Time-domain transient electromagnetic method (TEM) measurements sometimes exhibit a sign reversal in the secondary field during the off-time, which is usually attributed to the induced-polarization (IP) effect. In contrast with the conventional IP method, which uses a current source, TEM with an ungrounded transmitting loop operates using a pure voltage source, which is induced by the primary field switching on and off. We performed TEM measurements in a resistive survey area showing an IP effect, and we used a low-temperature superconducting quantum interference device (LT-SQUID) with sensitivity of [Formula: see text] as a magnetic field sensor. A sign reversal in all of our measurements was observed; furthermore, the negative amplitude reached [Formula: see text]. In-depth analysis with an extended version of a wire-filament circuit reveals that the large negative signal may be due to discharging of in-ground capacitance, an IP effect. The conduction response of the ground can be restored by subtracting the fitted discharging response (negative valued) from the observed data. To verify this operation, we compared TEM measurements with and without wire-loop targets, which can induce a conduction field with a known decay time constant during the off-time. The extracted conduction responses of the wire-loop targets match the expected ones well. This research reveals that the primary field switch-off must always be included when interpreting TEM data with sign reversal and an LT-SQUID may be a good alternative sensor for studying the IP effect in TEM.

The water-enriched mined-out area, which led to frequent accidents and the serious destruction of ecological environment and serious threat to coal-mining practices. To ensure safe mining practices and to avoid the intrusion of water from the bases of coal deposits, the detection of the mined-out areas, especially the water-filled mined-out area in advanced, is one of the most important issues. This research focuses on detecting mined-out area enriched by water with the large-loop transient electromagnetic method. Data acquisition system was arranged along 23 survey lines, and the total of 1975 survey points were recorded. An inversion technique was used to interpret the TEM data. The inversion results suggested that the mined-out areas enriched by water always exhibit a very low-resistivity, the resistivity contour present closed circle sharp. There are three main water enriched mined-out areas, named JS1, JS2, and JS3 in the north part of the survey area, as well as three main water weak-enriched areas named RJS1, RJS2 and RJS3 in the west and southwest part of the survey area can be inferred by TEM, the interpretation results were verified by drilling. Large loop TEM is proved as an efficient way to investigate water enriched mined-out areas under the rugged topography conditions, and this work provides more detailed geological information to the coal mining enterprise for further coal-mining practices safety arrangement.

A coal mine in Datong is an integrated mine. At present, there is goaf in the upper and lower part of the mining coal seam. There is a lot of ponding in the goaf, which has great potential safety hazards for production. In order to find out the scope and location of ponding in goaf, the comprehensive geophysical exploration method combining transient electromagnetic method and high-density resistivity method is used to carry out the research. Firstly, the time-base, turn-off time, receiving delay, current, superposition times, and other parameters of the instrument are tested on the surface of known goaf to obtain the best instrument parameters, and the parameters are used to verify the feasibility of the research scheme; then, the transient electromagnetic method is used for large-area exploration on the surface of the mine, the suspected goaf ponding area is found through comprehensive analysis, and the high-density resistivity exploration is arranged in the suspected goaf ponding area. According to the obtained results, the scope and location of the goaf ponding area are accurately located through comprehensive analysis. The results show that there are two goaf ponding areas in the exploration area, which are located above the 8# coal seam currently mined; the range and location of goaf ponding area can be accurately obtained by using the comprehensive geophysical method of high-density electrical method and transient electromagnetic method. This method can provide reference for mine water prevention and control in Datong area and has great practical significance to ensure coal mine safety production.

Near-source electromagnetic technology has been developed and applied in the exploration of petroleum, metallic ore, coal, and engineering geology due to its high efficiency, high detection accuracy, and deep depth of investigation. In this paper, research and applications of the frequency-domain electromagnetic sounding method (FDEM), wide-field electromagnetic method (WFEM), modified central-loop transient electromagnetic method (TEM), and short-offset grounded-wire TEM (SOTEM) with obvious near-source characteristics, were reviewed and analyzed. From the 1960s to 1990s, the FDEM method and equipment were extensively developed in China. These methods have played important roles in the exploration of coal resources. Based on controlled source audio-frequency magnetotelluric (CSAMT) and FDEM methods, a new method has been developed by deriving a new expression to calculate apparent resistivity. This method, which is referred to as WFEM, has been studied, applied, and received great attention in China. To increase work efficiency and reduce the influence of local transverse anisotropy on the detection processes, a modified central-loop TEM detection technology based on the central loop transient electromagnetic method was developed in China. The advantages of SOTEM in near-source surveys with high resolution and increased depth detection stimulated academic research interest to further develop grounded-wire TEM techniques.
