Present study is an attempt to measure technology readiness of Indian customers towards self checkout service (SCS) through mobile app at retail stores at Hyderabad, India. Self-checkout services (SCS), a key offering of self service technology (SST), ‘is the technological enablement of customers to make payments and complete a checkout, after shopping, with little or no interaction with a service employee.’ Researchers also studied correlations between technology readiness, perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, and likelihood to use SCS. For the purpose of the study TRI 2.0 developed by Parasuraman and Colby (2015) was used along with items of perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use, adapted from Davis (1989) , and items of ‘likelihood to use’ adapted from Bitner, Ostrom and Meuter (2002) . The findings of the study reveal that respondents’ technology readiness was moderate with respect to mobile based SCS. Significant positive correlations were found between: technology readiness and perceived ease of use, perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use and likelihood to use, perceived usefulness and likelihood to use. Further the respondents were categorised in to five technology segments as sceptics, explorers, pioneers, avoiders and hesitators.

PurposeThis paper proposes a model that extends the technology acceptance model (TAM) by identifying factors that influence consumers' acceptance of augmented reality (AR) self-service technologies (AR-based SSTs) in the retail sector, resulting in the Augmented Reality in Retail Model (ARiR Model).Design/methodology/approachThis study is based on an online questionnaire responded to by 284 makeup-using women from Nicaragua and the USA. It is based on an AR mobile app used to shop in retail stores. Partial least squares-structural equation modelling was used to validate the ARiR model and test the hypotheses.FindingsAesthetics and navigation are significant predictors of perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use (PEOU), and self-efficacy also explains perceived ease of use. Technology readiness and the need for personal interaction were not found to be influencing factors. A cross-cultural comparison indicated that both countries have similar overall attitudes towards AR-based SSTs.Research limitations/implicationsThis paper provides insights into the perceived value of, and motives for customer acceptance of, AR-based SSTs, which can serve as guidelines for their future implementation. Furthermore, it validates and confirms the application of the proposed ARiR model for technology acceptance in both developed and developing countries.Practical implicationsThe paper provides new insights for retailers on the implementation of AR at the point of sale.Originality/valueThe model extends the original TAM to AR and introduces five new constructs: need for personal interaction, aesthetics, navigation, self-efficacy and technology readiness. It was tested in both a developing and a developed country.

Constant developments of technology and increases in labor costs are the two major reasons for the creation and continuous evolvement of technology-based self services. Consumers' technology readiness should be taken into account in predicting the perception and behavior of potential consumers towards Self Service Technologies. An empirical study of consumers' readiness to use technology based self-services was undertaken in Greece. A survey instrument was developed to investigate the relationship between technology readiness, attitude, perceived ease of use, usefulness and consumers readiness towards adoption of Self Service Technologies. The results showed that population's technology readiness, the attitude of potential consumers towards and perceived usefulness of Self Service Technologies, are the factors that mostly affect their final success, since they define the level of readiness towards these services on behalf of potential consumers.

Although numerous studies have been conducted on the use of self-service technology (SST), little is known about the importance of the situation for individuals’ acceptance of SSTs. This study proposed the situational dependency construct and analyzed the role of the construct in the use of SSTs. To conduct an empirical analysis, a research model combining the situational dependency variable with the perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use of the technology acceptance model variables, which are the most frequently used in studies related to SSTs, was developed. A total of 213 valid data were collected through questionnaires and analyzed using confirmatory factor analysis and path analysis through structural equation modeling. The results showed that situational dependence influenced attitude toward using along with perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness and that situational dependence had a strong influence on intention to use. This study provides strategic insight for practitioners to lead acceptance of SSTs.

This study examined the factors that influence consumers’ acceptance and use of self-service technology by integrating a ground theory model such as the technology acceptance model and the theory of innovation adoption. The variables that affect consumers’ attitudes and intentions were investigated; this included perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, relative advantage, complexity and knowledge. Further, the variables from the resistance theory, which consist of usage barriers and ability, were investigated. Interviews and surveys were conducted with two business operators that provide TVM services; eight hundred online and offline consumers who experienced the TVMs were selected as a sample. The research model of this study was developed, and the correlations between the variables analyzed, using structural equation modeling. Our results confirm that the factors such as relative advantage, knowledge, perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use positively affected the attitude and intention toward using the TVM; factors such as usage barriers and complexity negatively impacted the intention to use the top-up machine. These results can be used as baseline data for developing or designing self-service technology. Entrepreneurs should consider these factors to make technology continue to be recognized and persisted in the use of technology.

Orientation: While mobile applications are seen as the way forward for airlines and airports alike, not much is known about consumers’ readiness to adopt such self-service technologies. This is important because of lower than expected adoption rates of traditional self-service technologies (online websites and check-in kiosks) in the airline industry.Research purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine passengers’ level of technology readiness and its influence on their adoption of mobile self-service technologies in the airline industry of South Africa.Motivation for the study: To ensure the adoption of mobile self-service technologies in the airline industry, it is necessary to uncover consumers’ readiness and adoption behaviours towards such technologies.Research design, approach and method: Primary data were collected from 315 respondents using a structured questionnaire. The sample comprised South African citizens who had travelled using an airline either domestically or internationally within the previous 12 months. Regression analysis was used to test hypotheses posited in the study.Main findings: The findings showed that airline self-service mobile application adoption is influenced by technology readiness, perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness; both perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness are influenced by technology readiness; and perceived ease of use strongly influences perceived usefulness regarding airline mobile self-service application adoption.Practical/managerial implications: Effective communication aimed at enhancing the perception that airline self-service mobile applications are easy to use is essential to increase the adoption of mobile applications in the airline industry.Contribution/value-add: The article contributed by applying the TRAM construct to the use and adoption of self-service mobile applications in the airline industry. In addition, the study also integrated the recently refined TRI 2.0 into the TRAM construct (TRAM 2.0).

The accelerated advancement in technology resulted to the appearance of Self Service Technology. One form of self-service technology in the banking sector is the presence of mobile banking. This study aims to examine the influence of five factors toward the reusing of Mobile Bank Central Asia (BCA) in Bandung. Those factors used in this study were the extension of Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) constructs, i.e perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, perceived credibility, customer awareness and social influence. Data was collected through distributed questionnaire to 100 respondents who used Mobile BCA by using judgment sampling. Multiple linear regression technique was employed to investigate the influence among variables. This study empirically concluded that consumer intention to reuse BCA mobile services was positively influenced by social influence, customer awareness and perceived ease of use. On the other hand, perceived usefulness and perceived credibility did not influence the intention of reusing Mobile BCA in Bandung. Further study is suggested to use probability sampling technique to cover the real voice of mobile banking user in Bandung and to explore the lack influence of perceived usefulness and perceived credibility toward reusing of Mobile BCA.

Purpose This paper aims to offer and examine a conceptual model of tourist innovativeness toward self-service technologies (SSTs) to confirm whether tourists prefer service delivery by SSTs over employees in an offline hospitality environment. Design/methodology/approach Tourists’ perceived usefulness (PU) of SSTs and need for interaction (NI) with service employees have been taken as crucial mediating variables to examine the effects of perceived ease of use and technology readiness index personality dimensions toward SST and employee-based service adoption. Findings Findings reveal that both “NI” and “PU” play significant roles in Technology Readiness and Acceptance Model (TRAM) when tourists select one of two service delivery options – SSTs and service employees. Research limitations/implications The foremost limitation of the study is its dependence on domestic tourist samples. However, such samples were chosen because tourists comprising these samples tend to use similar service delivery options more, in turn increasing their use of SSTs available in sample hotels. Practical implications The study gives a deeper understanding of TRAM with an extremely crucial mediating variable (NI) in an offline service context. It also provides useful insights to service providers and policy makers for developing new strategies and policies to enhance user experience. Social implications This study recommends the usage of numerous SSTs by tourists. Originality/value During extensive literature review carried out in this research, no study was found that proposed such an effective framework in an offline service context.

BACKGROUND The concept of MyData emerged as a paradigm shift in personal data management and the process of seeking to transform the current organization-centered system. MyData enables the utilization of one’s own personal information that is scattered among various institutions as a system for data subjects to exercise rights of self-determination. OBJECTIVE We aimed to develop and demonstrate a MyData platform (MyHealthData) that allows data subjects to download and manage health-related personal data stored in various medical institutions. METHODS The platform consists of a mobile app for users, API (application program interface) for data conversion and exchange installed in the hospital information system (HIS), and a relay server connected to the blockchain to prove data integrity. User surveys were conducted to explore perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, and satisfaction. RESULTS We provided four services to users through the platform developed in this study: inquiring about medical and health checkup records, health coaching, checking conditions of participation in clinical research, and claims, by using an app. A total of 1,228 participants signed for the service and the overall user satisfaction was high, especially with ‘inquire about medical and health checkup records.’ CONCLUSIONS MyData brings a user-centered paradigm in which data subjects can directly participate in the use of their own data. MyData will improve healthcare data interoperability, allowing it to be used not only in research areas but also in other areas by sharing and integrating various healthcare data.

The advent of smartphones revolutionized and took the market to a new level. Now a days, majority of internet users spend their maximum time on smartphones, specifically on mobile apps. The emergence of numerous apps in smartphones with games features has brought about a different trend, mobile app gamification. The emerging popularity of smartphone technologies and their mobile apps have led various companies to engage their consumers with mobile apps, specifically through gamification. Therefore, companies gain consumers attention integrate their mobile marketing into their overall marketing strategy. This study explores the domain of consumer engagement and their intentions through the gamification of mobile apps. The research focuses on how mobile app gamification drives consumer engagement and their intentions drawing upon SDT and TAM. Using survey method data collected from 270 respondents, data analysis was done with structure equation modeling (SEM). The findings assert that various features of gamification of mobile apps (perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness and enjoyment) have a significant influence on consumer engagement. However, convenience was unexpectedly found not to be significantly associated with consumer engagement. Additionally, consumer engagement was found to be associated to smartphone user's intentions to use gamification of mobile apps. The results of present study have theoretical and practical implications.

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to examine individuals' decisions to use health and fitness apps by applying the extended technology readiness and acceptance model (TRAM), which combines technology readiness (TR), the technology acceptance model (TAM) and perceived enjoyment (PEN). Moreover, this study explores the differences between users and non-users regarding their intentions to use health and fitness apps.Design/methodology/approachData collection (n = 206) was conducted using convenience sampling from four large universities in South Korea. The data were analysed by partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) using SmartPLS 3.0.FindingsThe results revealed that positive TR positively affects perceived ease of use (PEOU), perceived usefulness (PU) and PEN, while negative TR had a negative impact only on PEN. Furthermore, the significant relationships between PEOU, PU and PEN were identified. In addition, multigroup analyses indicated that the relationships between positive TR and PEN, between PEN and PEOU, between PEOU and PU, and between PU and behavioural intention were positively stronger for app users.Originality/valueThis study initially applied the TRAM to understand individuals' behavioural intentions to use health and fitness apps. Moreover, this study identified the distinct roles of positive and negative TR affecting individuals' cognition regarding using health and fitness apps. The differences in the psychological processes between app users and non-users offer insights and implications for practitioners.
