Abstract Background The Portuguese Physical Literacy Assessment (PPLA) is a novel tool to assess high-school students’ (grade 10–12; 15–18 years) Physical Literacy (PL) in Physical Education (PE); inspired by the four domains of the Australian Physical Literacy Framework (APLF), and the Portuguese PE syllabus. This paper describes the development, content validation, and pilot testing of the PPLA-Questionnaire (PPLA-Q), one of two instruments in the PPLA, comprised of modules to assess the psychological, social, and part of the cognitive domain of PL. Methods Development was supported by previous work, analysis of the APLF, and literature review. We iteratively gathered evidence on content validity through two rounds of qualitative and quantitative expert validation (n = 11); three rounds of cognitive interviews with high-school students (n = 12); and multiple instances of expert advisor input. A pilot study in two grade 10 classes (n = 41) assessed feasibility, preliminary reliability, item difficulty and discrimination. Results Initial versions of the PPLA-Q gathered evidence in favor of adequate content validity at item level: most items had an Item-Content Validity Index ≥.78 and Cohen’s κ ≥ .76. At module-level, S-CVI/Ave and UA were .87/.60, .98/.93 and .96/.84 for the cognitive, psychological, and social modules, respectively. Through the pilot study, we found evidence for feasibility, preliminary subscale and item reliability, difficulty, and discrimination. Items were reviewed through qualitative methods until saturation. Current PPLA-Q consists of 3 modules: cognitive (knowledge test with 10 items), psychological (46 Likert-type items) and social (43 Likert-type items). Conclusion Results of this study provide evidence for content validity, feasibility within PE setting and preliminary reliability of the PPLA-Q as an instrument to assess the psychological, social, and part of the cognitive domain of PL in grade 10 to 12 adolescents. Further validation and development are needed to establish construct validity and reliability, and study PPLA-Q’s integration with the PPLA-Observation (an instrument in development to assess the remaining domains of PL) within the PPLA framework.

In this article, we describe the design and implementation of an e-internship program that BioScience Project offers high school students over the summer. Project topics are in the areas of behavioral neuroscience and brain disorders. All research, teaching, and communication is done online using open access databases and webtools, a learning management system, and Google apps. Students conduct all aspects of a research project from formulating a question to collecting and analyzing the data, to presenting their results in the form of a scientific poster. Results from a pilot study involving fifteen students indicate that students are capable of successfully completing such a project, and benefit both intellectually and professionally from participating in the e-internship program.

Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menghasilkan soal matematika model TIMSS yang valid dan praktis untuk siswa SMP berdasarkan Kurikulum 2013. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah penelitian pengembangan. Proses pendesainan soal sebagai instrumen penilaian dilakukan dengan prototyping. Prototyping meliputi dua tahap. Prototipe I merupakan hasil desain dan penyusunan soal-soal oleh peneliti sendiri, sedang prototipe II revisi dari prototipe I berdasarkan masukan dari pakar, teman sejawat, dan guru matematika, yang berupa catatan validator dan notulensi diskusi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa buku soal yang disusun dengan pengelompokan bab mengikuti ranah materi seperti dalam TIMSS, yakni bilangan, geometri, aljabar, data dan peluang. Buku soal untuk siswa tidak perlu ada tulisan mengenai ranah materi, topik pokok, dan ranah kognitif. Masukan untuk perbaikan dari FGD adalah soal sebaiknya diawali dari yang mudah, sedang, baru yang sulit. Penulisan soal pilihan ganda lebih baik tidak menggunakan kalimat tanya, melainkan dengan membuat pernyataan yang memuat titik-titik, baik di tengah atau di akhir kalimat. Soal sebaiknya tidak memuat pernyataan implikasi. Kata kunci: Pengembangan soal, matematika SMP, TIMSS, Kurikulum 2013DEVELOPING THE TIMSS MATH PROBLEM MODEL TO SUPPORT THE MATHEMATICS LEARNING IN GRADE VII USING THE 2013 CURRICULUM Abstract: This study was aimed to produce a valid and practical TIMMS math problem model for junior high school students using the 2013 curriculum. The study used the research and development design. The design process of the problems as assessment instruments was carried out through prototyping involving two stages. Prototype I was the design product and the problem development done by the researchers themselves, while Prototype II was the revision of Prototype I based on the feedback provided by experts, colleagues, and Mathematics teachers in the form of validators’ notes and the minutes taken from discussions. The findings showed that the book of math problems was written by grouping the chapters following the materials domains as those in TIMSS, that is, numbers, geometry, algebra, data, and probability. For the student book, it was not nsecessary to write the materials domain, the essential topics, and the cognitive domain. The feedback from the FGD was that the problems should be arranged from the easiest ones to the most difficult ones. The multiple choice items should not be written in the form of questions, but in the form of incomplete sentences with the blanks in the middle or the end of the sentences. A 12-item Depression Locus of Control Scale was given to 117 white high school students. The scale has three subscales, internal (4 items), chance (4 items), and powerful others (4 items). Reliability assessed by test-retest was .55 and Cronbach alphas were for the subscales listed above .63, .73, and .66, respectively. Content validity, criterion-related validity, construct validity, and discriminant validity were examined. Reading level was at the eighth grade. It is recommended that the more specific Depression Locus of Control Scale be used in studies of depression.
