There has been a growing concern about the performance measures based on traditional accounting information such as return on equity (ROE), return on capital employed (ROCE), return on net worth (RONW), earning per shares (EPS), net operating profit after taxes (NOPAT) and return on investment (ROI). These measures although widely used fail to capture the shareholders’ value creation/destruction as a result of management actions. The concept of economic value added (EVA) and market value added (MVA) have gained popularity all over the world particularly in the USA, the UK and European countries. EVA and MVA are finding acceptance as internal and external performance measures because these two measures are consistent with the organizational objective of shareholders’ value creation. Due to its popularity, a lot of research work has been conducted in the late 1990s covering diverse issues on EVA and MVA. In the light of the above, the present study made an attempt to calculate EVA as well as MVA and to analyze whether Apollo Tyres is creating or destroying shareholders’ wealth during the study period.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine the superiority of economic value added (EVA) over the traditional accounting performance measures, i.e. earnings per share, return on assets and return on equity. For this purpose, the relative and incremental information content of EVA and accounting measures are tested by examining the relationship of these measures with stock returns. Design/methodology/approach – The analysis is performed for a sample of 50 Indian companies selected from the index Nifty 50 for the period of 2008-2011. The penal regression models are applied to examine the relative and incremental information content of EVA and traditional performance measures. Findings – The study finds that EVA has more relevant and incremental information content than accounting measures for analyzing shareholder value creation. These results confirm that EVA is better performance measure than traditional accounting measures. Research limitations/implications – The study could be further extended for the sample of other firms covering the specific industries and sectors. The calculation of EVA could be modified with respect to the adjustment in profit after tax and the calculation of cost of capital. Practical implications – The study has implications for the managers who are responsible to generate the wealth of shareholders by formulating the corporate financial policies. The findings also help investors who are closely concerned with the financial health of the firm while taking their investment decisions. Originality/value – The novelty of this study is that it relates total return of firm’s stock with the financial measures unlike the previous literature.

The impact of Covid-19 placed Higher Education leadership in a state of crisis management, where decision making had to be swift and impactful. This research draws on ethea of mindfulness, actor training techniques, referencing high-reliability organisations (HRO). Interviews conducted by the author with three leaders of actor training conservatoires in Higher Education institutions in Australia, the UK and the USA reflect on crisis management actions taken in response to the impact of Covid-19 on their sector, from which high-frequency words are identified and grouped thematically. Reflecting on these high-frequency words and the thematic grouping, a model of mindful leadership is proposed as a positive tool that may enable those in leadership to recognise and respond efficiently to wider structural frailties within Higher Education, with reference to the capacity of leaders to operate with increased mindfulness, enabling a more resilient organisation that unlocks the locus of control.

Using quarterly bank-level data over the period 1997–2005, this paper examines the effect of foreign bank presence on commercial banks incorporated in Thailand, using traditional and value-based performance measures as indicators of the degree of competition and proxies for the efficiency in the provision of banking services. The findings suggest that foreign bank presence is not only beneficial in terms of traditional performance measures, but also in terms of economic profit. The results with respect to economic value added and cash value added, however, cast some doubt over the presumed benefits of opening up, underlining the importance of using a proxy that considers the cost of equity and departs from standard accounting principles. Furthermore, the results indicate that foreign entry through the acquisition of domestic banks appears to have a stronger and more beneficial impact on locally incorporated banks than through the establishment of branches, with majority ownership by a foreign blockholder being of importance.

Operating in an already challenging business environment, companies have faced yet another difficulty since March 2020, when the World Health Organization (WHO) declared a global pandemic situation related to the COVID-19 disease. The study's purpose was to analyze the value creation in Euronext Lisbon companies from the first semester of 2019 to the first semester of 2020. The aim was also to identify the areas with the most impact on value creation. To measure value creation, the indicator economic value added (EVA®) was used. The results revealed that the capacity to create value decreased for all companies. The variables included in the study that showed a statistically significant relationship with EVA® were operating profit, sales revenue, and cost of equity. This pandemic situation poses a significant threat to value creation, enhancing the idea that, more than ever, business management needs to focus on long-term value creation strategies.

This chapter is a descriptive and explicative case study about value creation at Siemens in an uncertain and in a certain environment. Siemens has implemented economic value-added-based management since 1998. The empirical data analysis highlights value creation at Siemens at the beginning of the innovation lifecycle, when the environment is uncertain, and at the end of the innovation lifecycle, when contracts are signed, and the environment becomes predictable. Innovation is first placed in open networks, in which start-ups are essential, to which venture capital is allocated using business models. This is the ideation stage of the product lifecycle, when competitive advantage, the essence of value creation in both theory and the Siemens example, is created. Innovation matures, and Siemens closes contracts with customers about existing customer offerings. These contracts are managed as projects and funded with equity and debt. This is the stage when sufficient data exists to plan economic value added, the focus of Siemens' corporate governance.

The publication by the American Psychiatric Association in 1980 of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Third Edition (DSM-III) - a text whose influence has been felt throughout the entire world and whose system of classification, particularly within the context of depressive disorders, has now been adopted by the majority of research work, no matter in what country it is implemented or published - has given the impression that an ‘American perspective’ has been substituted for the ‘European perspective’ that was predominant up to that point. However, this is a simplistic view of a complex history. Certainly, the basic methods of DSM-III originated from within those traditions which are particularly rooted in the USA, such as the quantitative approach to diagnostic criteria; these derive in the final analysis from the ‘statistical psychology’ devised by James McKeen Cattell at the University of Pennsylvania in 1887, and subsequently taught by him at Columbia University. But even among those factors which appear to be characteristically American, European origins can be detected: when he was in London, Cattell was the pupil of Galton, the founder of biometry. Furthermore, there has never existed in Europe any unanimity of opinion with regard to the problems of nosology: concepts supported in the German-speaking countries, in France, in the UK, or in the Scandinavian countries have only been partially adopted elsewhere and occasionally have remained specific to their national tradition. This paper will examine two of the fundamental points in the classification of depression which are linked to European perspectives - the notion of affective disorder and the endogenous/non-endogenous dichotomy - and will discuss the present situation created by the discordance which exists between the European and American approaches.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to identify the shareholder value creation measure best suited to express shareholder value creation for a particular industry. Design/methodology/approach The analysis was performed on 192 companies listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, classified into nine different samples or industries. Five shareholder value creation measures were examined, namely market value added (MVA), a market-adjusted stock return, the market-to-book ratio, Tobin’s Q ratio, and the return on capital employed divided by the cost of equity. Findings An analysis of the nine categories of firms led to the identification of different measures that are suited to express value creation. Stock returns did not provide an appropriate value measure. Instead, depending on the specific industry, Tobin’s Q ratio, MVA, and the market-to-book ratio should be used to measure and express value creation. Practical implications For management, the value drivers identified for each industry present a clear indication of industry-specific variables upon which they can focus in operating activities to most efficiently increase shareholder value. Originality/value Unlike previous studies that use only one or two different shareholder value creation measures as dependent variables, this study uses five different value creation measures. Another contribution of this study is the compilation of a unique set of value drivers that explain shareholder value creation separately for each of the nine different categories of firms.

Prudential regulation of banks and financial institutions, especially the stipulation of risk weighted capital adequacy ratio, has brought into sharp focus their inherent weaknesses. The real licence to expand banking is no more a nod from the regulator than the adequacy of capital backup. The situation is getting complex with deregulation and globalisation wherein the inherent risks especially the credit risk and market risk, need to be covered by proper capital adequacy ratio. Asset managers have to be always alert about the inherent risk and return embedded in any proposed asset accretion. Even before stabilising with an adequate CAR, banks are required to gear up with the proposed and more rigorous new capital adequacy framework of Basle Committee. Instead of confining to centralised approach, the banks can plan and monitor continuously asset expansion at zonal/regional and branch levels with a notional concept of capital adequacy. While pricing the assets, especially in a decentralised process of decision making in the form of both fund based and non-fund based exposures, cost of capital for any additional exposure needs to be taken care in the relevant computations. Ultimately the scope for healthy and sustainable growth of any bank depends upon its competitiveness to attract capital which in turn depends upon the economic value added, i.e., return on capital net of opportunity cost of such capital. Now that the government has almost stopped further infusion of capital into (public sector) banks, are the banks capital market fit?

Purpose The creation and distribution of human capital, often termed talent, has been recognised in economic geography as an important factor in the locational decisions of firms (Florida, 2002), and at a more general level as a key driver of economic growth (Romer, 1990). The purpose of this paper is to consider how talent is created and distributed across the cities of the UK and the key factors which are driving this spatial distribution. They also consider what the economic outcomes of these disparities are for cities. Design/methodology/approach The multivariate models can estimate the dynamic inter-relationships between human capital (talent), innovative capacity, and economic value added. These can be estimated, using talent as an example, in the form: human capital measurei =α0i+α1i innovative capacity +α2i quality of life + α3i labour market indicators + α4i economic indicators + α5i HEI indicators + β6i population demographics + β7i population + υi. Findings The first finding is that talent is unequally distributed across cities, with some having three times more highly educated workers than others. Talent concentration at the city level is associated with entrepreneurial activity, culture, the presence of a university, and to a lesser degree the housing market. This feeds into more knowledge-based industry, which is associated with higher gross value added. Research limitations/implications The research is limited in a practical sense by the fact that UK data at this level have only become available quite recently. Thus, it is only possible to capture talent flows and city growth in a relatively small window. But the prospects going forward will allow more detailed analysis at the city level of the relationship between talent flows and local economic growth. And additional insights could be considered relating to the on-going changes in the UK university system. Practical implications The question of whether universities are simply producers of talent or play a much broader and deeper role in the socio-economic landscape and outcomes of cities is an open one. This research has identified what the key drivers of city level economic growth and knowledge creation are, and sought to explain why some cities are capable of attracting and harnessing three times more talent than other cities. This has significant implications for the future development of UK cities and for those seeking to address these imbalances. Social implications Universities are a major economic agent in their own right, but they are increasingly being asked to play a wider role in local economic development. The authors’ evidence suggests that universities do play a wider role in the growth and development of cities, but that there are large discrepancies in the subsequent spatial distribution of the talent they create. And this has significant implications for those seeking to address these imbalances and promote a broader and less unequal economic landscape. Originality/value The authors explore how cities create economic value via a process whereby talent is attracted and then this stimulates knowledge-based industry activity. The originality relates to several key aspects of the work. First, the authors look at the stock of talent, and then the authors explore how “new” talent from universities is attracted by looking at graduate flows around the cities of the UK, differentiating between top-level graduates and less talented graduates. The authors then allow a wide variety of economic, cultural, and population factors to influence the locational decision of talented people. The results highlight the complexity of this decision.

Strategic management has produced an amazing number of theories and models in the last decades. However, so far it has not succeeded in producing a good integrative model that can synthesize all the existing models. In a previous paper I proposed such a model (from now on we will refer to it as the GEMK model, in relation to Growth-EVA-Market Power-Knowledge). It is based on the two drivers of stock value creation, Economic Value Added (EVA) and growth of capital, and proposes two new testable variables, market power and knowledge. This paper is the application of the GEMK model. It shows how most of existing strategic management models impact stock value creation. It produces a valuable simplification of the discipline, eliminates confrontations, shows that several different theories are complementary, provides a new powerful critical thinking, and shows that the different theories are contingent to these four variables. Most importantly, it shows that the different theories have different levels of impact on stock value creation.
