”, developed in the article, is based on the following theoretical sources: on the notions of legitimacy and discursive mechanisms for its maintenance, established in the humanities; to the work of linguists studying the discursive mechanisms of legitimation in line with critical discourse analysis (CDA); to the works of domestic discourses, which analyze the means of ensuring credibility and trust in the discourse (V.B. Kashkin, N.S. Ryadovaya, A.A. Malyshev). Following the CDA experts, the author understands legitimation as discursive practices (genres, strategies and tactics) of ensuring a positive attitude of society to a social actor and its discourse. The material used was 120 corporate texts posted on the websites of companies, in corporate publications, in image booklets, and image and information materials of companies posted in the media were also used. A pragmalinguistic analysis of the texts of commercial and state structures allowed the author of the article to identify the key strategies of legitimation, describe tactics, language means of implementing one of the basic strategies of legitimation – the strategy of positive self-presentation. In general, the analysis of the texts showed that the CD uses two main strategies to ensure legitimation: the strategy of creating images of loyal target audiences (external and internal) and the strategy of building a positive image of the corporation itself. The article focuses on the second strategy, on the tactics and language means of its implementation. A wide range of identified tactics testifies to the importance of the legitimation process for corporations. It was also found that most of the texts providing legitimation relate to PR texts, which allows us to conclude that discursive PR practices are standard ways to ensure legitimation.

In recent years, Saudi women have been empowered on plenty of levels which were not easily available at the dawn of this century. In the last two decades, social change has been initiated, constructed and distributed discursively on both governmental and non-governmental circles; with the topic of women's inclusion in unconventional work environments provoking controversial positions between the heterogenous society of Saudi Arabia. The current paper offers a critical discourse analysis on how these diverse positions are reported metaphorically in blog posts written by bloggers presenting themselves as supporters of change and women empowerment. Such posts were written between 2009 and 2011; thus, documenting the very early support and opposition to this topic, which has also intensified drastically after King Salman -the current Saudi monarch- ascended to throne in 2015, following the death of the late King Abdullah. This study explores gender representation in an international English as a Foreign Language (EFL) textbook that has been specifically adapted for the Saudi Arabian context. It aims to investigate gender frequencies in conversations in three dimensions: gender relations, subject positions, and contents. The quantitative data were analysed using critical discourse analysis (CDA) as a model. The results indicate that the textbook is biased in terms of gender. Women are underrepresented in the textbook. They have been totally excluded from half of the units in the textbook. Also, the equal relations between the two genders are limited to friendship. Although both genders are positioned in the same subjects and contents, women are less frequently characterised than men.

This study investigates the argumentative statements of Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump during the debates. By employing two theories, Van Dijk's Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and Toulmin's model of argument, it aims to expose how various ideologies are expressed in the structure of arguments. It uses Toulmin (2003) model of argument to analyze the structures of argumentation during the debates constituting six elements (i.e. claim, data, warrant, backing, qualifier, and rebuttal). While Van Dijk’s framework covering three levels of discourse structure (the meaning, the argumentation and the rhetoric) is used to analyze the reproduction of racism, manipulation, and Islamophobia. The result indicates the discourse of the candidates contributes the reproduction of manipulation by focusing on the positive self-presentation of “us” (civilized) and negative other-presentationof “them” (terrorists) as a mind control of the audience.

This article is the result of research, one of which is the lack of discourse studies, especially the representation of the news object studies in electronic newspapers. News about woman employees in Saudi Arabia was chosen because there have been many cases that occurred in Saudi Arabia. Several cases such as starting from illegal migrant workers, trafficking, prostitution, suicide, and various legal circumstances that befall Indonesian workers, how the news of women employee is written on Sabq.org newspaper, one of the leading online publications in Saudi Arabia. All cannot be separated from the media representation or depiction of an object. Representatives of woman employees will be dissected based on contextual illustration-writer-text-context reader theory by Sara Mills. The qualitative method of Critical Discourse Analysis was chosen as a means for collecting data. The technique of analyzing data used in this study is using the framework of Sara Mills's analysis related to the position of subject and object of the news. The research findings showed that Sabq.org portrays woman employees poorly, marginalizes minority groups by not showing woman employees in the news, dominant groups represent their presence, establishing ideology of dominant groups (employee) and tends to be gender-biased.   Artikel ini dilatarbelakangi minimnya kajian wacana, khususnya representasi pada objek kajian berita pada surat kabar elektronik (SKE). Berita tentang Tenaga Kerja Wanita (TKW) di Arab Saudi menjadi pilihan karena alasan banyaknya kasus yang terjadi pada TKW di Arab Saudi, mulai dari TKI ilegal, kasus trafficking, prostitusi TKW, bunuh diri dan beragam kasus hukum yang menimpa buruh migran wanita Indonesia. Bagaimana wacana TKW digambarkan dalam berita Sabq. Org, salah satu koran online terkemuka di Arab Saudi tidak lepas dari representasi atau penggambaran media atas suatu objek. Representasi TKW akan dibedah dengan teori ilustrasi konteks penulis- teks-konteks pembaca dari Sara Mills. Metode kualitatif Analisis Wacana Kritis (critical discourse analysis) dipilih sebagai alat mencari data. Teknik analisis penelitian ini menggunakan kerangka analisis Sara Mills terkait posisi subjek-objek berita. Hasil dari penelitian ini adalah Sabq.Org menggambarkan TKW dengan buruk, memarjinalkan kelompok minoritas (TKW) dengan tidak menampilkan TKW dalam pemberitaan, kehadirannya diwakili oleh kelompok dominan, memapankan ideologi kelompok dominan (majikan) dan cenderung bias gender.

This research examines online media related to the cases of Indonesian celebrities using critical discourse analysis approach. It aims to explain the textual strategies used by online media upon reporting the cases. The textual strategy focuses on the selection of certain vocabulary and the use of specific grammar. The data are collected through reading and note taking techniques on news texts in the online media, liputan6.com and kapanlagi.com, with certain topics such as: the divorce of Marshanda, Asmirandah interfaith marriage, and the case of celebrity prostitution. The current descriptive qualitative research employs critical discourse analysis proposed by van Dijk which generally believes that media always contains interests and partisanships. Therefore, they tend to provide positive picture of themselves/groups (positive self-presentation) and negative images about others (negative other-presentation).The picture can be analyzed through the way the media use the diction and build certain sentences inside the news. The result shows that media uses the vocabulary such as mothers who have an affair, women who cannot be emulated, presumptuous women, a liar man, no longer Muslim, etc. when reporting on the case of Marshanda’s divorce and Asmirandah’s interfaith marriage. Furthermore, the researcher finds the use of passivation, abstraction, categorization, identification and anonymity strategies in grammar.
