Abstract Background Since the outbreak of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) in December 2019, community non-medical anti-epidemic workers have played an important role in the prevention of COVID-19 in China. The present study aimed to assess sleep quality and its associated factors among community non-medical anti-epidemic workers. Method A survey was conducted using anonymous online questionnaire to collect information from 16 March 2020 to 24 March 2020. A total of 474 participants were included, with a 94.23% completion rate. The questionnaire contained demographic data, physical symptoms, and contact history with COVID-19. The researchers assessed perceived social support by the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS), assessed perceived stress by the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), and measured sleep quality by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire. Results Among the participants, 46.20% reported poor sleep quality. A binary logistic regression revealed that having educational background of junior college or above, being a member of the police force, having contacted individuals with confirmed or suspected COVID-19 infection, having chronic disease(s), having illness within 2 weeks, and having high or moderate perceived stress were significant factors associated with an increased risk of poor sleep quality. Conclusion Demographic factors, physical symptoms, history of contact with COVID-19, and perceived stress are significantly associated with poor sleep quality of community non-medical anti-epidemic workers. Thus, targeting these factors might be helpful in enhancing sleep quality of community workers.

Sleep quality among heroin-dependent patients receiving methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) is not fully investigated in Vietnam. This study explored the prevalence of poor sleep quality in methadone-maintained patients and associated factors. This cross-sectional included 395 MMT patients at three clinics in Nam Dinh province, Vietnam. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was employed to measure patients’ sleep quality. Sociodemographic, clinical, behavioral, psychological, and social support characteristics were collected. Multivariate Logistic and Generalized Linear Regression models were applied to identify associated factors. Among 395 patients, 26.6% had poor sleep quality according to the PSQI scale. People having jobs were less likely to have poor sleep quality and lower PSQI scores compared to unemployed patients. Those having spouses had lower PSQI scores than single patients. High depression, anxiety, and stress scores were associated with poor sleep quality and high PSQI scores. A longer duration of MMT increased the likelihood of experiencing poor sleep quality. Patients smoking tobacco daily or concurrently using drugs had lower PSQI scores than those that did not. This study highlights a moderate prevalence of poor sleep quality among Vietnamese MMT patients. Regular evaluation, appropriate psychological management, and social support, as well as the provision of employment opportunities, potentially improve the sleep quality of methadone-maintained patients.

Despite the influence of sleep disturbance on treatment adherence, quality of life, work productivity, risk of chronic illness, it remains under-recognized and under-studied in Ethiopia. Therefore it is necessary to produce scientific evidence to fill the knowledge gap and areas of management. The current study aimed to assess sleep quality and its associated factors among people living with HIV/AIDS. Methods: An institution-based cross-sectional study was utilized among 408 participants who were selected by a systematic random sampling technique at Zewditu memorial hospital from April to May 2018. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index questionnaire was used to measure sleep quality. Ethical clearance was obtained from the joint ethics committee of the University of Gondar and Amanuel Mental Specialized Hospital. Oral informed consent was obtained from each participant. Binary and multivariable logistic regression models were fitted. Odds ratios (OR) with the corresponding 95% confidence interval (95%CI) was computed. Results: The magnitude of poor sleep quality was 55.6%. Being female [AOR=3.40, 95% CI: (1.80, 6.41)], depression [AOR =3.52, 95% CI: (1.95, 6.32)], CD4count ≤ 200 cells/mm3 [AOR=3.18,95%CI: (1.65,6.13)], duration of HIV/AIDS diagnosis [AOR=3.43,95% CI: (1.61,7.29)], current use of tobacco [AOR=5.69, 95% CI: (2.04,15.9)] and chat or caffeinated drinks [AOR=2.65, 95% CI: (1.06,6.64)] and poor sleep hygiene [AOR=3.55, 95% CI: (1.85, 6.78)] were significantly associated with poor sleep quality.Conclusions: More than half of the study participants were found to have poor sleep quality. A range factors influence quality of sleep of people with HIV/AIDS. Routine screening of sleep condition among people living with HIV/AIDS and early intervention based on the findings is suggested.

Abstract Background Lately, attention for the role of sleep in health and wellbeing has increased. Short sleep duration and poor quality of sleep are associated with a higher chance at several (mental) health issues, including a higher mortality risk. Furthermore it is associated with attention problems and lower academic achievement. Poor sleep has a high prevalence, especially among students. We aim to provide (policy) recommendations from studying the associated factors on an individual and social level with poor sleep and its consequences. Methods In a cross-sectional survey design (N = 493), the extent of sleep problems and its associated factors was studied amongst a group of Dutch students. The Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was used. Linear regression analysis was performed. Participants were recruited through social media and e-mail (Male 43%; Female 57%; mean age, 22 years). Additionally, experts were questioned in a small survey to come up with solutions (N = 24). Results 59% of higher educational students suffer from poor sleep quality. Factors that were significantly associated with worse sleep quality were: sleep need, behavior and psychology (effects stress overload), having a paid job in the evening/night, loneliness, having the Chinese and other ethnicity and having a sleep-related disorder. Sleep was significantly associated with worse mental health, vitality and drug use. Additionally, sleep was a significant predictor for attention problems and worse academic performance in the current academic year. Conclusions Nearly 2 out of 3 students suffered from poor sleep quality, reconfirming the high prevalence amongst higher educational students in other studies. Universities can contribute to better sleep quality of their students by educating their students more about sleep hygiene (including effects of drugs and how to deal with high work pressures), and make them more aware of the availability of student psychologists and student general practitioners. Key messages Students in higher education are a population at high risk for poor sleep quality. More attention for the importance of sleep for health, wellbeing and academic achievements should be implemented in the university institutional context.

Background: Sleep is one of the basic needs of human beings and is important to their health; sleeping problem has a wide range of causes, including medical and psychological. However, evidence on the burden of sleep problems in low-income countries is lacking. When compared to the general population, the risks of having poor sleep quality are substantially higher in prisoners. However, the prevalence of poor sleep quality among prisoners at national level is not known. Objective: To assess the prevalence and associated factors of poor quality of sleep among prisoners in Mettu town prison, 2019. Methods: A cross-sectional study design was employed with 310 prisoners selected by a systematic random sampling method. Data was collected by a face to face interview using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Data analysis was done using SPSS version 20. Results: The study revealed that 77.1% (n= 239) of participants had poor sleep quality. Marital status: single (AOR=0.11, 95%CI=0.05, 0.26), widowed and divorced (AOR=0.11, 95%CI=0.03, 0.37), history of previous incarceration (AOR=4.8, 95%CI=2.0, 11.79), urban residence (AOR=2.65, 95%CI=1.12, 6.27), unable to read and write and read (AOR=6.10, 95%CI=1.43, 25.9) and lifetime alcohol use (AOR=8.45, 95%CI=3.88, 18.36) had significant association with poor sleep quality. Conclusion: This study has shown that the prevalence of poor sleep quality among prisoners was very high. Marital status: single, widowed and divorced, history of previous incarceration, urban residence, cannot write and read and lifetime alcohol use found to have an impact on the prevalence of poor sleep quality.

AbstractWith recent technological advancement, a major shift in the lifestyle of individuals has been observed. This change is more evident in youth in terms of sleep pattern changes and socialization. It is therefore important to assess the quality of life in this productive group of society. The protocol consisted of the Urdu version of the demographic questionnaires, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), the Cohen-Hoberman Inventory of Physical symptoms (CHIPS) and the World Health Organization Quality of Life (WHOQOL-BREF). A total of 150 young adults (boys = 62, girls = 88) were included through convenience sampling. A significant positive association was found between poor sleep quality and health complaints (r = 0.53**). However, a significant negative association was found between poor sleep and quality of life in terms of physical health, psychological health, social relationships and the environment (r = −0.57**, −0.35**, −0.39**, −0.33**), respectively, which indicates the importance of sleep in determining quality of life. Furthermore, the majority of the participants (57%) reported good sleep quality and low health complaints [M = 15.08, standard deviation (SD) = 13.29] whereas 43% of participants reported poor sleep quality, more health complaints (M = 32.94, SD = 22.59) and poor quality of life. It shows that most of the participants are healthy and able to manage their daily routine, work commitment and provide services for country’s development.

Background Globally, epilepsy is the commonest neurological disorder in adults. It has significant health and economic consequences to the affected individuals and the family. There is ample evidence that epileptic patients are at increased risk of poor sleep quality than the general population. However, there is limited evidence on sleep quality among epileptic patients and associated factors in Ethiopia. Therefore, this study investigated the prevalence of poor sleep quality and associated factors among adult patients with epilepsy. Method Institutional based cross-sectional study was conducted among adult epileptic patients attending follow-up care at referral hospitals in the Amhara region. A total of 575 epileptic patients were recruited using a stratified systematic random sampling technique. An interviewer-administered semi-structured questionnaire and record review were used for data collection. To assess sleep quality the pretested Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) tool was used. A binary logistic regression model was used to assess factors associated with poor sleep quality. Variables with a p-value less than 0.2 in the bivariable binary logistic regression analysis were considered for the multivariable binary logistic regression analysis. In the multivariable binary logistic regression analysis, the Adjusted Odds Ratio (AOR) with the 95% Confidence Interval (CI) were reported to declare the statistical significance and strength of association. Model fitness was assessed using the Hosmer-Lemeshow test and was adequate (p>0.05). Multicollinearity of the independent variables was assessed using the Variance Inflation Factor (VIF) and the mean VIF was less than 10. Results A total of 565 participants were enrolled in the study with a response rate of 98.3%. The prevalence of poor sleep quality among adult epileptic patients was 68.8% [95% CI: 64.8%, 72.5%]. In the multivariable binary logistic regression, being unable to read and write [AOR = 3.16, 95%CI: 1.53, 6.51], taking polytherapy treatment [AOR = 2.10, 95% CI: 1.37, 3.21], poor medication adherence [AOR = 2.53, 95%CI: 1.02, 6.23] and having poor support [AOR = 2.72, 95%CI: 1.53, 4.82] and moderate social support [AOR = 1.89, 95%CI: 1.05, 3.41] were significantly associated with higher odds of poor sleep quality. Conclusion and recommendation Poor sleep quality is a major public health concern in Ethiopia. The patient’s level of education, number of medication use, medication adherence, and social support were found significant predictors of poor sleep quality. These findings highlight improving medication adherence and social support are effective strategies to improve the sleep quality of epileptic patients. Besides, it is better to give special emphasis to those epileptic patients with a low level of education and taking polytherapy to enhance sleep quality.

AbstractObjectivesThis study has been designed to elucidate the prevalence of stress, depression and poor sleep among medical students in a Pakistani medical school. There is a paucity of data on social support among medical students in Pakistan; an important predictor of depressive symptoms. Therefore, this study was also aimed to demonstrate the direct and indirect impact of social support in alleviating depressive symptoms in the study sample.MethodsThis observational cross-sectional study was conducted in Lahore, Pakistan, where a total of 400 students at a medical school were approached between 1st January to 31st March 2018 to participate in the study. The study sample comprised of medical and dental students enrolled at a privately financed Pakistani medical and dental school. The participants responded to a self-administered survey comprising of five parts: a) demographics, b) Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), c) Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), d) Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) and e) Perceived Stress Scale-4 (PSS-4). All data were analysed using SPSS v. 20. Linear regression analysis was used to reveal the predictors of depression.ResultsIn total, 353 medical students participated, yielding a response rate of 88.25%. Overall, poor sleep quality was experienced by 205 (58.1%) students. Mild to severe depression was reported by 83% of the respondents: mild depression by 104 (29.5%), moderate depression by 104 (29.5%), moderately severe depression by 54 (15.3%) and severe depression by 31 (8.8%) respondents. Subjective sleep quality, sleep latency, daytime dysfunction and stress levels were significantly associated with depression symptoms. Social support was not significantly associated with depressive symptoms in the regression model (Beta = -0.08, P < 0.09); however, it acted as a significant mediator, reducing the strength of the relationship between depressive symptoms and sleep quality and stress.ConclusionsAccording to our study, a large proportion of healthcare (medical and dental) students were found to be suffering from mild to moderate depression and experienced poor sleep quality. It is concluded that social support is an important variable in predicting depressive symptomatology by ameliorating the effects of poor sleep quality and high stress levels.
