Multi-hazard parametric catastrophe bond trigger design for subduction earthquakes and tsunamis

This study presents trigger design methods and performance evaluations of multi-hazard parametric catastrophe bonds for mega-thrust subduction earthquakes and tsunamis. The catastrophe bonds serve as alternative disaster risk financing tools for insurers and reinsurers as well as municipalities and governments. Two types of parametric catastrophe bond trigger are investigated. A scenario-based method utilizes available earthquake source-based information, such as magnitude and location, whereas a station-intensity-based method can be implemented when seismic and tsunami hazard monitoring systems are in place in a region. The case study results, focusing on wooden buildings in Miyagi Prefecture, indicate that the station-intensity-based trigger methods outperform the scenario-based trigger methods significantly. Incorporating seismic and tsunami hazard information from multiple recording stations results in smaller trigger errors. The station-intensity-based methods are applicable to building portfolios at both municipality levels and regional levels.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to analyze the characteristics and performance of the meat supply chain by focusing on developing a model for measuring the meat supply chain's performance in the province of Isfahan, Iran.Design/methodology/approachUsing a combination of literature review, Delphi approach and case study research, the paper examines part of the meat supply chain that consists of three industrial slaughterhouses, two cold rooms, three factories and more than 20 supermarkets and it then presents a framework to assess the performance of the industry in the region.FindingsThe methodology suggests indices for strategic and tactical levels in a meat industry as a case study. The proposed framework for the performance measurement of the chain was applied in strategic and tactical levels in which the ranking of indices are also among the achievements of this study. Results show that there are six main criteria required to measure the meat industry's performance.Originality/valueLiterature shows no record of an integrated measurement system for the entire food supply chain where indicators are combined into a performance function to assess the overall performance of the industry.

Construction supply chain management (cSCM) requires planning such that construction stages and logistics are coordinated and integrated to reduce costs, improve productivity, and generate a win–win situation for different parties. The supply chain operations reference (SCOR), which has been widely applied in other industries, is a standardized operational modeling methodology for analyzing supply chain processes. This study considers construction industry characteristics in applying the SCOR model to develop a dynamic cSCM model using computer simulation. Furthermore, this study developed a novel cSCM performance evaluation method using the SCOR method to evaluate cSCM performance and identify and solve cSCM problems. This study uses a bridge construction project as a case study, which determines the relationships among supply chain participants to enhance communication efficiency and identify problems related to materials management. The case study results demonstrate that the proposed hybrid modeling methodology helps construction supply chain participants identify their roles and communicate easily, helps project managers identify bottlenecks in a supply chain, and significantly improves cSCM performance.

Terminal capacity and performance have become a major concern for rail transit agencies in China due to the ever increasing passenger demand. This paper develops a mixed integer programming (MIP) optimization model to estimate the turnback capacity and performance of a rail transit terminal with two-tail tracks. The capacity evaluation and delay propagation are described and assessed as anN-track integrated model with minimal time span and train delay. Operations and design parameters such as tail track allocation strategies, maximum layover time, headway pattern, buffer time distribution scheme, and primary delay are also considered in this model. The effectiveness of the model is tested by a case study with computation results drawn from one terminal station in Shanghai, China. The case study results show that unfixed platform time and flexible tail track allocation strategies can improve the capacity of turnback operation, and the strategy of allowing swapping of the tail tracks has a significantly positive impact on delay absorption.

For realizing energy conservation and burdening optimization of sintering process in iron and steel enterprises, as to the predictive issues of energy consumption and performance indices, the Support Vector Machine for Regression (ε-SVR) was introduced into sintering production system. A general modeling mode was proposed and the predictive model of energy consumption and several performances like chemical compositions was established by history data of sintering. Then, this model was compared with several other methods such as multiple linear regressions, ELM, BPNN and RBFN in a case study. Results show that the ε-SVR method can achieve qualified prediction results rapidly with the best accuracy and time efficiency.

The growth of the event sector is underpinned by the demand of organizing a business event.  Thus, it leads to an increase in economic and social impact. However, the problems from the growth of this sector potentially results from the use of several event materials, transportation and infrastructure development.  Organizing a green event is seen as one of the strategies to reduce the environmental impact.  Therefore, the aim of this paper is to explore the issues involved throughout the process of greening an event by applying Mair and Jago Model.  Semi-structured interviews were conducted with event managers from six Malaysia business event companies that encourage green practices during their event.  Findings suggest that impact, initiative, support and performance motivates event organizers in organizing a green event.  It has also been found that knowledge, resources and behaviour are the barriers faced by event organizers throughout the process of organizing a green event.  Based on the findings it appears that two important factors have emerged from the data collection and analysis that showed a deviation from the Mair and Jago Model, namely “impact” for the motivation element and “support” for the barrier element.  The main limitation of this study was the scope of the study; as it only focuses on business events.  However, as the main purpose of this study is to explore the issues of organizing a green event, it has been found that there are other issues need to be explored in other contexts and geographical area.  Apart from this, as this is a case study, it can only replicate according to the circumstances of this case study. However, this study can be generalized in terms of the theory that has emerged from it.  It is suggested that further research should explore more issues in other contexts and geographical areas.
