Abstract Background In the current study, the approach of ‘utopia as method’ was combined with the concept ‘landscapes of care’ to explore collective imaginaries of caring landscapes in relation to young people living in rural northern Sweden, while focusing specifically on what such landscapes should ideally look like, and how various strategies could help to realise the visions. Methods The research was conducted using a modified concept mapping methodology comprising three phases of data collection and analysis. This facilitated the integration of tacit knowledge and utopian visions of young people, professionals and policymakers living and working in various parts of northern Sweden. Results The results indicated that caring landscapes should: ‘provide services responsive to young people’s wishes and needs’, ‘be organised around values of safety, equity and youth participation’, and ‘rework metro-centredness’ in order to care for, with and about rural youth. Conclusions The findings can be viewed as an imaginary reconstitution of communities in rural northern Sweden, but also as hypothetical building blocks to be used for developing caring landscapes and a ‘good countryside’ where young people have the possibility to live a good life in decent health.

Abstract Background Situated in the northern Swedish context, the project presented in this protocol aims to explore and establish how multi-component ‘(re)engagement’ initiatives work, while providing directions for strengthening the delivery and implementation to better meet the needs of young people in vulnerable ‘NEET’ situations (‘not in employment, education or training’). In this regard, the research emerges from international and national concerns about the challenges faced by young people who are marginalised from mainstream institutions. It is also a response to the ‘(re)engagement’ initiatives that have been implemented, but never rigorously evaluated, in Sweden, which means a substantial body of relevant knowledge is at risk of being lost, and that we currently lack evidence about what works to reengage young people that are neither studying nor working. Methods To address the aim and three subsequent research questions, two methodologies will be combined in three phases. Following an iterative analytical process, where results from a realist evaluation will inform a concept mapping study, the project will involve: 1) a realist review of international academic and grey literature to identify underlying programme theories and explore how ‘(re)engagement’ initiatives are expected to work; 2) a realism-based case study to scrutinise the programme theories and assess whether the ‘(re)engagement’ initiatives work as intended; and 3) a participatory concept mapping study to provide directions for strengthening the delivery and implementation of ‘(re)engagement’ initiatives in northern Sweden. Discussion While ‘(re)engagement’ initiatives may not be a solution to the problems that exist in labour markets and educational systems today, they may be a partial and perhaps provisional saviour for young people who have already ended up at the margins of society. By evaluating how these initiatives work while providing directions for action, the current project will contribute knowledge useful to improve the support to young people in vulnerable ‘NEET’ situations who need the courage to dare enter a world that has let them down once before.

Two Stages

The study focuses on the socio-psychological analysis of images of typical specimen of high status and low status person identified using qualitative and quantitative methods of data collection and analysis. On the basis of the two stages of the study, using miscellaneous research methods, (n=120) the main relevant characteristics were identified: objective sources of social status, behavioral peculiarities, personality qualities, appearance peculiarities, nonverbal behavior and experiences of such people. These characteristics may reflect important for young people areas of life and their perception of the society model.

This article focuses on young people who, despite the general tendency towards youth outmigration in rural areas, have decided to stay in their home town. We explore the agency of young, conscious stayers, as well as the process of staying in the northern Finnish town of Kemijärvi. The stayers’ values and perceptions of the constituents of a good life could be taken as an alternative to the prevailing Western ideal that emphasizes mobility and ambitious educational and career plans, and is, in part, driving young people to leave their rural hometowns. The stayers in this study are active participants in their own fate and are content with their choice of staying. Applying ethnographic methods, we undertake to learn what rural stayers consider the building blocks of a good life in a small-town setting, one offering comparatively limited options in terms of jobs, education and leisure activities.

 Resumo: Nos dias atuais, percebemos que muitas são as dificuldades para a organização da juventude e a participação política nos espaços de poder e decisão existentes na sociedade. Em muitos dos espaços políticos os jovens não se sentem representados, nem tem oportunidades de defender seus interesses. Nesse contexto, percebe-se a ausência de formação política e oportunidades de participação do jovem na sociedade. Nessa perspectiva, esta pesquisa está pautada no levantamento de elementos da participação social, cultura política dos jovens e da trajetória de organização da Rede de Juventudes do Seridó que contribuem para a formação da consciência crítica dos jovens e favorecem o exercício do controle social e da promoção de políticas públicas voltadas para a juventude.  Palavras-chave: Juventude; Participação Social; Rede de Juventudes.  Abstract: Nowadays, we realize that there are many difficulties for the organization of youth and political participation in the spaces of power and decision in society. In many political spaces young people do not feel represented, nor do they have opportunities to defend their interests. In this context, one can perceive the lack of political formation and opportunities for youth participation in society.
