New products improve competitiveness through their creativity and innovativeness. Creativity and innovativeness are parallel yet non-identical concepts; newly introduced products are either somewhat thematically similar or taxonomically similar to the existing products. There is a need for the explication of creativity and innovativeness as separate or as unified concepts in newly developed products, in particular, thematic products. A mixed-method design was adopted to establish definitions and components of creativity and innovativeness in the ideas presented at the innovation summit through 489 perceptual reports on 14 feature-based and theme-based product ideas. On the whole, three components—originality, value, and commercial appeal—were derived and tested. Results revealed the significance of originality as a major component of creativity and innovativeness in all products. Perceived value was significantly related to originality in both taxonomic and thematic products. Originality and value predicted creativity whereas innovativeness was predicted by commercial appeal along with originality and value in all products. The underlying purchase intention in taxonomic and thematic product ideas was the product’s relatedness with lifestyle. A product idea to be implemented in business as innovation was found to be dependent on its creativity and commercial appeal. This asserted three factors mandatory at the Fuzzy Front End (FFE), namely, originality, value, and commercial appeal. Discussion includes the interpretation of results and future directions.

New product development (NPD) is essential to most business organizations to create new values and protect existing values for maintaining high profitability and sustainability. However, the success of NPD projects is deemed to be difficult and challenging owing to high organizational complexity, uncertain business environment, and time-critical innovation. Under the smart manufacturing paradigm, NPD is an active research area to establish effective measures through the adoption of systematic approaches so as to facilitate idea management in the fuzzy front end for the product innovation. In this paper, the domain of new product idea selection is focused on and enhanced by means of the multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) approach, in which multiple criteria and sub-criteria can be considered in the selection process. Among a number of MCDM approaches, the fuzzy set theory and best-worst method (BWM) are integrated as the fuzzy BWM in this study to structure the new product idea selection process under a group decision-making process. The hierarchy structure for the new product idea selection is also established to consider the perspectives of finance, marketing, engineering, manufacturing, and sustainability. Overall speaking, this study contributes to the field of NPD through overcoming the new product idea selection problem, while the group decision-making process is incorporated into the fuzzy BWM.

Kompetente Pflege und effektives Leadership sind wichtige Voraussetzungen für die Bereitstellung einer qualitativ hochwertigen, evidenzbasierten, patienten- und ergebnisorientierten Patientenversorgung. Die Abteilung Klinische Pflegewissenschaft (KPW) am Universitätsspital Basel (USB) entwickelte und implementierte Programme zur gezielten Praxisentwicklung, welche die pflegerische Kompetenz sowie die des Leadership fördern. Zur Erfassung von Pflege- und Leadership-Kompetenz sowie der Arbeitsumgebungs- und Pflegequalität führte die KPW 2007 eine Evaluationsstudie mit einem Mixed-Method-Design durch. Am quantitativen Anteil der Studie nahmen 679 Pflegefachpersonen und 27 Stationsleitungen teil. Die deskriptiven Resultate zeigen, dass Pflegefachpersonen ihre durchschnittliche pflegerische Kompetenz über alle sieben Subkategorien der Nurse Competence Scale mit einem Mittelwert von 75,1 (VAS 0 – 100) beurteilten. Die Leadership-Kompetenz von Stationsleitungen wurde im oberen Drittel der Skala des Leadership Practice Inventory mit mittleren Werten zwischen 40 bis 50 (Meanscore: 6 – 60) eingeschätzt. Als Qualitätssicherungsmaßnahme sind regelmäßige Nachfolgeerhebungen im Sinne eines Monitoring geplant. Solche Erhebungen werden in Zukunft von zentraler Bedeutung sein, da zu erwarten ist, dass sich mit der Einführung des DRG-Finanzierungsmodells im schweizerischen Gesundheitswesen der Kontext der pflegerischen Leistungen verändern wird.

This study used an explanatory sequential mixed-method design to explore the association between familial interdependence and familial mentoring relationship presence within black families. This study also examined how socioeconomic disadvantage may moderate the association between familial interdependence and familial mentoring presence. A sample of 216 black youth (59% girls; 41% boys) were surveyed, and a subsample of 25 participants were interviewed along with one of their parents, and one nonparental familial adult with whom the youth reported feeling emotionally close to learn more about the enactment of familial interdependence and the formation of familial mentoring relationships across social class. Logistic regression analyses revealed that greater valuing of familial interdependence was associated with a greater likelihood of having a familial mentoring relationship, but this association was present only among nonsocioeconomically disadvantaged youth. Data collected from participant interviews were analyzed to better understand this pattern of findings. These analyses provided some preliminary insights into why familial interdependence may predict familial mentor formation only among nonsocioeconomically disadvantaged youth. Implications of study findings for the promotion of familial mentoring relationships within black families are discussed.

AbstractStart-ups tend to form with a central idea that differentiates them from their competitors in the market. It is crucial for them to efficiently transform the idea into a marketable product. Prototyping helps to iteratively achieve a minimum viable product and plays a crucial role by enabling teams to test their ideas with limited resources early on. However, the prototyping process may have wrong focus leading to a suboptimal allocation of resources. Previously, we proposed role-based prototyping for fuzzy front-end development in small teams. It supports (1) resource allocation, (2) the definition of responsibilities, and (3) structuring the development process with milestones. In recent research this was a promising yet incomplete approach. We extend the previous work by refining the prototyping process by adding a prototyping matrix with two dimensions (purpose and lens), a prototyping cycle (plan, execute, test, reflect, assimilate), and a modified Kanban board (Protoban) for planning, managing, and reflecting cycles. This process, named PETRA was tested with a start-up developing an autonomous trash picking robot. The extended approach supported the team significantly in providing a clear idea of what to do at what time.

Early career academics are the key agents for the sustainable development of higher education institutions. In China, those who were educated overseas and have returned to Chinese universities to seek academic positions are becoming a fast-growing group. Good research performance is critical to survive in the increasingly competitive environment in academia. Improving research performance requires an understanding of the factors that facilitate or inhibit research performance. In the light of Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory, this study, using a mixed-method design (20 interviewees and 136 respondents), elaborates on a number of external factors affecting returned early career academics’ research performance. Understanding these factors is helpful for the building of a favorable environment that can improve the research performance of the returned early career academics, and hence the sustainable development of universities.

AbstractPrototyping is essential for fuzzy front-end product development. The prototyping process answers questions about critical assumptions and supports design decisions, but it is often unstructured and context-dependent. Previously, we showed how to guide novice designers in early development stages with prototyping milestones. Here, we studied the prototyping success perceived by novice design teams. This was done in two steps: (1) teams were asked to assign each prototype to a milestone, a specific purpose, a fidelity level, and a human-centered design lens, and then evaluate the success using a predefined set of criteria. (2) Teams were interviewed about the success of the prototyping process, this time using self-chosen criteria. Results related to (1) show that teams perceived prototyping activities with respect to desirability and problem validation significantly less successful than prototyping activities towards feasibility and solution validation. Results related to (2) show that teams mostly chose success criteria related to how well prototypes supported communication, decision making, learning, and tangibility. This insight may be used to give priorities to further improvement of methods and guidance in these areas.

Background: The concept of feedback is central to medical education. There is gradual shift from sandwich feedback to Pendleton feedback which is learner centred. Pragmatic worldview was proposed in this study. Certificate in Medical Teaching (CMT) programme was initiated at King Edward Medical University (KEMU) Lahore since 2019.The study objective was to improve learning outcome. Methods: Mixed Method research design was chosen, out of all mixed method procedures “Convergent parallel mixed method design” was followed collecting simultaneously quantitative and qualitative data, then results were analysed and compared separately. This study was carried out from 01-06-2020 to 31-03-2021 at King Edward Medical University Lahore. Sample size of 43 participants from CMT (Certificate in Medical Teaching) Batch 1 and 2 took part in this study. Doctors from clinical side, demonstrators and personnel of Allied health sciences attended this course. A predesigned proforma designed on google form was sent to each participant via e-mail.. Results: Quantitative data collected was interpreted as percentages and in form of tables and presented as pie charts. Qualitative data collected was analysed by segregating data into codes. Corresponding themes were made of each code and presented in tabular form. Conclusion: On the basis of feedback and mixed method approach, it can be concluded that certificate in medical teaching is a new teaching program at king Edward Medical University Lahore which can serve as basis to start master’s degree at this institution.
