Online pediatric oncology education: A novel teaching tool for oncology residents

9048 Background: Deficiencies in pediatric oncology training for residents have been identified internationally. A lack of training in pediatric oncology during residency is correlated with impaired outcomes for pediatric patients. There is a clear need for novel teaching tools to supplement training in pediatric oncology. Purpose: The goal of this project was to develop a series of multimedia web-based learning modules for the interactive instruction and review of pediatric oncology. A needs-based assessment of pediatric oncology training in Canadian radiation oncology residency programs was used to guide web-site development. Methods: A needs-based analysis was conducted via a web-based survey sent to all Canadian radiation oncology program directors and residents. The survey was designed to identify the limitations of current training curriculum in pediatric oncology. A multidisciplinary team, including pathologists, radiologists, medical physicists, radiation and medical oncologists, developed the web site curriculum. The site was designed using teaching modules to focus on pediatric tumour sites. Modules were developed using a common format, divided into chapters detailing specific tumour types. Each chapter reviewed relevant epidemiology, anatomy, pathology, radiology, and treatment for the tumor type. A self-assessment tool was included at the end of the modules. User satisfaction surveys were used for feedback. Results: 100% (10/10) of Canadian radiation oncology program directors and 66% (69/106) of Canadian residents responded to the survey. 56% (59/106) of resident respondents felt that teaching in pediatric radiation oncology was inadequate and 56% (20/36) of senior residents felt unprepared for questions in pediatric oncology on qualifying board exams. 90% (105/116) of respondents felt that a web-based teaching tool would be useful. The first module, pediatric neuro-oncology, has been completed. Results indicate users find this module useful for supplementing traditional training. Conclusions: There are no other interactive teaching tools in pediatric oncology. This unique web-based educational program will allow self-directed study in the area of pediatric oncology, providing more effective learning of this challenging yet essential area of study. Abstract. Standard practice of setting up Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) involves use of a single land use (LU) layer under the assumption that no change takes place in LU condition irrespective of the length of simulation period. This assumption leads to erroneous conclusions about efficacy of management practices in those watersheds where land use changes (LUCs) (e.g. agriculture to urban, forest to agriculture etc.) occur during the simulation period. To overcome this limitation, we have developed a user-friendly, web-based tool named LUU Checker that helps create a composite LU layer by integrating multiple years of LU layers available in watersheds of interest. The results show that the use of composite LU layer for hydrologic response unit (HRU) delineation in 2474-km2 L’Anguile River Watershed in Arkansas was able to capture changed LU at subbasin level by using LU data available in the year 1999 and 2006, respectively. The web-based tool is applicable for large size watersheds and is accessible to multiple users from anywhere in the world. Keywords: Land use, Web-based tool, SWAT, LUU Checker.

The authors discuss issues relating to the feasibility of a Web-based database for facilitating communications between university researchers and industry. They have constructed an experimental Web-based Technology Bank that provides examples of university research which might be of interest to manufacturing companies. They are using this database as a focus of discussion on the usefulness of electronic communications for technology dissemination. The portfolio of research products, and the Web site on which it is housed, are currently being presented in a series of workshops for senior executives in small and medium sized manufacturing companies. Views are also being gathered from technology intermediaries. Analysis of the data so far has highlighted potential problems in disseminating information on the Internet and has also enabled the authors to identify and understand users' profiles.

Introduction: Implementation of teledermatology in primary care offers the possibility of treating patients using specific dermatologic knowledge in far away places with infrequent availability to these services. It is a priority to implement teledermatology services which demonstrate diagnostic reliability and satisfaction among users. Objectives and methods: To measure the diagnostic reliability of an asynchronous teledermatology web based application by means of intraobserver and interobserver concordance during teleconsultation and traditional presential («face to face») consultation. Furthermore, to evaluate user satisfaction regarding the teleconsultation and the web application.Results: A sample of 82 patients with 172 dermatologic diagnoses was obtained, in which an intraobserver concordance between 80.8% and 86.6%, and an interobserver concordance between 77.3% and 79.6% were found. Satisfaction was evaluated to be on an average of 92.5%.Conclusions: The teleconsultation reliability in teledermatology is evidenced to be high, and is susceptible of improvement through the implementation of health information standards and digital dermatologic photography protocols.

E-government is an effort to utilize information and communication technology especially internet to improve public service quality which generally implemented in a web based application. Usability is one of the important quality criteria for the success of a web. In this study we developed a framework for evaluation of usability in e-government consisting of  eight stages: (1) determining the evaluation objectives, (2) determining the usability aspects, (3) determining the metrics usability, (4) selecting usability evaluation method candidates, (5) determining the required criteria of the method to be evaluated, (6) evaluating the method, (7) selecting and making the instrument, and (8) evaluate usability.. The results of the application of this framework in the case study of e-finance resulted in two methods used: user testing and questionnaires. The evaluation of usability in e-government for e-finance case studies using the proposed framework results in usability level of e-finance in terms of effectiveness, efficiency, and user satisfaction are 96%, 92%, and 70 respectively. Which can be identified to be grouped into 16 problems consisting of aspects of effectiveness and efficiency.

Voice-based web e-Education is a technology-supported learning paradigm that allows phone-access of learners to e-Learning web-based applications. These applications are designed mainly for the visually impaired. They are however lacking in attributes of adaptive and reusable learning objects, which are emerging requirements for applications in these domain. This paper presents a framework for developing intelligent voice-based applications in the context of e-Education. The framework presented supports intelligent components such as adaptation and recommendation services. A prototype Intelligent Voice-based E-Education System (iVEES) was developed and subjected to test by visually impaired users. A usability study was carried out using the International Standard Organization’s (ISO) 9241-11 specification to determine the level of effectiveness, efficiency and user satisfaction. Report of our findings shows that the application is of immense benefit, based on the system’s inherent capacity for taking autonomous decision that are capable of adapting to users’ requests.
