Nitrates are one of the most common groundwater contaminants and they come from different sources. The paper presents a study of groundwater quality at Varaždin wellfield in the north part of Croatia. The nitrate concentration at this location has been above the maximum allowed concentration for several decades, which has made the opening of new wellfields costly. Based on the previously developed groundwater flow model, a model that covers the narrow area of the wellfield is developed. The influential zone of the observed wellfield in working conditions is determined. Based on the developed model, the sources of nitrate pollution are located, which can be generally divided into non-point and point sources. Considering the time of groundwater retention in the horizontal flow, it is concluded that the water protection zones are marked following the applicable ordinance. Based on the developed groundwater flow model at the observed wellfield, a simulation of nitrate pollution propagation by advection and dispersion processes is performed. The simulation results point out the location of the poultry landfill as the largest source of nitrate pollution. However, poultry farms, which are located in the influence area of the wellfield, also contribute significantly to the nitrate concentration at the wellfield.

The present study provides information about the evolution of the Sperchios River deltaic area over the last 6500 years. Coastal changes, due to natural phenomena and anthropogenic activities, were analyzed utilizing a variety of geospatial data such as historic records, topographic maps, aerial photos, and satellite images, covering a period from 4500 BC to 2020. A qualitative approach for the period, from 4500 BC to 1852, and a quantitative analysis, from 1852 to the present day, were employed. Considering their scale and overall quality, the data were processed and georeferenced in detail based on the very high-resolution orthophoto datasets of the area. Then, the multitemporal shorelines were delineated in a geographical information system platform. Two different methods were utilized for the estimation of the shoreline changes and trends, namely the coastal change area method and the cross-section analysis, by implementing the digital shoreline analysis system with two statistical approaches, the end point rate and the linear regression rate. Significant river flow and coastline changes were observed with the overall increase in the delta area throughout the study period reaching 135 km2 (mean annual growth of 0.02 km2/yr) and the higher accretion rates to be detected during the periods 1805–1852, 1908–1945 and 1960–1986, especially at the central and north part of the gulf. During the last three decades, the coastline has remained relatively stable with a decreasing tendency, which, along with the expected sea-level rise due to climate change, can infer significant threats for the coastal zone in the near future.

Regional inequality in western China has been rarely examined and has risen as an important issue in the Chinese academic circle. This study, taking Xinjiang as a case, investigated regional inequality in Xinjiang since the 1990s. The results show that the interregional inequality became more prominent, while the overall regional disparities among counties and cities have experienced an inverted U-shape path and have been mainly caused by the inequality of the intra-north part of the province. Counties with high economic development levels were mainly located in northern Xinjiang and had a high probability of further moving economic levels. We further found that the regional development pattern in Xinjiang was significantly associated with spatial accessibility, followed by population density and urbanization factors. This paper deepens our understanding of the complex pattern and mechanism of regional inequality in western China, and local specific policies, therefore, are needed to solve the problem.

AbstractSandstone oil reserves are composed of a variety of clay minerals, including kaolinite, illite, and chlorite. These clay minerals have a significant effect of reservoir quality. The upper sandstone member (USS) of Zubair Formation is the most plentiful reservoir of the field and it’s part of a large anticline that belongs to an enormous clastic sandstone formation, from the Lower Cretaceous period. A spectral gamma-ray (SGR) log was used to identify the type of clay minerals, depositional environment, and the relationship between total organic matter with uranium concentration. SGR log indicated that USS is composed mainly of chlorite, smectite, and illite clay minerals with the presence of kaolinite as a dominant clay mineral component. Th/U ratio varies between 2.55 and 8.52 and 1.11 to 11.68 in the north and south parts of the field, respectively. The USS had a fluvially dominated, sand-rich deltaic environment based on the Th/U ratio. Furthermore, Th/K cross-plot was found that the south part was more affected by illite compared with the north part, although the presence of kaolinite.

Abstract Microplastics (MPs), generally found in all environment matrices, have become a hot issue in the word. In this study, a typical shallow lake (Baiyangdian) in Northern China was selected, MPs (0.45 μm-5 mm) in different depth of the water and sediment samples were determined. The abundance of MPs in water samples was 1000-20000 items /m3 (9595 items /m3 in average) and 400-2200 items /kg (1023 items /kg in average) in sediment samples. Since the pollution abatement measures implemented, MPs visible to eyes are generally eliminated, the detected MPs in this study are mainly μm sizes with no more than 3-5 items being mm size for each collected sample. The main forms of MPs are fibrous and fragmented with components mainly being polyamide (PA), polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP). MPs in the water at the garbage transfer station can be ranked as surface water < middle water < bottom water and the sediment contained obviously higher MP fragments indicating the history transferring of garbage can be a main cause of plastic deposition in this place. The content of fibrous MPs in surface water was high, and the fragments were found increasing with the depth of water. The southern area contained less MPs compared with the middle and north part of Baiyangdian lake due to the less human activities. The main sources of MPs in this area are the earlier residents' activities, the running of local plastic factories and the effluent from sewage treatment plant.

Tamilnadu is one of the economically developed states in India, which has 32 districts, taluks in hundreds and villages in thousands. But lots of studies on Tamilnadu’s regional development have found a wide disparity in economic development across the state. The North part of Tamilnadu is a comparatively backward region in general and the districts like Dharmapuri, Villupuram, Tiruvannamalai and Thiruvallur in particular. As a result, it is of special importance and essential to review the rural local bodies finances with reference to backward district in general and Thiruvellur district in particular in the wake of 73rd constitutional amendment.

Abstract The north-south seismic zone (NSSZ) is a destructive zone of large-scale earthquakes in China, and the earthquake mechanism associated with deep structures remains unclear. Previous studies have indicated that lithospheric delamination or absence of lithospheres in the western part of the NSSZ may facilitate the eastern extrusion of the Tibetan Plateau and lead to stress accumulation and release. However, the deep process of lithospheric delamination needs to be further clarified. In this study, I collect abundant high-quality teleseismic data recorded by permanent seismic stations and perform common conversion point (CCP) stacking of receiver functions in the north part of the NSSZ. The results show that lithospheric delamination might result in the splitting 660 km discontinuity and a thickening region of the mantle transition zone (MTZ).

Abstract The need for adequate rainfall data in all regions of Indonesia cannot be achieved only by relying on ground observation tools. This work aims to evaluate the application of spatial satellite rainfall data in characterizing rainfall associated with climatic condition over Indonesia. This study applied an Integrated Multi-satellite Retrievals for GPM (IMERG) data using a double correlation method (DCM). The analysis was carried out in the period April 2014 to March 2019. Before regionalization, IMERG V06 data were validated using observed rainfall data from the Agency for Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics of the Republic of Indonesia (BMKG). The results showed that 96% of 154 total validation locations have a high correlation score between IMERG and rain gauges (r = 0.5 – 0.97). IMERG was also able to identify monthly and annual rainfall patterns in Indonesia. Based on DCM, we obtained four rainfall regions in Indonesia. Region A has the monsoonal characteristic, covers central and south Indonesia from south Sumatra to Nusa Tenggara, south parts of Kalimantan, some areas of Sulawesi, and parts of Papua. Region B has an equatorial pattern (semi-monsoonal), located in the equatorial area of Indonesia and covers the west and east part of Sumatra and the north-central part of Kalimantan. Region C, with an anti-monsoonal pattern, covers Maluku, western-central Papua, and parts of Sulawesi. Region D is influenced by monsoon and cold surge characteristics, located in the north part of Sumatera and a small portion of northern Kalimantan to the South China Sea region. Besides the new region D, this research also showed five other differences between IMERG-based map and gridded rain gauges’ data-based map (2003). The regionalization results based on IMERG reveal that there is a possibility of updating areas with certain rainfall characters in Indonesia related to resolution, density, and updates data sources.

This article presents the results of a study of Late Mesozoic intrusive formations of the Omulevka terrane of the Verkhoyansk–Kolyma orogenic region. The research area covers the Selennyakh block of the Omulevka terrane and the territory adjacent to the south. The compositions of rock-forming, accessory and restitic minerals and geochemical features of intrusive rocks are considered. The methods of optical microscopy, microprobe, silicate and spectral analyses were used. There are the following several stages in the evolution of magmatism: (1) the Late Jurassic supra-subduction (gabbro, dolerites), (2) the beginning of the Early Cretaceous-transitional from supra-subduction to marginal-continental (gabbro-diorites, diorites, granodiorites), (3) the Early Cretaceous of active continental margin (granodiorites, granites), (4) the Late Cretaceous postorogenic or continental-riftogenic (alkali-feldspar granites of A-type), (5) the Late Cretaceous continental riftogenic (subalkaline gabbroids and basaltoids). In the process of evolution from stage one to stage four, there was an increase in the silicic acid content, total alkalinity and ferruginousity of rocks with the movement of magmogeneration levels to higher and higher horizons of the lithosphere (calculated pressure from 1.6–1.4 GPa to 0.6–0.9 GPa). At the same time, the preservation of high temperatures of magmogeneration (1000–1150 °C) and crystallization implies the supply of additional heat from an external (deep) source during the formation of granitoid melts. The magmatic activity is completed by the intrusion of subalkaline derivatives of a deep hearth, formed by metasomatized lherzolites. All the studied igneous rocks are either direct mantle fusions, or bear signs of the participation of mantle matter in the generation of parent melts in crustal substrates: the presence of tschermakite in gabbroids, nonequilibrium structures, the composition of early generations of biotites corresponding to biotites of mantle and crust-mantle derivatives, the presence of pyroxenes and accessory minerals characteristic of mantle magmas in granitoids. In the diagram Al-Na-K-2Ca–Fe + Ti + Mg, the composition points of the studied intrusive rocks tend to the mixing trend. In general, the research results suggest that the evolution of the Late Mesozoic intrusive magmatism of the studied territory and the specific matter of rock compositions were caused by the crust-mantle interaction as a result of the rise of mantle diapirs in the crust from a long-existing deep hearth of the main melt.

The article demonstrates a method for quantitative-qualitative geodiversity assessment based on core elements of abiotic nature (geology and geomorphology) according to a proposed weight multiplied by the area of spread through the studied region. The territory of the Coromandel Peninsula was selected as a case study due to its diverse geology and geomorphology. The north part of the Peninsula (Port Jackson, Fletcher Bay and Port Charles districts) was chosen because of the variety of rock types (sedimentary and volcanic groups) covering the region, while historical stratovolcano remnants and old sediments provide a good variety of meadow hills and weathered coastal cliffs. Meanwhile, the method utilizes easily accessible data (topographical and geological map) to assess slope angle (morphometry) and rock groups, including their age (geology) to identify areas in the sample region with significant geodiversity values. Moreover, the aim of this research is to make the assessment of geodiversity simpler and more accessible for various parts of the world with minimal required information. In this paper, we provide access to improve and utilize this method in geologically diverse territories to select the best areas for geotourism, geoeducation and geconservation planning.
