Poverty Simulations With Health Professional Students: Evidence of Impact

Poverty is one of the most significant determinants of health inequity in the United States, yet students of the health professions are more likely to come from higher rather than from lower income families, separating them economically from many of the individuals they will serve. Poverty simulations can expose health professional students to experiences of those living in poverty and provide a more holistic, structural perspective of poverty that informs their later practice. We sought to understand the current state of poverty simulations being utilized throughout the United States. Through a review of abstracts via Ovid and Google Scholar, we identified nine articles that focus directly on describing poverty simulations in university-based programs with health or social work university students and that incorporate some form of pre- and postevaluation methods. After a careful review of these articles, we describe the distinct differences in components and contexts between the simulations, including Bridging the Gaps–Pittsburgh’s Experiential Poverty Exercise, and how effects on students is determined across the various simulations. Additionally, we review how unique aspects of the Bridging the Gaps–Pittsburgh’s Experiential Poverty Exercise can serve as a model for providing multidisciplinary graduate students the opportunity to increase their knowledge and shift attitudes about people experiencing poverty before working with them as health professionals. In presenting the current status of these simulations, we seek to develop recommendations regarding the components and context of poverty simulations as well as approaches to assessing effects.

Poverty simulations are used increasingly in academic settings to expose health professional students to experiences of those living in poverty; therefore, the impact, content, and context of these simulations should be examined. Bridging the Gaps-Pittsburgh uses a full-day poverty simulation (Experiential Poverty [EP] Exercise) to expose health professional students to structural realities and experiences of those living in poverty in the United States as part of an intensive, interdisciplinary, community-partnered summer internship program. Students engage in the EP Exercise in one of 8 weekly didactic and reflective sessions throughout the 8-week, full-time internship. To measure the impact of the EP Exercise on student learning, Bridging the Gaps-Pittsburgh developed a measure (Poverty Attitude, Awareness, and Understanding Survey [PAAUS]), including seven questions to explore student awareness of aspects of poverty and two questions regarding attitudes about poverty students carry into their future practice. Using five cohorts of PAAUS data over 5 years, we analyzed the changes in attitudes and understanding about poverty among health professional students pre- and postparticipation in this program. For one recent cohort, we conducted an additional posttest to assess the impact of the poverty simulation as distinct from other programmatic experiences. Finally, we share qualitative feedback from student evaluations following the EP Exercise. We provide evidence of the statistically significant impact of the EP Exercise on students’ awareness, attitudes, and understanding of poverty and indicate the importance of considering the context of poverty simulations to improve health professional student preparation to work with populations experiencing poverty.

For nearly 75 years, the United States military has partnered with human factors researchers and practitioners to improve its effectiveness by designing better systems and contributing to a better understanding of human-system performance. Aviation, for example, has been one of several domains to reap numerous benefits from this partnership. Still, there is an enormous amount of research requiring human factors expertise in the years to come. This panel will discuss the current state and benefits of military human factors research and identify areas of future collaboration.

This book presents quantitative and qualitative data from the first-ever national study of international Catholic sisters in the United States, the Trinity Washington University/CARA Study. International sisters are defined as those born outside the United States and currently ministering, studying, or in residence in this country. The book begins with a chapter that locates current international sisters in the long line of sisters who have come to this country since the eighteenth century. The book identifies the sisters of today, describes the pathways they used to come here, their levels of satisfaction, their concerns and contributions, the issue of immigration status, the challenges of sister students, and the role and mission of Catholic organizations assisting immigrants in general, and international sisters in particular. The book ends with implications of the research and recommendations regarding resources, ministries, and structures of support for international sisters.

In recent years, a continuous decline of ice-coverage in the Arctic has been recorded, but these high latitudes are still dominated by earth’s polar ice cap. Therefore, safe and sustainable shipping operations in this still frozen region have as a precondition the availability of ice-breaking support. The analysis in hand provides an assessment of the United States’ and Canada’s polar ice-breaking program with the purpose of examining to what extent these countries’ relevant resources are able to meet the facilitated growth of industrial interests in the High North. This assessment will specifically focus on the maritime transportation sector along the Northwest Passage and consists of four main sections. The first provides a very brief description of the main Arctic passages. The second section specifically explores the current situation of the Northwest Passage, including the relevant navigational challenges, lack of infrastructure, available routes that may be used for transit, potential choke points, and current state of vessel activity along these routes. The third one examines the economic viability of the Northwest Passage compared to that of the Panama Canal; the fourth and final section is investigating the current and future capabilities of the United States’ and Canada’s ice-breaking fleet. Unfortunately, both countries were found to be lacking the necessary assets with ice-breaking capabilities and will need to accelerate their efforts in order to effectively respond to the growing needs of the Arctic. The total number of available ice-breaking assets is impacting negatively the level of support by the marine transportation system of both the United States and Canada; these two countries are facing the possibility to be unable to effectively meet the expected future needs because of the lengthy acquisition and production process required for new ice-breaking fleets.

AbstractThe early part of the twenty-first century saw a revolution in the field of Homeland Security. The 9/11 attacks, shortly followed thereafter by the Anthrax Attacks, served as a wakeup call to the United States and showed the inadequacy of the current state of the nation’s Homeland Security operations. Biodefense, and as a direct result Biosurveillance, changed dramatically after these tragedies, planting the seeds of fear in the minds of Americans. They were shown that not only could the United States be attacked at any time, but the weapon could be an invisible disease-causing agent.
