The study from home policy was implemented to reduce crowds as an effort to suppress the spread of Covid-19. All levels of education were asked to learn from home, guided and facilitated by educators and educational institutions. Ideally, the learning process should run smoothly even though learning activities are carried out online. However, the shift in learning modes from face-to-face to online has created many learning problems. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of the implemention of online learning models in Indonesia. This was a descriptive study and a quantitative approach was used. Data were collected online using a questionnaire. Data were analyzed interactively through three components of analysis, namely data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions or verification. Based on the results, it was found that the implementation of online learning was effective. 100% of the lecturers implemented online learning using LMS, of which 86.67% were skilled at using the LMS platform in carrying out online learning. The lecturers used various strategies to organize learning, including integrating cognitive materials in core activities to improve student preparation, involvement and independence in online learning activities. In addition, 50% of the lecturers have conducted student satisfaction surveys on online learning. Keywords: effectiveness, learning model, online learning

Background Extensive reading (ER) classes have become a popular way to promote reading in EFL (English as a Foreign Language) classrooms because ER supports the idea of reading for pleasure. However, reading in the classroom can still become stale if students have little chance to reflect on what they have read or if they become burdened by the reading requirements. Aim In an attempt to create a more energetic ER classroom, we converted the classroom into a game-based environment with the aim of promoting L2 reading enjoyment and motivating students to read in a more focused manner . Method As for specifics, 55 female Japanese university students—divided into two groups based upon English proficiency—participated in a social book reading game called Bibliobattle whereby students discussed their favorite books in small groups. Three iterations of the game were incorporated into the ER classroom as a way to enliven reading activities. Results The game proved largely successful. From the data obtained in the debriefing questionnaires, students mentioned that they were motivated by the activities through reflection on their book’s content and through the sharing of specific details about what they had read with their peers. Although both groups of students indicated their motivation to play the game, this was especially true for the lower level readers—a group that had demonstrated more apathy towards ER in the past. Based upon our experiences while running the game, we recommend that Bibliobattles be implemented as specialized events in the ER classroom as a means to help stimulate a love for reading in a second language; however, it should also be noted that student preparation for such battles is time-consuming, so the number of battles per semester should be limited to a maximum of two per semester.

This article represents my 2020 Bronislaw Malinowski Award Address that I delivered virtually at the 2021 Society for Applied Anthropology Annual Meetings, March 23–27, 2021. The address focuses on the value of organizations as both a field of study and a place of employment for anthropologists. On the one hand, organizations have been largely excluded from anthropological field research in favor of research in communities. On the other, academic anthropology departments (applied anthropology programs excepted) have been largely reluctant to engage with anthropological practice and scholarship in the classroom or view organizations as a vital source of careers for their graduating students. I use my own career trajectory as a model to raise awareness of what anthropology might learn from organizations as well as what anthropologists might offer them. I will close with an initiative for a cross-section of the discipline to work together on the Career Readiness Commission to address the lack of student preparation and professionalization for careers in and for organizations.

Literary studies, in its two sides: teaching literature and studying literature, have suffered from a split in the profession between literary pedagogy and literary theories. A survey of the experience of some famous scholars who have tackled this issue in their writings is conducted to pinpoint the neglect in the part of people specialized in literary studies of the practical side of their work. Two points of convergence between literary pedagogy and literary theory are discussed. The first one presented two cases in which literary pedagogy was highly influenced by the ideas of two major shifts in critical theory: the formalist tendency of New Criticism and the reader-oriented tendency of the reader response approach. The second one discussed the efforts of the American educationalist and theorist Louise Rosenblatt in providing a theory of reading literary works in the light of what takes place in literature classrooms. The conclusions derived from this discussion lead to recommendations concerning the importance of making teaching of literature one of the academic interests and student preparation in departments of literature.

Assessment is an important element of educational process. It evaluates the level of student preparation as well as influences its quality. The article focuses on methods of learning outcomes’ assessment. It is based on the results of the future geologists` curricula and syllabus analysis, observation of educational process, and the survey conducted among future geologists. The study shows the imperfection of the current summative assessment of future geologists and reveals the main reasons for competencies assessment` inefficiency. The list of the most common task types that are usually being used by educators for the learning outcomes assessment of future geologists is composed; and frequency rate of their use and the students’ attitude towards them is identified. Some explanations about students` bias toward the most popular (among educators) assessment methods are provided. The article proposes an assessment procedure suitable for vocational training of future geologists, starting from the assessment methods selection and up to educator`s feedback. The above assessment procedure could be useful not only for students of geology, but other fields as well. Considering the levels of information assimilation, the scale of conformity of assessment methods (tests, assignments) to the information assimilation levels has been developed and the list of tasks allowing to assess learning outcomes of geology students properly formulated. The concept of combining modern and more traditional assessment methods has been proposed.
